Under the supervision of the Veterinary Services Supervisor, provides medical care for shelter animals, ensuring humane treatment and thorough assessments of adoption potential. Key responsibilities include assisting the Shelter Veterinarian with medical procedures, surgeries, and post-operative care, as well as securing controlled substances, performing lab work, and managing related clerical tasks. This role requires attention to detail, compassion, and knowledge of veterinary care to support the health and well-being of animals within the shelter.

Enforces, controls, and maintains security of controlled substances in accordance with rules, regulations, and federal laws.
Performs laboratory tasks such as fecal analysis, bloodwork, urinalysis, cytology.
Assists in responding to questions from citizens regarding spay/neutering or other medical questions.
Responsible for notifying owners of impounded animals of any medical concerns and/or scheduled surgeries.
Examines, evaluates, and vaccinates shelter animals. Responsible for daily inspections of kennel population for additional illness or injury. Reports findings to the veterinarian. Assist with animal assessment rounds, scoring animals for adoptability and pathway planning.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Training and Experience
High school diploma, GED or equivalent and completion of college level classes leading to certification as a Certified Veterinary Technician.
Minimum of three (3) years' experience working as an uncertified Veterinary Technician for a Licensed Veterinarian and/or (2) years working as a certified Veterinary Technician for a Licensed Veterinarian
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver License and be insurable by current insurance carrier.
State of Florida euthanasia certification, or equivalent credentials, recognized by the Florida Animal Control Association.

Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed patient records using a paperless medical record system, ensuring all procedures, vaccinations, and notes are documented for proper billing.
Pharmacy Assistance: Assist with dispensing medications as directed by the veterinarian, prepare prescription labels, and appropriately package medication.
Safety & Technical Skills: Follow DEA, OSHA, and hospital safety guidelines; administer SQ, IM, and IV injections; perform laboratory tests, radiographs, and electrocardiograms; place IV catheters; perform emergency treatments such as bleeding control and external cardiac massage.

Responsibilities
Works closely with our board certified criticalists to provide excellent care of our patients and guests.
Candidate must have the veterinary nurse skills as listed below:
Have nursing skills that include proper animal restraint, obtain vitals, anesthesia monitoring, intubation, catheter placement, phlebotomy, performing treatments, and administering medications
Able to monitor and care for patients using state of the art equipment and protocols
Have knowledge of anesthetic protocols used in ECC surgical procedures and ability to run anesthesia for these cases
Have knowledge of running in house lab machines, sending lab samples out and positioning and taking radiographs
Have knowledge of triage and the ability to discuss estimates for diagnostics, procedures, and/or treatments with the clients
Ability to document and maintain medical records
Have sound knowledge of medical terminology, common disease processes and medical emergencies
Cleaning, stocking and helping to maintain proper care of the hospital equipment
Ability to provide thoughtful and compassionate communication with pet owners and referring veterinarians
Knowledge and experience with CT scans/Dialysis/ventilators/TPE/ Central/PICC lines are a plus
