Veterans of Foreign Wars company history timeline

1913

These three veterans' organizations grew up side by side, increasing in scope and membership until August 1913, when at an encampment held at Denver, they merged their interests and identities in a national organization now known as the VFW.

1914

In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed these two organizations and merged in 1914, creating the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

1922

Beginning in 1922, it has sold a paper flower called the "Buddy Poppy," to raise funds for national service programs and relief for needy veterans and their families.

1925

In 1925, the organization established a National Home for Veterans' Orphans.

1931

One of its achievements was a lobbying campaign that in 1931 led Congress to officially designate "The Star-Spangled Banner" as America's national anthem.

1933

The VFW opposed the (President Franklin) Roosevelt administration's cuts in veterans' benefits in the Economy Act of 1933.

1936

The VFW was chartered by Congress in 1936.

1944

The veterans’ lobby groups continued to campaign for their rights, and in 1944 they achieved what many consider to be their greatest triumph – the G.I. Bill.

1962

2000

The proportion of African Americans steadily grew, reaching nearly one-third of Kansas City’s residents by 2000.

2003

In February 2003 the VFW issued a statement that charged the administration of President george w. bush with seriously under-funding the healthcare needs of the nation's veterans.

In 2003 the VFW, with its Ladies Auxiliary, had about 2.7 million members in approximately 9,500 posts worldwide.

2004

As of 2004, the organization had more than 1.9 million members.
