  • Senior Software Engineer, AI/ML

    Glue 4.2company rating

    San Francisco, CA jobs

Glue is a well-funded startup working on the next generation of work communication tools. We believe that today's work chat is noisy, unstructured, and not designed for productivity. We're drawing from decades of communication innovation in structured notes, email, groups, and real-time messaging to create a tool that gets out of the way and lets teams exchange information and make decisions in a more natural way. We're looking for an AI/ML Engineer with a strong foundation in large language models (LLMs) and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to help us build smart, useful, and scalable AI features. You'll work across the stack-from prototyping prompts and pipelines to shipping production systems-and play a key role in evaluating model performance and behavior. You'll collaborate across engineering, product, and design to ship experiences that feel magical-but are grounded in robust infrastructure and measurable outcomes. About You: Have shipped across the stack to production-from data ingestion and model integration to serving and monitoring-and understand what it takes to build resilient ML-powered features. Have dealt with issues like latency, cost, edge cases, and prompt brittleness, and you've built systems that people rely on Understand the nuances of RAG systems, including text chunking, hybrid retrieval (semantic + keyword), vector store tuning, and relevance optimization. A self-starter, a builder, a doer. You know how to architect a project the “right way”, but also know when to ask about requirements and make tradeoffs depending on the maturity of the project Care about details but know when to avoid getting lost in the weeds and prioritize the immediate outcomes needed. Want to be part of a scrappy, early team who is building something ambitious and exciting. What will help you succeed: 5+ years of engineering experience, ideally including ML, NLP, or applied AI experience 2+ years hands-on with LLMs, transformers, and production-grade generative AI systems 2+ years of experience with a server-side language such as Go, TypeScript, Python, etc. Experience building RAG systems using frameworks like LangChain, LlamaIndex, or custom stacks Experience with multi-modal inputs, fine-tuning open models, or orchestrating agent-style systems Familiarity with evaluation techniques, tooling (e.g., Braintrust, Promptfoo, etc.) and quality metrics Independent and self motivated-maintaining side projects or libraries a major plus We offer a competitive salary in addition to significant equity, a generous healthcare package, and whatever equipment you need to excel at your job. Flexible vacation policy-we're moving quickly but want a sustainable culture. This role will work out of our lovely San Francisco office. Bret was also one of Google's earliest product managers and co-creator of Google Maps. Before founding Sierra, Clay spent 18 years at Google, where he most recently led Google Labs. Earlier, he started and led Google's AR/VR effort, Project Starline, and Google Lens. Before that, Clay led the product and design teams for Google Workspace. What you'll do You'll join a full-stack data team building the systems making our AI agents measurably smarter with every interaction, building the real-time pipelines, analytics products, and deep personalization primitives that turn millions of conversations into business outcomes. You'll work across these areas: Data Foundations: Architect and build our core platform to handle data at scale with low latency. This includes our real-time eventing infrastructure, streaming and batch ETL pipelines, and our Iceberg-based data lakehouse. You're well-versed in data modeling best practices (dimensional modeling, star/snowflake schemas, slowly changing dimensions) and know how to optimize analytical query patterns for both traditional OLAP systems and modern cloud data warehouses. Product Engineering You have a portfolio of shipped data products, including analytics dashboards, data visualization tools, or alerting and exploration systems. You are a skilled full-stack engineer (e.g., TypeScript/React and a service layer like Go), with a keen eye for performance, API design, and polish. You excel at turning ambiguous questions into clear, intuitive interfaces. You have strong product sense around information architecture, handling empty states, and making complex data explainable. You have practical experience with ML-powered product features, such as personalization, recommendations, or classification systems. Shared Qualities Strong software engineering background with 4-7+ years of hands-on development experience in building and shipping production systems or products. • Software Engineer, Mobile

