Job Summary:
The nurse practitioner (NP) or physician assistant (PA) within the acute care hospital setting works in collaboration with, and is an integral member of, a multidisciplinary health care team. The NP/PA functions primarily as a hospitalist in an inpatient setting, managing the care of acute/complex chronically ill patients. The NP/PA is typically on a service aligned team managing the patient care from step down to discharge. The NP/PA may have responsibilities for same patient population during follow up outpatient visits. The NP/PA has a strong foundation in evidenced based practice/education and provides an environment of safe quality care. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
? Assessment of Health Status
? Performs and documents in the medical record a complete history and physical examination for acute and complex chronically ill patients.
? Orders and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
? The nurse practitioner or physician assistant may serve as the first responder for both nursing and house staff in the event of patient status changes, orders, and in situations requiring procedural and resuscitative interventions.
? Assesses for risks associated with the care of the acute and complex chronically ill patient including: medication side effects, immobility, impaired nutrition, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, immunocompetence, invasive interventions and diagnostic procedures.
? Coordinates daily rounds with the Attending physician teams, presents 24 hour patient report, collaborates in plan of care, and follows assigned patient population throughout the day.

Department Summary
The Vanderbilt Neurological ICU is one of the largest in the country with 23 ICU beds and 12 step-down beds. Our large referral base ensures we are consistently treating a full range of neurology and neurosurgical patients. Patients travel from all over the Southeastern region of the United States to receive the specialized care that we provide. As a Comprehensive Stroke Center, we provide top level care and unique services to give our patients the best chance at recovery. Our specially trained Critical Care team is on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing quick access to expert care. Using a multidisciplinary approach helps promote team learning, group dynamics, and excellent patient care. Our patient care focus includes: monitoring the neurological status of our patients; detecting cues of neurological decline; early intervention; quick return to optimal health; and maintenance of ideal neurological status.
Our ICU specializes in providing critical care to patients with: brain tumors; strokes; spinal cord injury; neuromuscular disorders; and many other diseases of the brain, peripheral nerves, and spinal cord. The neurological patient population often has extreme deficits, which require the bedside staff to have excellent neurological assessment skills - thus, our team prides themselves on their teamwork and ever-evolving skill-sets. Our excellence in patient care was recognized at a unit level in 2014, when we were awarded the AACN Beacon Award and the Professional Research Consultants, Inc Excellence in Healthcare award for Overall Quality of Care.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Obtains and documents a health history; performs and documents complete, system-focused, or symptom-specific physical examination, assessment and plan of care.

The PA will play a critical role in the surgical recovery of organs for transplantation, collaborating with transplant surgeons, donor hospitals, and the recovery team to ensure high-quality procurement procedures.
Department Summary:
The Division of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation participates in a comprehensive medical-surgical-radiologic hepatobiliary referral service, emphasizing diagnosis and medical management of liver and bile duct diseases with a variety of treatment strategies, including liver resection, RF ablation, alcohol injection, chemoembolization, portosystemic shunting, TIPS, laparoscopic procedures, and biliary bypass, as well as liver transplantation.
The liver transplantation program is part of the Vanderbilt Transplant Center, which represents a major commitment to the expanding and important field of transplantation. The heart, lung, bone marrow, kidney, and pancreas transplantation programs closely interact with one another. The division also participates in a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment program in hepatobiliary disease, offered by the Vanderbilt Clinic. This multidisciplinary group evaluates patients to establish a diagnosis, assess the severity of the disease and develop a treatment plan.

Preferred Qualifications:
* At least 5 years of experience as a Physician Assistant
* Strong preference for PA's with experience in organ procurement, cardiac surgery, or abdominal surgery
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Perform or assist in surgical organ recovery procedures under the supervision of transplant surgeons.
* Provide comprehensive clinical assessments and manage donor physiology pre-recovery.
* Document and report findings to transplant centers and organ procurement organizations.
* Ensure accurate and timely completion of required donor medical records and recovery documentation.
* Maintain and prepare surgical equipment and supplies needed for organ recovery.
* Communicate with internal and external stakeholders including donor families, hospital staff, and transplant centers.
* Participate in on-call rotations, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
* Ensure compliance with all regulatory and safety protocols (UNOS, AOPO, CMS, etc.).

The Department of Surgery is accepting applications for a Physician Assistant in our Division of General Surgery, Colon and Rectal Surgery. This position will include responsibilities primarily at our regional location, Wilson County.
The Vanderbilt Colon and Rectal Surgery program and its highly skilled surgeons offer a range of approaches for colorectal cancer and other conditions of the colon and rectum. On the SICU at VUMC, we care for critically ill adult patients 18 years and older who are recovering from various surgical interventions and procedures. Our unit is unique because of the diversity of our patient population. We care for liver transplants, emergency general surgery, vascular, thoracic, orthopedics, surgical oncology patients, and frequently care for trauma and OB patients.
