The Shelter Veterinarian provides examinations, veterinary care, monitoring and surgery services for shelter animals. The position additionally serves as backup to the Supervising Veterinarian (managing staff, shelter medicine efforts, surgery program and disease control protocols) in her/his absence. The schedule for the position is generally 5 days a week and includes a weekend day, evenings and on-call requirements. Emergency hours may be implemented during emergency situations.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Shelter Medicine, Surgeries
• Performs spay/neuter, dental surgeries, and other surgeries as required, on shelter and a limited number of owned animals.
• Provides physical examinations, care, and monitoring for domestic animals in the care of the Organization, in compliance with basic standards of care and shelter protocols. Participates in scheduled medical rounds.
• Completes, maintains and oversees accurate and complete daily medical treatment records (paper and electronic).
• When working, provides direct supervision to clinic technicians and assistants, foster and transfer coordinators, and volunteers to ensure compliance with medical protocols and treatments, disease control standards, safety and personnel policies and procedures.
• Acts as liaison with other veterinarians/veterinary clinics regarding the treatment of injured/ill stray animals, shelter animals or animals adopted from the Organization.
• Researches treatment options for injured/ill shelter animals and makes treatment or euthanasia recommendations.
• Works collaboratively with Shelter Manager and others on census management and animal routing issues including making euthanasia decisions. This decision making process will include approving the euthanasia list as needed.
• Participates in rounds and assists Shelter management personnel with veterinary medical cases in shelter and other necessary locations.
• Supervises and educates applicable students participating in rotations at the Shelter.
Administration, Policies/Procedures
• Assists with the development of standard operating procedures and protocols for veterinary treatment and disease control.
• Conducts/assists with staff and/or volunteer training related to veterinary care, disease control/animal health issues as required.

Qualifications
Job Qualifications:
Education/Experience: Must be currently licensed in the State of Colorado to practice veterinary medicine (or obtain CO license soon after hiring) and maintain certification. Must provide proof of, and maintain, Professional Liability Insurance. Proven experience in the field of veterinary medicine, with high quality/high volume surgical sterilization and Shelter experience preferred. Must be at least 21 years of age (required for insurance purposes). Available to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays as required. Supervisory experience preferred. Field conditions may be encountered. Potential for bites and scratches while handling animals. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds without assistance and more with assistance; potential for standing on feet for 8 to 10 hours a day; animal handling and restraint in a veterinary setting; driving a motor vehicle; kneeling; squatting; walking dogs on leash; performing physical examinations on animals; handling syringes and needles; potential exposure to hay and dust; potential exposure to deceased animals; audibly listening and verbally communicating. Planning and Problem Solving:

Our veterinarians and staff understand the special role clients' pets play in their families.
Our Veterinary Technicians are responsible for performing basic medical, diagnostic, and laboratory procedures under the direction of a licensed veterinarian.
This is a full-time position; $25.00 - $30.00 per hour
Essential Job Duties:
Prepare exam rooms and assist in appointments with doctors.
Take history from client. Perform physical assessments and record observations legibly in medical record.
Educate clients on preventative healthcare recommendations and provide follow up.
Communicate any patient or client concerns to appropriate personnel.
Perform venipuncture to collect blood samples, perform in house laboratory tests, and prepare all forms to be sent to outside labs, call owner with results as requested by veterinarian.
Provide and monitor all nursing care as requested by veterinarian for patients admitted to hospital, including medications (all routes) and monitoring.
Admit and discharge patients to hospital by following all admission and discharge protocols. Educate clients on admit/discharge.
Clean and restock exam rooms, treatment areas, hospital wards and other areas as requested.
Must have proficient knowledge of practice software for dispensing veterinarian approved medication, patient food, printing treatment sheets, discharge instructions, cage card labels, x ray and lab labels, recording communication with client and doctors, and others as directed by veterinarian.
Must have clear understanding and enforcement of OSHA regulations and hospital safety standards.
Perform diagnostic imaging as requested by veterinarian.
Perform tech appointments, such as pedicures, ear cleaning, anal gland expression, routine lab work, subcutaneous fluids, etc. as deemed appropriate by practice
Assist doctors in medical and diagnostic procedures.
Place IV catheters and begin fluid therapy when required by veterinarian.
Assist in induction and maintenance of general anesthesia with doctor present.
Assist in operating room, recovery, and post op-nursing care as requested by veterinarian.
Perform client callbacks and updates as requested.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills and Experience:
Must be certified veterinary technician in the state of Colorado
At least 3 years of clinical veterinary hospital experience required.
Excellent listening and communication skills.
Strong work ethic and positive attitude.
Must be flexible and able to adapt to new situations.
Ability to multitask.
Ability to act as a team player.
Basic veterinary medical terminology required.