    Sierra 4.4company rating

    San Francisco, CA jobs

About us At Sierra, we're creating a platform to help businesses build better, more human customer experiences with AI. We are primarily an in-person company based in San Francisco, with growing offices in Atlanta, New York, London, France, Singapore, and Japan. We are guided by a set of values that are at the core of our actions and define our culture: Trust, Customer Obsession, Craftsmanship, Intensity, and Family. These values are the foundation of our work, and we are committed to upholding them in everything we do. Our co-founders are Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor. Bret currently serves as Board Chair of OpenAI. Previously, he was co-CEO of Salesforce (which had acquired the company he founded, Quip) and CTO of Facebook. The role We're looking for a Software Engineer focused on iOS and/or Android to own our Experience SDKs - the native building blocks our customers use to embed Sierra's chat and voice agents into their mobile apps. You'll be the technical lead for how Sierra shows up on mobile: UI surfaces, animations, voice interactions, performance, and deep operating-system integrations. You'll work closely with design and our web frontend team to make the mobile experience feel as considered and cohesive as our core product. What you'll do Own the mobile Experience SDKs for iOS and Android. Lead the architecture, implementation, and evolution of our native SDKs that embed Sierra chat and voice agents into customer apps. Make them a joy to integrate for other engineers and a delight to use for end users. Deepen OS-level integrations and interactions. Push into platform-native capabilities: notifications, background execution, voice and audio routing, app extensions, system share sheets, in-app attachments, deep links, and other operating-system surfaces that make agents feel truly “at home” on each platform. Design and ship best-in-class mobile interfaces. Work hand-in-hand with our design team to translate Figma concepts into fluid, responsive mobile experiences. Sweat the details on motion, gesture handling, transitions, and accessibility so the agent feels fast, natural, and trustworthy on every device. Create a robust SDK developer experience. Define clear APIs, documentation, and sample apps that make it simple for customer engineering teams to integrate Sierra. Focus on stability, versioning, upgrade paths, and metrics so that our mobile surfaces are as reliable as they are beautiful. Collaborate tightly with web frontend and product teams. Partner with our React/TypeScript frontend engineers to keep interactions, visual language, and behavior coherent across web and mobile. Work closely with product and PMM to bring new agent features to mobile in a way that feels native to each platform. Champion quality, performance, and craftsmanship. Set the bar for mobile engineering quality at Sierra: smooth animations, low latency, resilient offline behavior, and thoughtful error states. Instrument and profile the experience, then iterate to keep it fast and reliable at scale. Work across the stack when needed. While your center of gravity will be Swift and/or Kotlin, you'll occasionally dip into backend services (Go, GraphQL) or frontend code to unblock features or fine-tune end-to-end flows, working with the broader Product Engineering team. What you'll bring Deep mobile engineering expertise. Significant experience (typically 6-10+ years) building high-quality native mobile apps or SDKs on iOS (Swift) and/or Android (Kotlin). You've shipped production code used by large numbers of users and have the scars and judgment that come with that. Strong SDK and API design instincts. You've built or maintained SDKs, libraries, or shared frameworks before. You care about clean API surfaces, versioning, and backward compatibility, and you empathize with external developers trying to integrate your work. Product and UX sensitivity. You have a good feel for interaction design and visual quality. You notice details like animation timing, gesture ergonomics, and accessibility, and you're willing to iterate with design until the experience feels “just right.” This lines up strongly with our value of craftsmanship. High-bandwidth collaboration. You communicate clearly with designers, product managers, and other engineers. You can walk through tradeoffs, explain constraints, and adjust plans quickly as we learn from customers. Strong sense of ownership. You're comfortable owning big areas end to end, from rough concept through launch and iteration. You've thrived in fast-moving environments, can operate with limited structure, and care about shipping meaningful improvements quickly without sacrificing quality. Solid understanding of the broader stack. You don't need to be a backend specialist, but you understand how APIs, authentication, data models, and performance characteristics impact the mobile experience. Experience with GraphQL and/or Go is a plus. Even better… You've built mobile SDKs or framework-style products that other teams integrate into their own applications. You have experience with real-time or media-heavy experiences (messaging, voice, video, or streaming UI). You've worked on design systems, component libraries, or shared UI kits across platforms, and know how to balance consistency with platform-native conventions. Our values Trust: We build trust with our customers with our accountability, empathy, quality, and responsiveness. We build trust in AI by making it more accessible, safe, and useful. We build trust with each other by showing up for each other professionally and personally, creating an environment that enables all of us to do our best work.

