Job Description
Job Title: Animal Care Specialist
Department: Animal Care
Reports to: Curator
Employment Type: Non-exempt; Full Time
This position is responsible for performing skilled and technical work in support of the zoo's mission as an accredited institution. Duties include ensuring the health and well-being of the animal collection in accordance with USDA and AZA standards, assisting with the presentation of animals for educational and recreational purposes, and supporting research initiatives focused on the conservation and propagation of endangered species. The role involves both manual and specialized tasks related to daily animal husbandry, as well as the maintenance of exhibits and surrounding grounds.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Clean and maintain animal habitats using appropriate tools and cleaning agents, ensuring the health and safety of the animals and compliance with Animal Welfare Act standards
Evaluate animal needs daily, considering weather, temperature, general health, species-specific requirements, and housing conditions
Prepare and deliver animal diets according to specifications provided by the Zoo Veterinarian or Curator
Monitor animal health through daily visual observation, behavior assessment, and analysis of fecal or blood samples as directed
Maintain accurate records of animal care and behavior using ZIMS or other designated software
Assist with the safe capture, restraint, and handling of animals for veterinary care or relocation, using proper techniques and equipment
Administer prescribed medications under the direction of the Zoo Veterinarian or Curator
Communicate effectively with zoo staff and supervisors both verbally and in writing; complete daily reports and documentation for assigned animals and areas
Maintain exhibit aesthetics, including care for exhibit plants and surrounding grounds
Perform manual labor such as lifting feed bags, moving meat boxes, and clearing debris from exhibits and grounds
Respond professionally to guest inquiries regarding zoo operations or animal care
Support zoo educational and promotional programs as needed
Exercise sound judgment in animal care decisions, especially in the absence of a direct supervisor
Participate in regular meetings with management to review and align departmental goals and priorities
Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean, hazard-free work environment
Stay informed on industry best practices by reviewing professional resources and staying current on trends and tools
Collaborate with team members to support the overall success of animal care and zoo operations

Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Certifications and/or Licenses:
Associate's degree in biological or life sciences or related field, appropriate experience in an accredited Zoological Institution may be substituted for degree
A valid driver's license
Experience/Knowledge/Skills:
3 years of related work experience, specifically in animal care in an accredited zoological institution or museum
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Understanding of and strong commitment to the Zoo's Mission
Basic knowledge of characteristics, diets, habits, and well-being of wild and domestic animals
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and database software
Discretion and professionalism in handling confidential information
Must be results oriented professional with excellent verbal/written communication skills using diplomacy and discretion as well as the ability to communicate effectively
Ability to multi-task, work independently and/or within a team, pays attention to detail and meet deadlines

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to use their hands to handle, feel, or operate objects and tools, and to reach with hands and arms. The role also requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, talking, and hearing, as well as occasional stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
The employee is frequently required to work in close proximity to zoo animals and their habitats, including handling animals and performing tasks within animal enclosures.
The employee must occasionally lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds. Visual requirements include the ability to see close-up and at a distance, distinguish colors, use peripheral vision, perceive depth, and adjust focus.

The work environment described here reflects the conditions typically encountered while performing the essential functions of this role.
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to an outdoor environment and large and small animals. Must be able to work weekends and holidays as needed. The ability to share workspace and dress in proper attire such as required PPE gear (glasses, gloves, and uniforms). The employee may be exposed to inclement weather.
As the zoo operates year-round, 362 days a year, availability to work special events, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, is required.
