Responsibilities
* Schedules technician assignments based on building, species, research support requirements, and staff expertise. Ensures work, including maintenance of medical records, is conducted to the current standard of practice, in accordance with veterinary orders, and in compliance with regulatory requirements and accreditation guidelines.
* Trains direct reports to ensure core competencies and continued development. Continued development will include the development of skills necessary to support research at Columbia and progress in the AALAS certification program. Trains research personnel, both directly and indirectly through direct reports, on the safe handling and manipulation of research animals, on anesthetic and surgical techniques, and on other aspects of the care and use of research animals as directed.
* Maintains facilities within the area of responsibility, veterinary medicine, and research-related equipment, and supplies and stock. Verify that the front desk and the reception area are neat and clean at all times.

Education and Work Experience:
Must have graduated from an accredited school of veterinary science technology (2 or 4 year program) or the equivalent as determined by the New York State Education Department
Minimum five years experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician in small animal medicine and surgery; experience in shelter medicine and/or high volume spay/neuter surgery strongly preferred
Minimum two years people management experience

Medical Care Assist veterinarians in examinations, surgeries, and medical procedures
Administer medications, vaccinations, and treatments as prescribed
Perform diagnostic tests (e.g., blood work, x-rays) and prepare samples for laboratory analysis
Monitor the health and behavior of animals, reporting any changes or concerns to the Veterinarian
Change animal bandages, bedding, and kennel materials
Surgical Assistance - Prepare animals and surgical equipment for procedures.

We also have in-house chemistry, infusion pumps, pulse oximetry and blood pressure monitors, Hot Dog warming pads, in-house culture, computers in each exam room, etc. We practice quality medicine with an emphasis on client communication, geriatric medicine, appropriate dental procedures and pain management. We also work synergistically with the area's comprehensive specialty and emergency practice.
