Licensed Veterinary Technician - Surgery Department
Primary Responsibilities:
Manage and provide for the patient's needs in the surgery department.
Perform required treatments and record observations legibly in medical records.
Assist in patient restraint, test set up, nursing care and discharge of patients.
Performance of basic in-house laboratory tests, completion of forms for laboratory, filing lab reports and clean- up of laboratory area.
Communicate with doctors and technicians regarding patient status or concerns.
Assist doctors in appointments. Assist with bloodwork, restraint and physical exams.
Assist during surgery procedures (setting up, assisting doctors, monitoring, etc.)
Technical skills including but not limited to, IV catheter placement, urinary catheter placement, venipuncture, and safe restraint
Handle and administer controlled substances.
Administration and knowledge of analgesic and anesthetic therapy to include opiates, non-steroidal medication, and inhalation anesthesia. Exhibit monitoring capabilities.
Equipment care, including inspection and troubleshooting.
Follow established hospital policies and procedures when handling client concerns
Document legibly and keep accurate medical records in accordance to hospital policy.
All employees are required to participate in the on-call rotation as needed. Shifts are subject to revisions and changes at the discretion of the hospital.
All employees will be scheduled and expected to work rotating holiday shifts in the emergency and critical care department.
Clear understanding and enforcement of OSHA regulations and hospital safety standards.
Performs other job duties as assigned.
COMPENSATION:
This position has an initial hiring range of $28.00 to $35.00 per hour based on skillset and experience. We offer a competitive shift differential for team members working the hours of 6pm to 6am at $4.00 per hour on top of base pay along with competitive benefits, including continuing education, staff pet discounts, incentives for professional development, health insurance, and 401k. We also offer a weekend differential that is an additional $2/hr for any work between 12 a.m. Saturday to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday.
WORK HOURS:
This position is a full-time role with a guarantee of 30 hours per week. Actual working hours may vary based on the needs of the department, the availability of the doctors, or as directed by the hospital leadership team. Flexibility in scheduling is required to ensure departmental and patient care needs are met.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Completion of an AVMA-Accredited Veterinary Technician Program preferred.
Currently licensed or in the process of obtaining a Washington state LVT license
6 months of veterinary experience required. Surgery preferred.
Excellent communication skills. Strong work ethic and a positive attitude.
Must be flexible and able to adapt to new situations.
Ability to act as a team player.

General Veterinary Responsibilities:
Provide high quality veterinary care to animals under the care of the Humane Rescue Alliance, including animals in the shelter, on foster and in the community.
Communicate effectively with members of the medical team, other shelter staff and animal care givers including owners and foster carers.
Have a good understanding of shelter and community medicine and be able to provide high quality medical care to animals within the scope of service available.
Keep accurate clinical records.
Prescribe medications responsibly, including accurate recording of all controlled substances.
Provide training and mentorship to clinical support staff.
Work as a team and treat colleagues and external stakeholders with respect.
Represent the organization and the veterinary profession and be an advocate for animal welfare.
In the Shelter:
Perform spays, neuters, and a variety of medical/surgical procedures.
Provide medical care and diagnostics for shelter animals and those in foster care
Participate in medical rounds, case discussions, and care planning to ensure a smooth path from intake to adoption.
Implement and uphold protocols for animal care and infectious disease control.
Collaborate cross-departmentally to ensure optimal animal outcomes and reduced length of stay.
Participate in euthanasia decisions and humane euthanasia procedures when required.
In the Community:
Conduct wellness checks, low-cost spay/neuter, and vaccine clinics in our community medical center and at off-site events.
Support trap-neuter-return (TNR) efforts and neighborhood outreach initiatives.
Offer outpatient services including basic diagnostics, dentistry, and preventive care.
Participate in mobile/fieldwork, including house calls and pop-up clinics, as needed.
Help build and evolve innovative programs that address barriers to veterinary care.
About You: Skills & Qualifications
A degree in veterinary medicine from an accredited university.
License to practice veterinary medicine in Washington, DC (or eligibility to obtain a license).
Prior experience in shelter medicine, HQHVSN, or community care preferred but not essential.
Comfortable working independently at times with strong technician support.
Confidence to perform surgery and medical treatment in a fast-paced and changing environment.
Passion for helping animals and people with limited access to care.
Excellent communication skills, empathy, and a strong desire to serve both animals and people.
Organized, flexible, and solutions-oriented under pressure

