Key Responsibilities
Comprehensive patient exams and medical work-ups

Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Primate Resources, this position serves as a Veterinary Pathologist. The position conducts diagnostic and investigative the pathology of nonhuman primates (NHPs) housed at the WaNPRC.
**POSITION COMPLEXITIES:**
Essential skills include the ability to perform diagnostic and research necropsies, interpret observations of gross and microscopic tissues, apply and interpret immunohistochemistry and molecular biological techniques, interpret clinical pathology results as applied to spontaneous disease occurrences, and support for ongoing research programs. Good teaching skills are required as this position is expected to train relevant staff on pertinent concepts and skills.
**POSITION DIMENSIONS AND IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSITY:**
Pathology is an integral part of maintaining and improving animal research, medicine and colony health. The primary objective of improving both human and nonhuman primate health depends on sound diagnostic interpretations and discovery of disease pathogenesis and novel therapeutics. This position will support multiple investigators on a variety of research grants and provide instruction to current animal care staff and rotating resident and students in the Washington National Primate Research Center and Department of Comparative Medicine, a part of the University of Washington Medical Center.
**POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:**
**Routine Pathology (40%)**
- Conduct diagnostic and investigative pathology of nonhuman primate material.
- Provide routine and/or specific veterinary pathology services for WaNPRC nonhuman primates, including evening, weekend and holidays.
- Study pathology material specific to virology, immunology, and infectious disease studies.
**Tissue Distribution Program (20%)**
- Direct the program
- Identify and assign animals to the project using recommendations from clinical, research and PWB groups and the reviewing animal histories.
- Create monthly schedules, process orders and tissue collection, sample distribution and billing.
- Train and oversee necropsy staff in sterile tissue collections, detailed dissections and numerous tissue preparations as requested.
- Develop techniques with researchers for performance of their research projects.
- Train colony and research staff in experimental tissue collections and minor procedures such as biopsies, suturing, blood draws, bone marrow aspirations, catheter placement etc.
**Research Services (20%)**
- Contribute to the development and characterization of animal models of human diseases.
- Develop collaborative research projects, and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.
- Periodically submit grant proposals as a PI or collaborator
- Provide advice and assistance to UW faculty, staff, affiliates, and collaborative research personnel regarding appropriate samples, analyses, and procedures for pathology material.
- Comply with WaNPRC, UW, State, Federal, and International Animal Welfare regulations and Policies that involve WaNPRC operations.
- Participation in IACUC committee as deemed necessary
**Administrative and Supervisory Roles (10%)**
- Assist the other senior pathologist in oversight of the Special Techniques Histology Lab.
- Supervise the WaNPRC Necropsy Technician.
- Maintain Pathology schedules and pricing.
- Assist in composition of applicable grants
- Assist in maintenance of budgets.
- Perform the duties required of Essential Personnel members in the event of an emergency.
- Stay current on all required training.
- Other duties as assigned.
**Teaching Duties (10%)**
- Instruction of Post-DVM residents and veterinary students in the Department of Comparative Medicine in diagnostic and research pathology.
- Preparation of residents and faculty for the American College of Veterinary Pathology Board Certification exam.
- Instruction of Clinical Veterinarians of the WaNPRC in diagnostic histopathology and pertinent clinicopathology.
- Preparation of Clinical Veterinarians of the WaNPRC and Post-DVM residents in Department of Comparative Medicine for the pathology/diagnostic portion of the American College of Laboratory Animal Veterinarians Board Certification exam.
- Seminars and other forums of education/training of the WaNPRC personnel in pathology and medicine.
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:**
- Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from a College of Veterinary Medicine that is accredited by the American Veterinary Association or has a certificate issued by the American Veterinary Association's Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates.
- Certification by the ACVP in anatomic pathology.
- Five (5) years of minimum experience.
- Equivalent experience cannot substitute for degree requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English in both written and oral formats.
- Demonstrated capacity to collaborate well with a diverse staff and research investigators.
- Knowledge of animal welfare regulations and bio-safety principles.
- Proficient in use of Microsoft Office suite of software.
**DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:**
- Advanced academic degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in comparative medicine, pathology, or other related academic discipline.
- Proven record of publication of abstracts and/or articles and presentation of scientific activities at professional meetings and in scientific journals.
- Supervisory experience.
**WORKING ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:**
The position allows remote work, such as from home, as deemed feasible and necessary.
This position may be required to work with and take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents. Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing. Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies/procedures, and staying current on all required training. Bloodborne pathogen training and compliance with all WaNPRC and UW security policies is also mandatory. This position involves handling nonhuman primates and human pathogenic organisms. The ability to work in an ABSL-3 containment facility may be required.
**OTHER INFORMATION:**
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of health assessment at the UW's Employee Health Clinic. The health assessment may include but is not limited to tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, serum banking, immunizations such as tetanus and vaccinia, physical exam and/or review of work health history, x-rays, and/or assessment to wear positive or negative respiratory protective equipment. These health assessments will be repeated periodically during work assignment.

