Serves as a strategic thought partner in the development and implementation of a professional development for wellness team members. Collaborates with animal care leadership to train and support caregiving staff in performing treatments and maintaining a standard level of care through specific task/skill training.
Advises and consults with the wellness leadership on difficult or complex cases, and participates in healthcare rounds, performs physical examinations, conducts testing, and assesses results as needed.
Enforces risk management strategy for animal care, including oversight of controlled substances and orders and management of prescriptions and medications onsite.
Partners with the research team to advise on the design and implementation of non-invasive, sanctuary-based research studies at Farm Sanctuary contributing to the body of research on the emotional, social, and cognitive lives of farm animals.
Serve as advisor to the Animal Sanctuary Welfare team on enrichment.
Represents Farm Sanctuary in DVM Meetings and to donors and members of the public, as necessary

Qualifications:
Active Veterinary State License (New York state)
Doctor of Veterinary degree, or equivalent, from an accredited university
Commitment to approaching care from a holistic animal welfare perspective and providing the highest quality of care to animal residents.
Proven skills in conventional medicine, diagnostics, and healthcare record keeping standards.
Varied veterinary experience welcome. Large animal and avian experience required (specifically: cattle, goat, sheep, pig). Willingness and ability to develop expertise working with all species in Farm Sanctuary's care (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, alpacas, llamas, donkeys, chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese) required.
Ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment while effectively managing multiple projects with creativity and flexibility.

Essential Physical Requirements:

Education, License & Cert:
Completion of Ophthalmic Scribe Certification (OSC) is required within the first 3 weeks and completion of American Academy of Ophthalmology Home Study Course in Ophthalmic Assisting is required within the first 6 months of employment for those candidates without certification.

Experience:

9. Attends required staff and educational meetings as requested.

1. Provides orientation and training of new employees and recognizes and utilizes opportunities to teach other staff members.
2. May travel to regional offices as needed.

Primary Job Purpose:
As the Attendant: Research Technician Support you will provide care for animals, the sanitation and maintenance of equipment of the facility, and you will learn to assist with routine basic study activities to provide assistance to our research team.
This position will routinely be standing, moving, and lifting for extended periods of time. Day to day activities include physical work such as sanitizing/decontaminating areas of cat and dog urine and excrement, as well as cleaning/sanitizing caging and accessory equipment (toys, feed/water bowls, enrichment items).
Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide basic animal care for study animals, including animals housed under barrier conditions, according to prescribed procedures and instructions, such as:
Feeding and watering animals.
Cleaning and sanitation of animal rooms, cages, and facilities.
Transferring animals, equipment, and supplies.
Assist with grooming, bathing, or exercising animals.

Being a Licensed Veterinary Technician is a plus but not necessary.
Physical Requirements:
The employee is required to communicate effectively by talking, listening, reading, and writing in a professional manner.
At all times, be sober and clear of influence of any substances including alcohol and legal recreational drugs, which may affect the ability of user, safety of animals and other staff members, and work quality in any manner.
Ability to maneuver 50 pounds regularly.

Salary and Benefits:
This position pays at an hourly rate of $16.00-$18.00 per hour determined by the candidates experience and qualifications.
As a full-time employee you will be eligible to participate in Clinvet's insurance offerings including, health, dental, vision, short and long-term disability, and life.
In your first year employed you will accrue up to 3 weeks of paid time off. After your first year the amount in which you accrue increases.
