Under general supervision performs a variety of duties to encompass but not limited to the care and management of patients in accordance with the Brown University Health mission vision values with consideration of the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns. Responsibilities:
As a member of the team you will be assigned to a primary neurosurgical practice and will be involved with the care of our neurosurgical pre-operative and post-operative patients. You will work closely with and be directly supervised by attending surgeons and other Advanced Practice Providers.
Comprehensive evaluation and management of patients seen in the outpatient neurosurgery clinic. Patients will be seen in shared clinics with the neurosurgeon as well as some independent clinics (without the neurosurgeon).
Prepare patients for surgery (pre-op evaluations history & physical obtaining medical clearances).
Ordering and interpreting diagnostic work-up including X-rays MRIs Cat Scans EMGs blood tests wound cultures referring to other specialties coordination of care and prescribing medications including narcotics.
Prepare and dictate outpatient clinic notes.
Serve as a resource to referring physicians/staff/patients/families.
Provide patient and family education and instruction on pre-operative and post operative care.
Perform minor office procedures including suture removal drain removal surgical wound care and other various outpatient procedure as directed by the Neurosurgeon.
Triaging patient calls and patient portal questions and contacting the neurosurgeon when appropriate.
Provide follow-up care including the appropriate adjustment of medications in accordance with established protocols or in response to specific instructions from supervising physician.
Inform and teach patients and families about planned surgical or diagnostic procedures health promotion/disease prevention activities medications and treatments and assist with the development of teaching materials for patients and families.
Maintain familiarity with coding documentation.
Interacting with our inpatient Advance Practice Providers and Neurosurgery residents and junior attendings for continuity of care.
First assisting in the operating room when needed.
Provide outpatient cross-coverage to other Neurosurgery specialties in the outpatient group when needed.
Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Bachelors Degree in Biology and Graduate of Accredited Physician Assistant Program required.
Candidates with neurosurgery experience a plus but will consider enthusiastic new graduates or APPs in other specialties interested in Neurosurgery.
Licensed or eligible to be licensed to practice in the state of Rhode Island.

POSITION RESPONSBILITIES
VeterinaryAssistants in this role are expected to actively work toward and complete Level 1 and Level 2 VeterinaryAssistant skill sign-offs as part of their professional development. Maintain hospital laundry.
Bathe and brush patients as needed.
Collect non-sterile urine and fecal samples for lab submission.
Recognize and report unusual conditions or abnormal behaviors in patients.
Assist with administration of medications under technician or doctor supervision.
Clean equipment and facilities according to hospital protocols, using approved TVETS chemicals and following safety procedures.
Maintain cleanliness and stock exam rooms.
Assist with processing deliveries.
Clean, wrap, sterilize, and maintain ECC surgical instruments per SOP.
Assist with setup, operation, and maintenance of patient monitoring equipment and warming devices.
Aseptically prep patients for procedures.
Sterilely glove up when required.
Operate autoclave and ultrasonic cleaner.
Process client requests for end-of-life patient remains in accordance with SOP.
Demonstrate critical thinking when communicating with clients to assess concerns, urgency, and need for intervention.

Register and check patients in and out of the hospital.
Handle monetary transactions during shift.
Complete aftercare paperwork and procedures per SOP.
Participate in client care rounds at the start and end of each shift.

SCHEDULE
Shifts TBD. Weekend and holiday coverage as required by the service. Schedule subject to change at managements discretion to meet the needs of the service. This position is considered essential and is therefore required to work as scheduled during inclement weather (i.e., during snowstorms).
