What You'll Do
Assistveterinarians with routine general practice procedures: exams, diagnostics, anesthesia monitoring, lab work, venipuncture, and catheter placement
Assistveterinarians with routine general practice surgeries such as spay/neuter and mass removals
Support with patient intake, client communication, and education on treatments
Help manage patient flow and appointment coordination in a fast-paced setting
Collaborate with the GP team to shape workflows, culture, and best practices from the start
Ideal Candidate

WHAT YOU'LL DO
Provide compassionate care to pet patients and their loved ones
Keep accurate medical records in accordance with hospital policy
Prepare and maintain the exam rooms and treatment areas
Perform physical assessments and record your observations
Keep furry friends calm and still during procedures (sometimes using chin scratches!)
Prepare estimates for procedures and discuss financial commitments with clients
Explain necessary follow-up and home care instructions
Stock clinic treatment area and exam rooms, and inform inventory manager when supplies need to be ordered
Assist the Veterinarian in medical, surgical, and dental procedures (be comfortable with blood draws; prepare patients for surgery; administer anesthesia; monitor patients during surgery and recovery; administer fluids)
Care for all surgical materials and keep the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery

Hotham Veterinary Services is currently a 2-doctor practice with 2 locations. Our first hospital in Presque Isle and a second location in Houlton, Maine. We have a fantastic support team at each site and well-equipped, well cared for hospitals that include ultrasound, full lab, and digital radiology. We provide and maintain a well-stocked ambulatory unit for large animal services.

Veterinary Technician

WHAT YOU'LL DO
Provides compassionate care to patients and clients.
Keeps accurate medical records in accordance with hospital policy, including in-depth knowledge of medical terminology and record keeping.
Prepares and maintains the exam rooms and treatment areas.
Performs physical assessments and records observations, including triaging and problem solving to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Safe, low stress and compassionate handling and restraint.
Prepares estimates for procedures and discusses financial commitments with clients.
Venipuncture and IV catheter placement
Pharmacy skills, including protocols for filling in-house.
Radiography and digital imaging
Monitors vitals
Sample collection and processing for in-house and reference labs
Builds initial rapport and long-term relationships with both pets and clients, successfully communicates plans and estimates to owners.
Assists the Veterinarian in medical, surgical and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery; administers anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids.
Communicates within the team, proactively advocating for their patient's needs.
Operates practice management software (Cornerstone) and related software packages.

REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent
Veterinary Technician Certification (CVT) or License (LVT) is highly desirable; equivalent training and experience may substitute.
Surgical, dental and laser skills are appreciated, but not required.
Genuinely enjoys working with animals and can deal with them even when they are stressed, ill or in pain. Dedication to safety for all parties involved.
Must have a positive attitude and be a team player.
Strong work ethic and track record of being reliable.
Willingness to learn new skills and techniques.

Requirements
As a Dermatology Veterinary Technician Assistant, you will support the smooth operation of our specialty department and ensure high-quality patient care. Responsibilities include:
Assisting dermatology clinicians with patient exams, diagnostics, and procedures
Supporting accurate record keeping, discharge instructions, and communication with clients and referring veterinarians
Entering diagnostic summaries, histories, and specialty charges
Performing accurate TPRs and recognizing abnormal findings
Providing safe and effective restraint for examinations and procedures
Assisting with radiographs (proper positioning, labeling, and PPE)
Measuring and recording blood pressure accurately
Preparing medications, organizing supplies, and maintaining efficient workflow in the dermatology treatment area

Salary: $22.00 - $25.00 per hour, determined by the candidate's skills, experience, and qualifications.
Schedule: This is a full-time position, Monday-Friday from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, typically scheduled as four 10-hour shifts. Consistent schedule with a set day off. No weekend hours!
Key Responsibilities:
Client Communication: Provide status updates for hospitalized patients, home care instructions, pre- and post-op instructions, and medication administration guidance. Address client medical questions with confidence and direct complex inquiries to veterinarians.
Client Education & Support: Educate clients on preventative medicine, wellness care by age, vaccine requirements, laboratory procedures, and support hospital financial policies by preparing estimates and discussing financial commitments.
Customer Service: Greet clients, escort them and their pets into exam rooms, ensure smooth transitions to the front desk, and promote the practice's products, programs, and services.
Animal Handling & Care: Restrain animals safely and compassionately, assistveterinarians in medical, surgical, and dental procedures, prepare patients for surgery, administer anesthesia, monitor patients during surgery and recovery, and administer fluids.
Facility & Equipment Maintenance: Properly care for all surgical materials, maintain hospital equipment and inventory, and ensure the surgery room, ICU area, exam rooms, and treatment areas are prepared and maintained.
Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed patient records using a paperless medical record system, ensuring all procedures, vaccinations, and notes are documented for proper billing.
Pharmacy Assistance: Assist with dispensing medications as directed by the veterinarian, prepare prescription labels, and appropriately package medication.
Safety & Technical Skills: Follow DEA, OSHA, and hospital safety guidelines; administer SQ, IM, and IV injections; perform laboratory tests, radiographs, and electrocardiograms; place IV catheters; perform emergency treatments such as bleeding control and external cardiac massage.
Qualifications:
Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) certification is preferred.
Ability to handle animals safely and compassionately.
Knowledgeable about common disease states and able to alert veterinarians to changes in patient conditions.
Familiarity with DEA, OSHA, and hospital safety guidelines.
