About the Role:
Responsible for the design, synthesis, purification, and characterization of intermediates and bioactive compounds through the use of techniques such as column chromatography (e.g., high performance liquid chromatography, automated normal phase purification), nuclear magnetic resonance and parallel or combinatorial synthesis. Prepares technical reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses. Responsible for the communication and presentation of results to the project team in order to facilitate effective decision making.

Plays key role in the rapid optimization of lead molecules utilizing modern technology available to medicinal chemists such as automated synthesis and purification
Participates in a multidisciplinary team committed to the continuous improvement of the lead optimization process as well as the expeditious identification of development compounds
Designs, plans and conducts synthesis of intermediates and analog libraries as well communicates results to the project or program team
Other duties as assigned

Requirements:
BS/BA degree and 2+ years of relevant experience, including familiarity utilizing any or all of the following: parallel synthesis, lab automation, and purification in the optimization of lead compounds is preferred ORMS/MA degree in Synthetic Organic Chemistry preferred and some similar experience noted above ORPhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry or related field preferred and some related postdoctoral experience required; 2+ years postdoctoral experience preferred Working knowledge of any or all of the following: organic synthesis, parallel synthesis, medicinal chemistry, lab automation, and purification in the optimization of lead compounds is preferred Recognizes fundamental anomalies in data points and identifies issues in experiments / processes
Begins to understand how to think outside of the technical process and consider the impact decisions will have on the broader scientific goals
Strong knowledge of scientific discipline
Good knowledge of scientific principles, methods and techniques
Good knowledge and demonstrated ability working with a variety of laboratory equipment/tools
Strong computer skills

Frontier Medicines is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the position of Scientist I/II Medicinal Chemistry, to join our medicinal chemistry team in the South San Francisco office. These individuals will play a key role tackling challenging disease targets applying a variety of strategies including covalent fragment based drug discovery and the application of a novel protein degrader technology. The team is focused on the discovery of new medicines to treat cancers and other serious disorders. The successful candidate will drive the design and synthesis of lead compounds, contribute to the management of external chemistry activities, and bring practical leading-edge methods and synthetic tactics to Frontier Medicines discovery programs.
Requirements

Apply organic and medicinal chemistry skills in the design and synthesis of novel small molecules as potential drug candidates.

Provide valuable laboratory contributions that impact discovery project(s) through route-scouting activities leading to the efficient synthesis of high-priority target molecules and/or solving critical synthetic challenges.

Closely follow emerging results of biological testing, ADME characterization, and other lead profiling assays; proactively propose new strategies and new target molecules to improve key drug attributes.

Proactively help manage external chemistry efforts, providing synthetic expertise in a collaborative fashion.

Regularly summarize results and provide progress updates to the chemistry and cross-functional project teams.

Contribute to the writing of patent applications, study reports, and scientific publications.

What are we looking for?

Ph.D. in organic chemistry; or MS with 5+ years of medicinal chemistry experience in the pharmaceutical industry.

Strong background in complex molecule synthesis and/or methods development experience with a wide range of techniques related to multi-step synthesis, purification, and spectroscopic analysis.

Practical understanding of physicochemical properties toward improved lead-like matter.

Proven track record of achievements through conceptual thinking and translation to results, as demonstrated by publications, presentations, patent applications and/or industry success.

Ability to independently identify and address complex problems in synthetic chemistry.

Self-motivated and enthusiastic; fast learner who can identify the core project challenges and expeditiously change course as required in a fast-paced organization.
