Responsibilities
How you'll make an impact:

Job Responsibilities:
Veterinary assistants care for animals under the supervision of a veterinarian or veterinary technician. They are responsible for feeding, exercising, and maintaining cleanliness of the animals, and restraint during examinations and treatment. Vet assistants also sometimes perform lab work, such as drawing blood, collecting urine samples, and running appropriate tests on these samples.
Education, Training, & Certification:
This occupation does not require advanced education, but you will need training.
Education: You will need a high school or equivalent diploma. Having completed a two-year Veterinary Assistant, postsecondary program will be highly advantageous.
Training: South Sioux Animal Hospital will provide on-the-job training, but someone who has had prior, relevant experience working with cats and dog is preferred.

The Veterinary Technician is a key member of our team and will join a team of 6 veterinary technicians and 6 veterinarians to support a high quality veterinary medical program for our animals at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium and the Lee G. OHDZA offers an exceptional opportunity for individuals to work in a unique setting that encompasses a zoo, aquarium and safari park within one company. We anticipate the launch of a newly renovated hospital at the Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari Park in the coming year, followed by the inauguration of our state of the art 32,000 square foot Bill and Bernice Grewcock Animal Hospital in late 2025. The new zoo hospital will feature a sophisticated imaging suite, complete with a CT scanner, as well as enhanced laboratory facilities. This position includes a comprehensive benefit package, ongoing CE/licensure/association support, and full uniform provision.

Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):
Collaborate with veterinary technician team to provide clinical support and provide excellent preventative, routine, and emergency care to all the Zoo, Aquarium, and Safari Park animals.
Assist animal care professionals in the operant conditioning of animals for medical behaviors.
Assist maintenance of hospital programming through supply management, equipment care, hospital readiness and hospital cleanliness.
Prepare for and assist with veterinary examinations with an emphasis on monitoring anesthesia (cardiopulmonary support and monitoring) and performing diagnostics (phlebotomy, radiographs, blood work, fecals, cytologies, etc.).
Provide clinical laboratory support through in-house manual and point-of-care diagnostics (fecals, urinalysis, CBCs, biochemistry and cytologies) and sample submission to outside laboratories.
Provide husbandry assistance for hand-rearing neonates as needed in collaboration with Hospital Keeper.
Participate in maintaining a high-volume sample storage program.
Provide daily care, observation and monitoring of hospitalized cases including feeding, cleaning, enrichment, and training.
Assist with pharmacy program by filling prescriptions and assist Hospital Supervisor and Lead Veterinary Technicians with inventory control and medication expiration dates.
Provide general support to the animal health department by ensuring all documentation and records are accurate, completed in a timely manner, and all regulatory requirements are met.
Assist in controlled drug tracking and documentation in accordance with internal protocols to meet regulatory standards.
Perform hospital equipment maintenance and ensure equipment is in ready-to-use condition.

Provide mentorship for visiting veterinary students, Zoo Academy students, and interns.

Requirements:
Must have earned a degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary technician program and must have successfully passed the VTNE (Veterinary Technician National Examination).
Must have the ability to obtain a registered veterinary technician license from the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Board within 6 months of the hire date.
Able to work in a team environment with animal care staff and other departments and foster trust-based relationships.
Must have the willingness and ability to function as a team member in a fast-paced environment with a high caseload.
Must possess high emotional intelligence, and situational awareness.
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, preferred.
Must possess or be able to obtain a valid state driver's license with a good driving history.

The kennel tech is responsible for the care, feeding, medicating, and cleaning of our patients in the hospital and boarding facility. This job involves cleaning, laundry, bathing, feeding, walking dogs, and medicating patients. You are responsible for restocking supplies for kennels. Purpose of Position: Provide veterinary medical and surgical nursing skills with a focus on shelter medicine. Veterinary technicians enhance the lives of animals at the Nebraska Humane Society (NHS) by partnering with fellow colleagues to prepare animals for adoption and bring justice to victims of cruelty. Alleviate suffering by rotating one day per week through euthanasia services for shelter animals. Periodic rotation through the NHS Spay & Neuter Center occurs on an as need basis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Perform medication rounds for shelter animals
Administer prescribed pain medications, antibiotics, antiparasitics and vaccines
Relieve animal suffering and comfort the sick
Provide supplemental feeding to puppies and kittens too young for adoption
Assist NHS veterinarians in disease surveillance
Collect specimens and perform diagnostics as prescribed by NHS veterinarians - common diagnostics include:
Digital radiographs
Fecal exams by centrifugation
Skin scrapes and cytology
In-house CBC and chemistry panels
DTMs, Wood's Lamp and trichograms
Heartworm, FeLV and FIV tests
UAs
Parvo tests
Submit various diagnostics to off-site laboratories
Provide enrichment and stress reduction for animals through humane handling
Perform medical rounds with NHS veterinarians
Ensure prompt and accurate medical record updates
Assist in examination of shelter animals
Administer pre-medication, induce anesthesia and intubate surgical patients
Direct other staff and volunteers on a rotational basis as lead anesthetist
Monitor anesthetized patients
Assist in animal emergency triage and resuscitation
Place IV catheters
Prepare animals for surgery
Perform dental cleaning and non-surgical extraction as allowed for by state regulations
Recover anesthesia patients with the assistance of trained volunteers
Handle and record controlled substances for large volumes of surgical patients
Assist in training new staff members, department volunteers, veterinary students and interns
Collaborate with personnel from other NHS departments
Perform safe and humane euthanasia when necessary on a limited basis in AMD

Required
Minimum: Associate of Applied Science Degree in Veterinary Technology from an accredited program
Must be a licensed veterinary technician in the state of Nebraska
Consideration will be given to veterinary technicians currently licensed in another state with a background in shelter/rescue work - must be able to obtain Nebraska veterinary technician license
Must adhere to applicable state and federal laws governing the practice of veterinary medicine
Display affection and compassion for animals and concern for their welfare
Must adhere to highest ethical standards; possess trustworthiness, exercise maturity and sound independent judgment while maintaining a professional manner and personal appearance
Ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing
