    The Animal Research and Care Division (ACRD) ensures the well-being of animals used in research, teaching, and production at Virginia Tech. As a division of the Office of Research and Innovation, the Senior Research Veterinarian will serve as an ARCD team member in providing guidance and support university-wide in the execution of research and teaching engagement involving animal resources. Specifically, the Senior Research Veterinarian will be responsible for: • Providing clinical veterinary medical and surgical care and research support for a variety of laboratory animal species maintained across ARCD managed facilities and other locations in compliance with applicable federal regulations (e.g., AWA and AWRs), PHS Policy, professional standards (e.g. the Guide, the Ag Guide), and institutional and ACRD policies, procedures, and practices • Providing oversight, guidance, and direction of the humane care and use of animals used in research and teaching activities in non-ACRD managed facilities or program included but not limited to the College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM), the College of Agriculture, Agriculture Research and Extension Centers (ARECs), and investigator managed areas across a variety of disciplines • Assisting the facility supervisor with operating and maintaining the animal facility in compliance with applicable regulations, professional standards, and institutional and ARCD policies, procedures, and practices • Overseeing, directing and responsibility for a defined component of the veterinary care program Position requires participation in the veterinary on-call rotation. Position is expected to work on-site in Blacksburg, Virginia and may travel among the Blacksburg and Roanoke locations. This position supports the teaching mission of the DVM program by providing preclinical instruction, patient care, support and technical assistance for small animal labs in a variety of courses offered in the veterinary curriculum. The successful candidate will join a team of faculty and technicians that provides instruction, especially laboratory instruction, in the following areas: clinical skills, anesthesia, surgery (including pre-surgery evaluation and surgery discharge/client communication), dentistry, physical examinations, and others as determined by the Department Head. In addition to the instructional duties, this position will be responsible for serving as the primary veterinarian for the canine/feline teaching groups, which includes being a first-line contact for the medical needs of the patients on the evenings when they are housed in the College. This position will work collaboratively with the Animal Instructor Program (AIP) chair, enrolling animals in from the community for teaching purposes as well as being a point of contact for clients regarding the health of their pet(s) while participating in our programs and other inquiries about the programs. Combined with the efforts of the other AIP members and the ACE staff, this position will help maintain and grow the AIP program. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of the AIP chair to effectively recruit applicants, organize vaccine clinics and complete the tasks to bring in appropriately vaccinated animals for the teaching labs. Additional duties include ensuring there is strict adherence to IACUC protocols during labs and assisting in protocol updates as necessary; assisting in production of educational videos for technical procedures; assisting in the development of animal handling experiences; participating in Objective Structured Clinical Exams; and provide input to the course leaders as to relevant mechanisms to improve the instruction and development of DVM students. This position will be the point of contact with the shelter medicine and surgery clerkship program, and will cover their clinical duties (running the clerkship and teaching the students) on predetermined occasions. The successful candidate will be expected to work in cooperation with other faculty to provide a positive learning experience and serve as a role model for DVM students, ensuring the professional activities provided are of the highest ethical and professional standards. SIRC is a critical unit within the Office for Research and Innovation (ORI). ORI supports university-wide strategic initiatives and operational functions of Virginia Tech's $530+ million research enterprise and associated technology commercialization activities, which span nine academic colleges, eight university research institutes, and three affiliated corporations. With more than 600 new IACUC submissions each year, the ACUP Sr Administrative Specialist holds a key position in support of current research excellence and future growth. The (Senior) ACUP Administrative Specialist will join a dedicated team of ACUP professionals and provide support to the University's stakeholders, members of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (the IACUC is comprised of peers, veterinarians, non-scientists, and a community member who make final determinations concerning regulatory and ethical compliance of protocols submitted for review), and the ACUP team.
