Position Overview
The licensed veterinary technician is the veterinarian's primary medical support. They begin the examination procedure and continue to assist the doctor throughout the examination, diagnosis and treatment phases. They aid the veterinarians in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail. They have a very significant role in communicating with and educating clients about their pets.
Qualifications/Requirements

· High school diploma or equivalent
· Veterinary Technician License (LVT) required.
· Previous On-The-Job Training desirable when not a LVT.
Experience Requirements
· Two years experience as veterinary technician or assistant preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities
Restrain/hold animals of several species for examination and treatments
Assist in treatment of patients in concert with a doctor
Get weights on all patients prior to examination
Use our radiology software for medical records and submission of studies for review
Take digital photos of procedures/relevant lesions and save to patients' medical records
Run in-house laboratory specimens and record results in patient medical records
Prepare laboratory forms/specimens for out-of-office laboratories (Antech and others)
Import laboratory and radiographic data into patient medical records
Manage and oversee medical treatments (including collecting laboratory samples, administering SQ fluids, placing IV and urinary catheters, expressing anal sac, etc.)
Administer and oversee anesthesia, surgical and dental treatments under the direction of the Veterinarian
Take high quality digital radiographs
Complete all relevant medical records entries for patients
Ensure that all patients are comfortable, fed, watered and clean
Bathe animals as necessary (both therapeutic and general)
Keep accurately and timely logs for controlled drugs
Setup medications/fill prescriptions when needed
Help monitor inventory, rotation and expiration dates and report needs as requested
Assist in stocking exam rooms/treatment/surgery/radiology rooms as necessary
Assist in ordering of food/supplies/medications as requested
Assist in maintenance of areas both inside and outside of hospital (floors, walks, parking, runs, etc.)

Safety & Technical Skills: Follow DEA, OSHA, and hospital safety guidelines; administer SQ, IM, and IV injections; perform laboratory tests, radiographs, and electrocardiograms; place IV catheters; perform emergency treatments such as bleeding control and external cardiac massage.

Required: Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) in the state of New York.

Our dedicated team of more than 45 sheltering, medical, and animal behavior professionals work closely with the ASPCA Animal Hospital, Forensics, Legal Advocacy and Investigations, Behavioral Sciences, Shelter Medicine Services, Community Engagement, Placement, and the Adoption Center teams to ensure coordinated response and operations, and holistic, balanced, high quality care for the animals we serve.
The Licensed Veterinary Technician at the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center (ARC) is responsible for a broad range of medical and administrative tasks in ARC that serves animals admitted through the NYPD Partnership program. The LVT delivers compassionate nursing care and has a broad knowledge of animal science, medicine, and husbandry, including a basic knowledge of pharmacology, shelter medicine, behavior, and proficient mathematical skills.
One of the most critical functions of this role is serving as a member of a team of medical, behavior and sheltering operations personnel, all dedicated to working together to provide holistic care for victims of cruelty and neglect.
The schedule is Sundays-Wednesdays from 9a-7p.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Nursing and Shelter Population Care (50%)
Possess in depth knowledge and understanding of veterinary medical concepts
Care for up to 40 cats and dogs per day.
Provide compassionate and quality patient care at all times utilizing Fear Free/Low Stress handling,
Proficiency in various technical nursing skills, including, but not limited to, venipuncture, catheter placement, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, diagnostic imaging, critical care, pharmacology, and dentistry.
Possess critical thinking and multi-tasking skills
Ability to prioritize and re-prioritize based on hospital, ARC and new case needs
Be familiar with infectious diseases, including their prevention and steps to reduce or eliminate transmission
Administer injections, animal vaccinations, medications, treatments, and supportive care measures as directed by departmental Standard Operating Procedures and attending Veterinarian.
Perform venipuncture, run diagnostic tests, and administer fluids as needed.
Maintain and compile weekly order of medical supplies inventory, including emergency drugs.
Ensure that supplies are in-date.
Ensure that all structures and equipment are functional. When equipment is not working properly report to the appropriate team or department for timely repair.
Maintain all necessary logs, inventory, DTM plates and patient records and checklists.
Create and manage accurate treatment sheets, surgery and procedure requests and medication orders
Stay current in knowledge of emergency drugs and protocols.
Accurately communicate information about an animal's condition to the direct care team.
Support the Medical Supervisor and other veterinarians in the planning and performance of humane euthanasia.
