VanderCook College of Music (VCM) is unique among music schools in its focus on music education. VanderCook offers both undergraduate and graduate studies in music education, with all the benefits of a conservatory setting. All of VanderCook's classes are taught by faculty, with a student-to-teacher ratio below 7:1. VCM's academics emphasize practical learning. Undergraduates learn conducting and arranging, as well as how to play more than 16 instruments. Once you've graduated from the bachelor's degree program, you'll be prepared and certified to teach K-12 music anywhere in the United States. The graduate program is designed for students with an undergraduate music degree who would like to become music educators. You can earn your teaching certificate, then go on to pursue an MEd if you'd like further training at VanderCook. Continuing education courses are also available for current music teachers who wish to strengthen their skills while earning graduate credit. Because of the college's dual emphasis on performance and academics, VanderCook's undergraduate admissions take your musicianship and academic background into consideration. Graduate admissions requirements include a bachelor's degree in music and, for certified applicants, a year of teaching experience. All applicants are required to audition. VanderCook College of Music offers institutional grants and scholarships, in addition to federal financial aid. Institutional aid is limited to undergraduate students.
