Responsibilities
Clinical & Procedural Support
Assists with preparing and participating in procedures, compounding medications, performing treatments at the direction of the veterinary staff, restraining animals, performing diagnostic radiographs, cleaning up after procedures and preparing and sterilizing surgical packs.
Performs laboratory work on hospital and research samples, including but not limited to fecal analysis, urinalysis, hematology, chemistries, and microbiology, and prepares samples for shipment.
Responsible for maintaining records and entering data into the ZIMS system.
Clinic & Inventory Management
Assists in clinic management including scheduling equipment maintenance (hoods, x-ray equipment, anesthesia equipment) and renewing all vendor licenses and clinic licenses (radiology, pharmacy, etc.).
Assists in drug inventory which includes monthly expired drug checks and maintains inventory to USDA/AZA standards. Logs in controlled drugs as per protocol and regulation. Orders and negotiates prices on drugs and equipment.
Assist in maintaining fecal and annual exam schedules.
Assists in maintaining sample logs for freezers, slides, fecals and bloodwork.
Operational Support & Training
Drives to other locations as needed to obtain supplies and equipment and deliver samples.
Assists in training new staff, veterinary technician students, and volunteers as needed
Maintains licensure through continuing education.
Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization and avidly supports the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks.
Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Certification
A minimum of 1 years' experience as a veterinary technician in a zoological institution and a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Wildlife Conservation, Biology, Ecology, or a closely related field is preferred.
Degree in Applied Science in Veterinary Technology and graduation from an accredited Veterinary Technology Program or equivalent combination of training/experience required.
Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) certification by the Ohio Veterinary Medical Board within 6 months of hire required
Professional Skills
Ability to be a team player with excellent customer service skills required.
Strong organizational skills preferred with strong computer knowledge and skills.
Independent decision making/problem solving ability.
Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays required.
Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing is required.
Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner without direct supervision is required.
Workplace Requirements
Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding guest service standards required.
