About This Role The Veterinary Health Center (VHC) within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a part-time Veterinary Assistant to join our dedicated team to help facilitate exemplary patient care in the Small Animal ICU. This position will provide assistance to VHC veterinarians and veterinary nurses in the performance of their duties. This will include providing patient care support, maintaining area cleanliness and equipment upkeep, stocking of service supplies, and ensuring accuracy of medical records. Working hours will be part-time and will primarily provide weekend coverage in the Small Animal ICU. This is a temporary, one-year assignment. Veterinary Assistants will collect thorough patient histories and document the patient visit in the EMRs. * Assist doctors with appointments (routine and emergency), surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia, under supervision from the veterinarian credentialed veterinary technician, , HOM and HLOD. * Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications at the direction of the veterinarian and help maintain the electronic medical record. * Schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results to doctor and clients, and maintain and update client/patient records. * Help prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures and assist doctor and/or veterinary technician in anesthetizing patients. Under supervision of the veterinarian and/or veterinary technician, assistants will maintain patients safely under anesthesia while monitoring vital parameters, help monitor patients during recovery and prepare them for hospital discharge or transfer to an overnight care facility. * Under supervision of the veterinarian and/or veterinary technician, perform in-hospital treatments for sick patients including giving injectable and oral medications as well as intravenous fluid therapy; keep patients clean, watered, and fed (when indicated and directed by doctor), safely walk canine patients when necessary for elimination. * Under direction of the HOM/HLOD, assist in the training of new staff members and general dissemination of knowledge as required. * Keep hospital environment neat and clean; perform regular cleaning of environment based on necessity as well as based on a pre-determined maintenance schedule. Other Duties and Responsibilities * Perform additional duties as assigned * Provide backup phone and front desk support as needed Nature of Supervision In all activities related to the care of individual patients, the incumbent will take direct supervision from the veterinarians as well as the Veterinary Technician. For purposes of overall supervision, the incumbent takes direction from the HOM/HLOD or from the supervising technician for the shift. Reporting Structure: The Veterinary Assistant is under the direct guidance and supervision of the Veterinary Technician Team Leader and veterinarians who will indicate general assignments, limitations and priorities. Recurring assignments are performed independently. Deviations or unfamiliar situations are referred to the supervisor. Completed work is reviewed for technical accuracy and compliance with established procedures. Technician Objectives: The Veterinary Assistant (no credentials) assists the doctors to the fullest possible extent, to help improve the quality of care given to the patients, and to aid the doctors in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work. The Veterinary Technician/Assistant assists in multiple procedures providing care for animals including physical examinations, dental procedures, surgeries, immunizations, euthanasia and client education, marketing and inventory maintenance. This position requires a working knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs, common diseases; their symptoms, means of transmission, treatment and prevention, and other basic preventative health care recommendations. Our primary focus is Small Animal Preventative Medicine but we do see a high volume of Internal Medicine cases. More about the Role The Veterinary Assistant assists the veterinarians and technicians with patient care and treatment, monitors hospitalized pets, maintains inventory, prepares prescriptions, performs routine in-house laboratory work, educates clients regarding veterinary care and procedures, and assists with surgical procedures. Please note, candidates must have experience assisting in surgery. Essential Responsibilities Assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery and other tasks as needed. Assist veterinarians in outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs, and weights, as well as providing client education. Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vital signs of the patient during surgery. Obtain blood, stool, and other samples; perform in-hospital laboratory testing and prepare specimens for outside laboratories. Take, develop, and maintain radiographs following proper safety procedures. Provide basic animal handling and restrain animals during exams. Administer and monitor medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments at the discretion of the veterinarian. Clean and straighten exam rooms, treatment, and lab areas; restock exam rooms with supplies. Assist other team members to keep the public areas of the practice clean; clean and maintain all medical equipment. Demonstrate warmth, courtesy and professionalism in all interactions with clients; exercise compassion and care in all interactions with patients. Communicate with veterinarians and practice team members including client discussions, patient plans, client concerns, etc. Any other duties as assigned.
