Responsibilities
14 shifts a month (12-hour shifts), includes nights, holidays, and weekends. Patient population consists of kidney, pancreas, and liver transplant recipients; kidney donors; hepatobiliary patients; general surgery procedures on pre- and post-transplant patients; inpatient liver transplant evaluations. Performs physical examinations and takes complex medical histories on high acuity patients. Orders and reviews laboratory studies, as well as diagnostic procedures. Reviews patients' progress and managing patient care accordingly. Maintains all required documentation for patient care. Develops treatment plans in conjunction with attending physicians to provide optimal patient medical and surgical management. Facilitates inpatient multidisciplinary rounds daily on post operative patients. Participates in continuing medical education to include specialty and sub-specialty meetings, boards, and conferences. Orders consultations and interacts with members of other specialty medical teams. Participates in and presents Morbidity and Mortality presentations. Participates in kidney and liver transplant selection committees. Participates in monthly APC education meetings. Participate in other meetings and trainings as outlined by leadership team. Procedures: Line/drain removal, wound care, suturing. Assists in the operating room as needed for kidney, pancreas, liver transplants. Other surgeries include laparoscopic/robotic hernia repairs, liver resections, PD catheter insertions/removals, donor nephrectomies, native nephrectomies, etc. Assists in the collection of data for research as necessary.
The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
Current licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant from the State of Utah.
Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Preferred:
Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Position Purpose:
The purpose of this position inherently involves providing excellent medical care to our Vetco Total Care full-service hospital patients and phenomenal customer care to their owners. The VeterinaryAssistant represents the mission and values to all clients. Essential Job Functions

* Help prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures and assist doctor and/or veterinary technician in anesthetizing patients. Under supervision of the veterinarian and/or veterinary technician, assistants will maintain patients safely under anesthesia while monitoring vital parameters, help monitor patients during recovery and prepare them for hospital discharge or transfer to an overnight care facility.
* Under supervision of the veterinarian and/or veterinary technician, perform in-hospital treatments for sick patients including giving injectable and oral medications as well as intravenous fluid therapy; keep patients clean, watered, and fed (when indicated and directed by doctor), safely walk canine patients when necessary for elimination.
* Under direction of the HOM/HLOD, assist in the training of new staff members and general dissemination of knowledge as required.
* Keep hospital environment neat and clean; perform regular cleaning of environment based on necessity as well as based on a pre-determined maintenance schedule.

Nature of Supervision
In all activities related to the care of individual patients, the incumbent will take direct supervision from the veterinarians as well as the Veterinary Technician. For purposes of overall supervision, the incumbent takes direction from the HOM/HLOD or from the supervising technician for the shift.

Like all team members, the VeterinaryAssistant plays a crucial role in ensuring that day-to-day operation of the hospital is efficient and provides an optimal experience for our patients and clients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Two (2) years' experience as a VetAssistant or Vet Tech, or other closely related field, OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience OR Associate degree from an accredited college or university in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology,

Preferred experience to include high volume spay and neuter/Shelter medicine at the end of min qualifications.
A valid Driver's License recognized by the State of Utah is required to operate a Salt Lake County vehicle at the time of hire.
Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.
Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Monitors animal population for any change in behavior, appetite, water/food intake, or any sign of illness; reports unusual situations to the veterinarian.
Provides treatment and administers medications as directed. Husbandry and nursing care of shelter animals.
Ensures clinic areas, hospital area, cages, pharmacy/lab area are re-stocked, clean, and organized.
Verifies all animals have been vaccinated, microchipped and spayed/neutered prior to adoption.
Safe handling and administration of vaccines, injectable medications, and sharps disposal.
Restrains animals for exam and assists in advanced treatments and routine diagnostics. Including radiographs and collecting samples for routine laboratory test. Prepares samples for testing at diagnostic laboratory.
Surgical instrument care, preparation and sterilization of surgical packs. Daily disinfection and maintenance of surgical suite and equipment. Ensures surgical laundry is washed and prepared for use.
Performs routine diagnostics, including radiographs, in house laboratory sample collection and testing.
Prepares routine samples for testing at diagnostic laboratory. • Surgical instrument care, preparation, and sterilization of surgical packs.
Daily disinfection and maintenance of surgical suite, equipment, and supplies.
Administration of anesthetic medication by inhalation/intubation or intravenous injection, assistsveterinarian during surgery as needed. Surgical preparations and positioning of patient.
Monitors animals during and after surgical procedures and provides appropriate nursing care to ensure animals are kept comfortable to optimize recovery.
Provide basic dental cleaning and charting. • Responsible for handling and documenting of controlled substances and following all policies and procedures related to such.
Dispenses prescribed medications and discharges animals to owners, providing at home care instructions.
Provides advanced at home care instruction and demonstration for fosters and adopters.
Performs humane euthanasia in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Maintaining medical records for individual animals, including associated charges for services
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA) Knowledge of:
• Expression of symptoms and/or diseases in animals.
Current infectious disease control methods.
• Methods and techniques of humane animal care and handling.
• Radiation safety.
• Principles and practices of current veterinary medicine and animal care.
