The ideal candidate will be team-oriented, low-drama, possessing experience and efficiency in the field as well as knowing how to communicate well! --

Our hospital balances superior medicine while maintaining a fun/positive work environment and operates Mon-Sat with no Sunday or after hours duties. A new addition to our staff should have a strong work ethic, be excellent with client communication and education, able to multi-task while being cheerful and have reliable transportation. Compensation varies by experience.

Responsibilities
How you'll make an impact:
* Our Veterinary Assistants assist the Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians in all of their duties
* The Veterinary Assistant helps to prepare animals for exams and surgery.
* The Veterinary Assistant aids in performing medical treatments.
* The Veterinary Assistant will perform or prepare laboratory tests.
* The Veterinary Assistant will administer medications under the direction of a Veterinarian or Veterinary Technician.

Qualifications
Physical demands and work environment
* The Veterinary Assistant must have the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds and lift over 50 pounds with the assistance of a coworker. Requires sufficient ambulatory skills.
* The Veterinary Assistant must be able to work in noisy work conditions with sounds from animals and equipment that can be moderately high.
* The Veterinary Assistant is routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and medication/controlled substances.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Provide the highest quality medical services, dental procedures and other surgical care to public, shelter, and rescue patients in our surgical program.
Work with clients to provide services tailored to their needs and the needs of their pets to build relationships enhance client education.
Function independently and as part of a team with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and client service representatives.
Be a team player who fosters a positive attitude.
Provide care for 20-30 cats and dogs per day in spay/neuter and soft tissue surgery.
Administer injections including pain medications, vaccinations, and other medications.
Administer subcutaneous fluids as needed.
Monitor vital signs of sedated and anesthetized patients in pre-operative, operative, and post-operative phases.
Provide treatments, take radiographs, and provide medical care as directed by the veterinarian.
Provide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients by using low-stress handling techniques.
Assist with patient exams, take medical history, perform diagnostic testing, and prepare medications to be sent home with patients.
Operate and ensure functionally of anesthetic machines, pulse oximeters, scales, and other equipment.
Assist with humane euthanasia.
Work with coworkers to clean and disinfect animal areas, equipment, instruments, and facility.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience: ideally 1+ years HQHVSN or shelter experience strongly preferred, but not required
Ability to lift and carry 40-plus pounds repeatedly throughout day with assistance,
Ability to work efficiently and calmly under challenging and emergency conditions
Ability to work independently and as part of team
Ability to work standing for 8 or more hours
Excellent animal handling skills (cats, dogs)
Exceptional customer service skills
Strong interest in animal welfare and serving the community
Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and ability to use electronic medical records system.

The City of Norfolk's Department of General Services is currently seeking a Veterinary Technician that provides daily care to exotic and domestic animals in exhibits and holding facilities. Participates in education, conservation and research involving the animal collection. Supervises the veterinary clinic operations and medical care program under the general direction of Animal Division management and the Veterinarian.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
+ Interpret medical histories and relay pertinent information to the Clinic Director.
+ Safely and humanely restrain companion animals with an emphasis on fear free and low stress techniques.
+ Accurately record medical information into the clinic software.
+ Administer vaccinations, microchips, sedatives, pre-anesthetic drugs, and anesthetic drugs under the direction of the Clinic Director.
+ Perform general anesthesia safely on canines, felines and small mammals.
+ Perform dental exams, cleanings, radiographs and extractions.
+ Perform diagnostic services for Clinic Director to interpret, document results, and communicate to Veterinary Assistants.
+ Recover patients from anesthesia.
+ Provide post-operative, vaccination, preventative care, medication and microchipping counseling to clients, escalating concerns and inquiries to Clinic Director as appropriate.
+ Clean, sanitize, and maintain veterinary equipment and surgical tools.
+ Assist Clinic Director in oversight, training, and support for Veterinary Assistants, drafting SOPs and maintaining inventory.
+ Perform other duties as assigned.
+ Ability to lift 30 pounds and to sit, stand, bend, stop and walk for a full workday.
+ Ability to work around pet dander, dust and other allergens.
+ Must be comfortable handling dogs, cats, and other small animals of varying sizes and temperaments.
+ Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
+ Ability to deal with difficult and stressful situations involving animals and customers.
+ Ability to use computer systems and learn new software.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with a two year associate's degree, diploma or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
Required:
+ One year of experience in the care and maintenance of exotic animals.
Preferred:
+ Education in Veterinary Technology, Veterinary Science or closely related field.
Additional Information & Requirements
+ Licensure in the State of Virginia as a Veterinary Technician required.
+ Valid Driver's License required.
Additional Preferred Certification:
+ Certification in euthanasia by injection for the State of Virginia or willing/able to become certified during first year of employment.
Signing Bonus:
+ This position is eligible for a one-time $5000 sign on bonus.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education.
