A Day in the Life of a Banfield Veterinary Assistant
The Vet Assistant provides professional, efficient and exceptional service at all times, making sure that clients and pets are comfortable in the hospital. You will use your technical skills on a daily basis, within state practice acts and as outlined in the NAVTA guidelines for veterinary assistant skills and duties. Other responsibilities include:
· Helping maintain the flow of patients
· Communicating with the veterinarian and vet techs
· Carrying out or setting up procedures that do not require veterinarian or vet tech assistance

Overview:
The Florida Gaming Control Commission is responsible for exercising all regulatory and executive powers of the state with respect to legal gaming, including pari-mutuel wagering, cardrooms, slot machine facilities, oversight of gaming compacts, and other forms of gambling authorized by state law, excluding the Lottery, as well as directly enforcing Florida's gaming laws and combatting illegal gambling activities.
The agency is overseen by five Commissioners who are appointed by the Governor, with Commissioners appointing an Executive Director who leads a team of nearly 200 staff members. The mission of the Florida Gaming Control Commission is to preserve and protect the integrity of gaming activities through fair regulation, licensing, effective criminal investigation, and enforcement.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:
Under supervision, the vet assistant carries out essential routine and non-routine tasks within work parameters assisting veterinary and administrative staff in enforcing both the Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering and Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) regulations, standards, procedures, and chain-of-custody protocols at licensed and regulated pari-mutuel facilities within the State of Florida. The duties are as follows:
* Ensuring a safe, secure, and healthy detention barn work environment by following chain-of-custody protocols and monitoring and enforcing detention barn area security, sanitations, and safety regulations; maintaining detention barn stalls and barn area to ensure they are always clean and free of safety hazards.
* Monitoring and enforcing compliance with applicable Florida rules relating to the detention and handling of horses at licensed racetrack facilities.
* Verifying document identification of horses designated for specimen collection.
* Escorting designated horses from the finish line to the detention barn for the purpose of facilitating specimen collection.
* Ensuring compliance with biological specimen collection, documentation, storage, shipping, and chain-of-custody procedures for specimens that must be subsequently shipped offsite for comprehensive testing.
* Ensuring racehorses are treated properly and humanely by observing the behavior of animals, trainers, and other personnel within the detention barn area and reporting recognized anomalies to supervisor.
* Assisting the designated security attendant in maintaining the detention barn area security.
* May be required to participate in hearings or depositions, as to the nature of specific biological specimen collection efforts, and associated documentation related to a specific racehorse or horses.
* Completes other related assignments and responsibilities as reasonably assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Knowledge of and ability to understand and consistently apply all related Florida Statutes, and FGCC, HISA and HIWU policies, procedures, and operating protocols, as applicable;
* Ability to work efficiently and effectively under stressful conditions; learn new skills, multitask, prioritize, and manage time proficiently;
* Ability to recognize important characteristics of animal behavior (e.g., able to identify aggressive or fearful behavior);

Minimum Qualifications:
* High School Diploma or its equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications, not required:
* Experience with thoroughbred racehorses, other breeds of horses, or other large animals; and
* Experience and/or training; or a combination of extensive education and experience in the Florida regulated thoroughbred industry or a similar jurisdiction.

Nature of Supervision

About the Role:
As a Veterinary Technician at Doral Centre Animal Hospital, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional emergency care to our patients. You will work alongside a dynamic team of veterinarians, support staff, and technicians to deliver top-tier care in both routine and critical situations. Key Responsibilities
Emergency and Critical Care Support: Provide urgent care and stabilization to critically ill or injured pets. You will assist with triage, monitoring vital signs, and administering life-saving treatments.
Diagnostic Support: Perform diagnostic tests (e.g., radiographs, blood work, urinalysis) and interpret results to guide treatment plans. You will assist with lab work, handling specimens, and communicating test results efficiently.
Patient Monitoring and Care: Continuously monitor patients during emergency situations, surgeries, and recovery. Administer fluids, medications, and treatments as prescribed, ensuring optimal patient comfort and safety.
Surgical Assistance: Assist in surgeries and anesthesia management, including intubation, anesthesia induction, and monitoring during procedures. Provide post-operative care to ensure smooth recovery for patients.
IV Catheter Placement & Venipuncture: Perform venipuncture for blood draws and fluid therapy. Place intravenous catheters with precision for ongoing patient care.
Client Communication & Education: Serve as a liaison between veterinarians and pet owners, providing clear communication on treatment plans, prognosis, and aftercare instructions. Educate clients on preventative care and address any concerns.
Team Collaboration: Work closely with a team of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and support staff. Ensure smooth workflow in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high level of professionalism and teamwork.
Record-Keeping & Documentation: Maintain accurate and thorough medical records for all patients, documenting observations, treatments, and procedures in our electronic medical record (EMR) system.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of veterinary technician experience in a clinical or emergency care setting is required. Experience handling high-acuity cases and trauma care is highly valued.
Certification: CVT (Certified Veterinary Technician) certification is preferred, but not required. We welcome candidates with equivalent hands-on experience who are passionate about advancing their skills in veterinary medicine.
Anesthesia & Surgical Support: Solid experience in assisting with anesthesia induction, intubation, and monitoring during surgeries is essential. Ability to assist in emergency surgeries is a must.
Critical Care Competency: Experience with emergency procedures, including CPR, stabilization, and managing trauma patients, is highly desirable. You should be able to remain calm under pressure and think quickly in critical situations.
Diagnostic Proficiency: Skilled in performing diagnostic procedures, including radiology, bloodwork, and laboratory testing. Strong attention to detail in interpreting and communicating results is critical.
Communication & Client Service: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain medical procedures and treatment plans in a clear, compassionate, and professional manner to pet owners.
Team-Oriented: Ability to work well in a collaborative, team-driven environment. You will need to be flexible, adaptable, and able to support the team wherever necessary.
Attention to Detail: Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
Physical Stamina: Ability to handle the physical demands of the job, including lifting and moving patients, standing for long periods, and responding quickly to emergencies.
