1953

Varian opened its Palo Alto Microwave Tube Division in 1953 in Building 1 of the Stanford Industrial Park.

1959

1959: The firm creates an electronic vacuum pumps business division.

1981

Varian had about $640 million in sales in 1981 from its growing and diversified high-tech product lines.

1982

In another bid to bring its balance sheet in line with its technological ability, Varian brought in a new president in 1982, Thomas Sege.

1989

1989: While sales reach $1.3 billion, Varian is plagued with integration problems and spotty profits.

1992

Phase two of the process, which was started in 1992, was a long-term goal of significantly improved quality and service.

1994

1994: Varian posts record sales and earnings.

1998

Overall, sales were down nearly 11 percent in 1998 because of the slump in the market.

1999

In 1999, after spinning off its instrument and semiconductor units, it was renamed Varian Medical Systems, a multinational organization focusing on products for radiotherapy, radiosurgery, and X-ray imaging.

2001

2001: Varian, Inc. grows through acquisition and remains committed to developing its life sciences business.

2006

As of the end of 2006, the company had more than $1.6 billion in sales, and employed more than 4,200 employees in 56 sales and support offices around the world as well as in manufacturing and R&D operations in Canada, China, England, Finland, France, Germany, Switzerland, and the United States

2017

On January 30, 2017, spin-off of Varex Imaging Corporation (manufacturing of X-ray imaging products) from Varian Medical Systems had been successfully completed.

2018

In January 2018, the company announced the acquisition of Sirtex Medical for $1.3 billion.

2019

In 2019, the company acquired CyberHeart, a privately-held company with intellectual property (IP) that covers the use of radiation in the heart (cardiac radioablation) and other forms of radiosurgery for cardiovascular disease.
