Provides support during surgery to the Staff Veterinarians.
Under supervision of a RVT, administers pharmaceuticals such as medications and vaccines.
Collects and prepares blood, urine, and feces samples.
Performs various procedures under the direct supervision of a Staff Veterinarian or RVT such as intramuscular, intravenous and subcutaneous injections
Maintains cleanliness of the surgery room and other related areas, to provide a safe, clean and sterile environment.
Must be punctual and maintain regular, predictable attendance.
Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the employer's safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.

Schedule spay/neuter appointments and completes appropriate paperwork for Spay Clinic related activities (i.e. filing, Spay Clinic correspondence, spay/neuter deposits and refunds, surgery reminders, telephone follow-ups, misc. reports).
Assists in tours, lectures, public education programs, special events and fundraising activities as needed.
Provides accurate information and friendly professional service to the public and to co-workers in a responsive, positive, courteous, truthful and tactful manner.

Knowledge of domestic animals including breeds, behavior, appropriate care and housing, common health problems, disease symptoms and handling techniques.

What You'll Do Here

Performs routine and basic animal procedures, including handling of NHP within the home cage, sedation, delivery of medications via the IM, SQ, topical, and PO routes, assessment of vital signs (TPR) on sedated animals, shaving of animals and preparation for surgical procedures, bandage application, basic wound care, and assessment of basic clinical signs of animals on treatment or under sedation.
Occasionally performs procedures on unsedated animals. May provide restraint for unsedated animals under supervision of the veterinarians or the senior level technicians.
Performs post-exposure protocols on NHP.
Performs basic cleaning and preparatory procedures within the animal procedure and technical staffing areas, including cleaning medical instruments, wrapping surgical packs for autoclaving, cleaning the surgical suite or procedure area after animal activity, and others at the request of the veterinarians and/or more senior level technicians.
Performs dose calculations for medications to be given based on initial orders from a veterinarian or as per SOP or study protocol and may be responsible for ordering controlled substances from the pharmacy for planned procedures.
Performs routine QC on all paperwork and performs computer entry and/or data retrieval as appropriate, to include scheduling of departmental tasks where appropriate.
Shares inventory and ordering responsibilities for supplies used by the department.
Shares responsibility for routine departmental cleaning and prep procedures, such as instrument care, pack wrapping, procedure room and procedure cart cleaning.
May perform routine maintenance on equipment within the veterinary staff department, including but not limited to: x-ray processors, microscopes, eye wash stations, etc.
What You'll Need to Succeed
BA/BS, Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), or completion of 2-year Veterinary Technician program preferred. An equivalent combination of experience may substitute for education requirements.
6-12 months basic animal handling and/or basic medical/veterinary experience is required.
This position is expected to pursue ALAT certification. CA State Veterinary Technician License (LVT) preferred.
Basic to Advanced computer skills.
Requires general reading, writing, and verbal communication skills. The ability to quickly understand and act on complex instructions delivered either verbally or in writing, and the ability to communicate either verbally or in writing with a wide variety of individuals in a professional, respectful, and clear manner.

We are currently looking to hire a Registered Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Technician to join our team! The ideal candidate will be a dependable, detail-oriented team player who loves pets and being part of a fun, supportive team. They will have experience rooming patients, surgical assisting experience, and knowledge of equipment used, drawing blood and running bloodwork, knowledge of x-rays and proper positioning, experience with proper animal handling and restraint, understanding the importance of client education, and being a positive and motivating team member.

A Day in the Life of a Banfield Veterinary Assistant
The Vet Assistant provides professional, efficient and exceptional service at all times, making sure that clients and pets are comfortable in the hospital. You will use your technical skills on a daily basis, within state practice acts and as outlined in the NAVTA guidelines for veterinary assistant skills and duties. Other responsibilities include:
* Helping maintain the flow of patients
* Communicating with the veterinarian and vet techs
* Carrying out or setting up procedures that do not require veterinarian or vet tech assistance
* Adhering to hospital standards that keep pets safe, and the treatment areas, exam rooms and labs clean and organized