What you'll do Build the Foundations of Trust. Design and ship systems that make Sierra's platform secure by default - spanning privacy, identity, authentication, authorization, and data security. You'll work across backend services, APIs, and infrastructure layers to embed security-conscious design into the core of our product. Own Cross-Cutting Systems. Partner with product and platform teams to implement and evolve Sierra's trust primitives: identity management, access control, auditability, and data lifecycle management. You'll make pragmatic design trade-offs between usability, performance, and security. Secure Agentic AI Systems. Build controls that ensure AI agents can't leak customer data, execute unauthorized actions, or be manipulated into behavior. Design runtime policy enforcement for tool use, implement safe agent sandboxing, and create boundaries that protect data while keeping agents powerful and useful. Automate and Scale Security-Adjacent Workflows. Create developer-friendly tooling to reduce risk and friction - whether through automating security checks in CI/CD, enforcing privacy boundaries through schema validation, or instrumenting runtime monitoring for sensitive events. What you'll bring Strong Software Engineering Skills. Experience building and maintaining production systems in Python, Go, or TypeScript. You're comfortable designing APIs, integrating with authentication or identity frameworks, and shipping high-quality code in a fast-paced environment. Security Mindset. You may not be a dedicated security engineer, but you think like one - considering how data flows, where it's stored, who can access it, and how to design for least privilege and transparency. Product and Platform Mindset. You care about building secure systems that enable, not block, innovation. You work closely with product teams to make trade-offs clear and help them move quickly without sacrificing trust. Curiosity and Ownership. You're the kind of engineer who goes deep - tracing how a token propagates through the stack, or how an LLM might interact with internal APIs - because you want to understand and strengthen the system. Even better if… You've worked on privacy, identity, trust & safety, auth/authz, or data protection systems. You've built security frameworks, libraries, or tooling that developers actually use or integrated security automation into CI/CD pipelines. You have exposure to AI systems or care about designing secure-by-default LLM applications. You think like an attacker - you naturally ask "what could go wrong?" when reviewing designs or while building systems. You've found or fixed real security issues in production systems. You thrive in 0→1 environments, where foundational systems have to balance speed, reliability, and trust. Our values Trust: We build trust with our customers with our accountability, empathy, quality, and responsiveness. We build trust in AI by making it more accessible, safe, and useful. We build trust with each other by showing up for each other professionally and personally, creating an environment that enables all of us to do our best work. Family: We know that balance and intensity are compatible, and we model it in our actions and processes. We are the best technology company for parents. We support and respect each other and celebrate each other's personal and professional achievements. About us At Sierra, we're creating a platform to help businesses build better, more human customer experiences with AI. We are primarily an in‑person company based in San Francisco, with growing offices in Atlanta, New York, London, and Singapore. We are guided by a set of values that are at the core of our actions and define our culture: Trust, Customer Obsession, Craftsmanship, Intensity, and Family. These values are the foundation of our work, and we are committed to upholding them in everything we do. Our co‑founders are Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor. Bret currently serves as Board Chair of OpenAI. Previously, he was co‑CEO of Salesforce (which had acquired the company he founded, Quip) and CTO of Facebook. Bret was also one of Google's earliest product managers and co‑creator of Google Maps. Before founding Sierra, Clay spent 18 years at Google, where he most recently led Google Labs. Earlier, he started and led Google's AR/VR effort, Project Starline, and Google Lens. Before that, Clay led the product and design teams for Google Workspace. What you'll do Sierra's engineering team has ~40 mostly senior engineers, including Mihai, Belinda, Arya, and Wei. We work in small, autonomous teams oriented around customer problems. Here are some examples of what you'll work on: Agentic Loop: What primitives do we need to build agents that are steerable and verifiable, but also conversational and empathetic? How do we future‑proof this as LLMs evolve? Retrieval: How do we ground answers in a customer's knowledge base? How do we use retrieved context conversationally, handling cases where the answer is unclear or needs clarification from the user? Evals: How do we measure an agent's quality? How do we empower our customers to improve agent quality? What you'll bring A passion for being on the frontier of AI products. Motivation and high‑agency to drive outcomes - we have a high‑autonomy culture and each team member has lots of agency to overcome obstacles and achieve customer impact. Alignment to our company values throughout your work, notably finding a balance between Craftsmanship, Customer Obsession, and Competitive Intensity. 4+ years hands‑on experience building production products and systems. Experience and comfort to build and ship full‑stack solutions. Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent professional experience. Even better… Experience building AI‑powered products. A sharp eye for design. Experience with Go and Typescript. Experience building developer tooling, programming languages, or databases. Leadership experience on technical projects or teams. Our values Trust: We build trust with our customers with our accountability, empathy, quality, and responsiveness. We build trust in AI by making it more accessible, safe, and useful. We build trust with each other by showing up for each other professionally and personally, creating an environment that enables all of us to do our best work. Customer Obsession: We deeply understand our customers' business goals and relentlessly focus on driving outcomes, not just technical milestones. Everyone at the company knows and spends time with our customers. When our customer is having an issue, we drop everything and fix it. Craftsmanship: We get the details right, from the words on the page to the system architecture. We have good taste. When we notice something isn't right, we take the time to fix it. We are proud of the products we produce. We continuously self‑reflect to continuously self‑improve. Intensity: We know we don't have the luxury of patience. We play to win. We care about our product being the best, and when it isn't, we fix it. When we fail, we talk about it openly and without blame so we succeed the next time. Family: We know that balance and intensity are compatible, and we model it in our actions and processes. We are the best technology company for parents.
