SUMMARY:
Drive school bus over assigned route abiding by all rules and regulations set forth by the federal and state governments and by the District.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Safely operate school buses and other large vehicles. Carry out evacuation procedures when necessary.
Maintain control of passenger conduct and ensure safety of passengers while enroute.
Provide care and assistance to passengers when entering and leaving the bus and during transportation.
Inspect and ensure that all equipment, instruments, safety devices, and vehicles meet requirements and are operating properly before and after driving duties. Maintain adequate levels of fuel, engine oil, and coolant.
Distribute bus incident referrals to designated schools or locations.
Load and unload passengers in wheelchairs using the lifts. Secure wheelchair with tie downs, and properly fasten all protective safety devices, while maintaining a professional team-working relationship with the Bus Paraprofessional.
Prepare and submit necessary records in a timely manner and maintain accurate route folder.
Inspect and insure the interior and exterior cleanliness of assigned buses.
Drive weekends, at night, or during special day trips when necessary, as determined by supervisor or designee.
Report emergencies, breakdowns, delays, and/or accidents timely to the Transportation Supervisor.

Daily work is assigned by self; supervisor and director may schedule additional duties as needed. Requires independent judgment and/or technical knowledge to determine if items should be repaired or replaced; to prioritize repairs according to safety concerns, severity of needed repairs, and the immediate need to return the vehicle to service; and to properly handle passengers with difficult behaviors. Decision making is guided by state and federal laws, Colorado Department of Education rules and regulations, and Board policies. Decision making requires collaboration with supervisor and occasionally with the Director of Support Services. Navigate routes effectively using the provided smartphone apps
Maintain regular communication with our dedicated Driver Support team regarding route timing
Manage loading and unloading of vehicles efficiently
Deliver Ridwell bins and new member kits to members' homes
Provide excellent customer service when interacting with Ridwell members
Work safely outdoors and in all weather conditions, various temperature extremes, including heat, cold, moisture, and wind

Essential Functions:

Conducts daily post-trip vehicle inspection as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
Maintains vehicles to ensure safe conditions; includes daily inspections of tires, lights, signals, glass, etc. Vehicle fluids and tire air pressures must be checked and serviced daily
Ensures vehicle is ready for next-day business; including fuel fills and pre-loads, whenever possible
Learns and understands equipment thoroughly to ensure safe operations
Demonstrates to customers how to operate the equipment being delivered to them in a safe and effective manner
Inspects all equipment for damage at time of pick up. Documents findings and submits damage information to Rental Counter personnel upon return to the store or branch location
