SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE AND FUNCTION The Veterinary Assistant supports the veterinarians and veterinary technicians in ensuring quality veterinary care for all pets, advocates for pets, educates clients on all aspects of pet health, and ensures a safe and effective hospital environment. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. Act as the extra eyes, ears and hands for the veterinarian and veterinary technician to ensure the best quality pet care and to maximize the veterinarian's and veterinary technician's productivity. Communicate with veterinarian, veterinary technicians and all other associates to maintain the flow of patients. Provide professional, efficient and exceptional service at all times. This includes performing or preparing procedures that do not require veterinarian or veterinary technician assistance, completing preparatory work for other procedures, ensuring that clients and pets are comfortable in the hospital, and monitoring hospitalized or surgical pets as allowed in the state practice acts. Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventive care, pet health needs, hospital services and other issues. Obtain relevant information and history from clients and maintain proper and complete medical charts. Ensure the safety of pets, clients and associates by utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile and organized treatment areas, exam rooms and labs. Assist with surgery as applicable. Utilize technical skills to the fullest, within state practice acts and as outlined in the NAVTA guidelines for veterinary assistant skills and duties. The primary function of the ECC Charge Technician is to maintain the hospitaI workflow in both ER and ICU. This role is also expected to promote professional growth through education and learning opportunities. This position will report directly to the Emergency Critical Care Support Team Managers. Essential Functions Manage same day call outs, movement of support staff at all locations to best support the hospital following current scheduling guidelines Assisting in filling schedule gaps within the coming week Work alongside the Front Desk Point to manage hospital flow Monitor the quality of patient care and report concerns to the DVM overseeing case, perform current in hospital patient audits Manage email "Charge Tech" inbox throughout Charge shift Work alongside Front Desk Point and Specialty Charge to connect clients with other team members, facilitate answers to questions, visitations, or medical updates Assist DVM's to ensure accuracy and completion of medical records, estimates, discharges, and final invoices are correct and performed in a timely manner Ensure if broken equipment, programs, inventory needs, perform troubleshooting, to attempt fixing or following proper protocol to ensure it is followed up on and recorded appropriately Submit order requests for IT, facilities, equipment and/or inventory, cc'ing self, department requesting/team member requesting. Follow up with any orders submitted Beginning of shift- Review schedule for the day (including on call schedules) Activate any additional staffing such as On-Call for ER and/or POC/AOC after discussing with DVM C heck in with Front Desk Point, Specialty Charge when applicable and all DVM's in beginning of shift and before leaving shift Ensure 1131 check in/ cat care duties are completed according to AERC standards and protocols Required to check work email after clocking in, prior to shift on floor to prepare to implement and help team with any changes, familiarize self with how to do all new tasks to confidently assist team members Round all pertinent information to next "Charge Tech" and fill out shift form for every shift Read/Respond to work email at least once per shift (floor and charge shifts) Floor Duties Prioritize and direct workflow for ER/ICU department including but not limited to "Splitting of the Hospital" Assisting with Job shadows/tours when needed Ensure all tasks on checklists are completed, assist in completing checklists as needed Assist in facilitating completion of diagnostics, ultrasounds, radiographs, and other patient related tasks/treatments/procedures Effectively delegate daily responsibilities to the support staff and oversee completion of tasks Maintain all aspects of client and patient care by delegating support to team members that have an excess in clients, medical plan performance, discharge performance, treatments, procedures, diagnostics, vitals, cleaning, or any other task that affects AERC's efficiency of client and patient care Adhere to "5-minute rule" when assisting with patients on the floor (i,e., you can help with tasks that will take only 5 minutes, do not take on full responsibility of any case that comes in.) Leadership Functions Know important protocols or where to locate protocols If a new team member is in need of additional training shifts and "Charge Tech" witnesses this, the "Charge Tech" is obligated to reach out to Training Department and disclosing the information When specific issues arise (i.e., equipment, front desk issues, interpersonal), contact appropriate people if basic trouble shooting has not been successful Fill out peer reviews for wage/merit increases as assigned by STM, in a timely manner Advocate for all support team members on the floor Facilitate the change of workflows, protocol changes or policy changes when needed, working with the Support Team Manager and the Compliance Manager Oversee performance of technical staff patient rounds to ensure they are focused and efficient Must comply with any employment laws/regulations etc. Must comply with any rules outlined in the AERC Guidebook and Provide feedback, coaching and training to team members' when required/requested Practice effective conflict resolution skills Assist with any client communication issues in the moment and assist with difficult conversations Communicate to Support Team Manager for documentation and follow up requirements when appropriate as well as document any significant conversations with team members from shift Advocate and assist team members to take their allotted breaks, facilitate a break schedule for each shift and team member. Utilize "breaker" for breaks when available If applicable, give access to Cubex for any new team members that have completed training This job description is a living document and may be altered by the Leadership team at any time.