• Serves as the study pathologist for nonclinical studies conducted in compliance with applicable FDA and other national and international regulatory agency standards.

Richard Beckett Animal Science Center as the veterinarian of record. Additionally, they will teach courses and/or labs relevant to their training and experience to support the Animal Science program. Applicants must have excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrate ability to utilize digital technologies for course design and delivery. Applicants should have a strong desire and passion for advising and mentorship and will be responsible for academic advising within the program and serve as a coordinator and mentor for our newly established Early Veterinary Mentoring Program, for eligible Pre-Veterinary students.

Title: Pathologist/Senior Pathologist Full-time Who we are and what we do: Frontage Laboratories Inc. is an award winning, full-service, Contract Research Organization (CRO) operating over 25 state-of-the-art laboratories across the US, Canada, Europe, and China. Our core competencies include drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics/ pharmacodynamics (PK/PD), safety and toxicology, bioanalytical services, chemistry and manufacturing controls for drug development, and core laboratory services for clinical trials. Our Safety & Toxicology facilities are located in the US (Ohio and Illinois), Canada (Toronto) and China (Suzhou) and are growing rapidly. Our Concord, OH and Chicago, IL sites provide toxicology testing and research laboratory services and specialized pre-clinical studies in support of pharmaceutical and biotechnology products.
Position Summary
We are currently looking for a Senior Pathologist/Pathologist to be located on-site at our Concord, OH toxicology facility. Pathologists at Frontage Laboratories serve as technical experts and consultants in pathology and related fields, working in a collaborative environment on projects throughout the discovery and development continuum and have a passion for science and quality. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of toxicological pathology across multiple laboratory species. Experience in regulatory toxicology/pathology and familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and drug development is desirable.
Roles & Responsibilities
* Attend necropsies as requested and be available for expert oversight of necropsies as needed.
* Interpret and report pathology findings in exploratory and regulatory studies including correlating microscopic findings to macroscopic observations, organ weight changes, and clinical pathology data.
* Maintain accurate records of all procedures according to FDA GLP regulations and applicable SOPs.
* Conduct pathology peer reviews, depending on experience.
* Maintain current knowledge of pathology literature, best practices, and industry directions.
* Function as a key member of the pathology team interacting daily with members located in Chicago or off-site locations.
* Provide pathology expertise for regulatory submissions and regulatory responses.
* Support business development initiatives through client interactions and expert guidance.
* Support necropsy either through supervision or training.
* Demonstrate scientific leadership through participation in professional organizations, presentations, and publications.
* Work closely and collaboratively with other Pathologists and Toxicology Study Directors.
* Perform additional duties and tasks assigned by Management.
Qualifications/Requirements:
* DVM and Diplomate of ACVP (anatomic pathology) or equivalent certification.
* Preferably (3+ years) experience in interpreting and reporting pathology findings in a CRO, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology setting; however, qualified candidates with other relevant experience are encouraged to apply.
* Experience in immuno- and/or neuropath desirable, with potential growth to set up in-house specialty service offerings, including IHC.
* Strong, effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to organize and clearly present complex data and concepts.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple projects, demonstrate consistent productivity, and meet project timelines.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