The Humane Rescue Alliance seeks a Veterinary Technician to join a dynamic team of medical professionals to provide consistent medical care to animals in the nation's capital. This role offers a unique opportunity to support animals in need, deepen your understanding of shelter and community medicine, and develop your veterinary skills. The veterinary technician provides a wide range of medical care and guidance, from basic wellness and care information to surgical support for shelter animals and owned animals. Candidates should have a working knowledge of veterinary medicine, animal shelter procedures, and animal care and behavior.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Rotate between the medical center, surgery center, and community clinic.
Perform intake exams and begin treatments on patients following our protocols and standard operating procedures; administer vaccinations, parasiticides, and routine screenings on a variety of species.
Perform surgical support, including but not limited to surgery prep, anesthesia induction, intubation, monitoring, recovery, emergency intervention, as well as general cleaning and equipment management.
Assist with training new and existing veterinary support staff on daily operations, software systems, and technical skills.
Assist Veterinarians with patient appointments for illnesses, including obtaining patient histories, addressing client or foster parent concerns, performing indicated diagnostics, administering treatments, and reviewing discharge instructions.
Work with other departments to determine the best pathway of incoming animals i.e.; Adoption, Transfer, Medical Treatment, Spay/Neuter etc.
Assist in surgery, including but not limited to induction, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, and recovery.
Perform shelter rounds and monitor population health.
Update and maintain population management software, patient files, review care plans, and handle other administrative duties, as necessary.
Perform diagnostics and collect and prepare laboratory samples for analysis.
Calculate, administer, and record medications; complete controlled drug logs; fill prescriptions.
Perform and assist with euthanasia of shelter animals.
Maintain departmental procedures and protocols regarding humane care and treatment of animals, exam area cleanliness, and safety guidelines.
Always represent HRA in a professional and courteous manner. Provide quality service to the public, volunteers, and employees recognizing their individual contributions to the success of the organization.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Proficient technical skills, including but not limited to administering medications, phlebotomy, placing IV catheters, surgical support, analyzing blood, urine, fecal samples.
Knowledge and skill in restraint and handling techniques, general animal safety practices, and ability to recognize animal behavior patterns.
Previous Fear Free Certification or successful completion of Fear Free Shelter certification within 6 months of hire.
Knowledge of or ability to learn animal shelter procedures and protocols.
Successful completion of HRA Euthanasia Certification program within 6 months of hire.
Ability to routinely work evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Rotate between the medical center, surgery center, and community clinic.
Perform intake exams and begin treatments on patients following our protocols and standard operating procedures; administer vaccinations, parasiticides, and routine screenings on a variety of species.
Perform surgical support, including but not limited to surgery prep, anesthesia induction, intubation, monitoring, recovery, emergency intervention, as well as general cleaning and equipment management.
Assist with training new and existing veterinary support staff on daily operations, software systems, and technical skills.
Assist Veterinarians with patient appointments for illnesses, including obtaining patient histories, addressing client or foster parent concerns, performing indicated diagnostics, administering treatments, and reviewing discharge instructions.
Work with other departments to determine the best pathway of incoming animals i.e.; Adoption, Transfer, Medical Treatment, Spay/Neuter etc.
Assist in surgery, including but not limited to induction, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, and recovery.
Perform shelter rounds and monitor population health.
Update and maintain population management software, patient files, review care plans, and handle other administrative duties, as necessary.
Perform diagnostics and collect and prepare laboratory samples for analysis.
Calculate, administer, and record medications; complete controlled drug logs; fill prescriptions.
Perform and assist with euthanasia of shelter animals.
Maintain departmental procedures and protocols regarding humane care and treatment of animals, exam area cleanliness, and safety guidelines.
Always represent HRA in a professional and courteous manner. Provide quality service to the public, volunteers, and employees recognizing their individual contributions to the success of the organization.

Qualifications and Requirements:
Proficient technical skills, including but not limited to administering medications, phlebotomy, placing IV catheters, surgical support, analyzing blood, urine, fecal samples.
Knowledge and skill in restraint and handling techniques, general animal safety practices, and ability to recognize animal behavior patterns.
Previous Fear Free Certification or successful completion of Fear Free Shelter certification within 6 months of hire.
Knowledge of or ability to learn animal shelter procedures and protocols.
Successful completion of HRA Euthanasia Certification program within 6 months of hire.

Perform basic to intermediate nursing care tasks, patient monitoring, and treatments.
Use understanding of common diseases and conditions, physical assessment, and monitoring parameters to accurately triage incoming patients.
Administer subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous medications and understand potential adverse effects of medications.
Set-up, monitor, and administer intravenous fluid therapy including constant rate infusions and blood transfusion therapy.
Contribute to incoming outpatient care and ongoing inpatient care.
Participate in giving and receiving patient rounds to ensure continuity of care.
Be trained to properly perform all aspects of CPR as a RECOVER Certified Rescuer.
Collect samples and perform diagnostic tests including in-house and point-of-care tests and diagnostic imaging.
Perform nursing care tasks such as placing and/or maintaining urinary catheters, nasoenteral tubes, nasal oxygen tubes, chest and abdominal tubes.
Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot oxygen cages and other oxygen administration techniques.
Veterinary technicians additionally perform:
Administer, monitor, and maintain patients under general anesthesia with or without mechanical ventilation for patients with varied levels of risk.
Perform advanced vascular access techniques including jugular catheter placement, sampling line placement, central line placement, intraosseous catheterization, and arterial catheterization.
Perform advanced diagnostic techniques including ultrasonography and paracentesis,
Participate in formulating treatment, anesthetic, and nursing care plans.
Conduct treatments using clinical decision-making skills according to protocolized plans.
Aid in managing patient care workload to ensure the patients are receiving uncompromised care.
Coach and guide veterinary assistants and veterinary nurses to perform clinical tasks to maintain standards of care and encourage growth.
Collaborate and share knowledge with teammates to ensure optimal patient care.
Obtain additional training along guided growth pathways offering roles in addition to direct nursing care such as VTS certification, trainer role, coordination of care, community outreach, and leadership.
WHAT YOU NEED
High school diploma or equivalent
Credentialed as a veterinary technician (CVT, RVT, LVT, LVMT) in the location of the VEG practice.
Veterinary technician specialist (VTS) certification will receive additional considerations in practice role and compensation.
Basic computer skills to use practice management, electronic medical record, and collaboration software.
1+ years of experience in a veterinary technician role. Experience in emergency or specialty medicine preferred.
Excellent communication skills (written, verbal and electronic) with the team and with customers
Fine motor skills adequate for utilizing hospital equipment necessary daily such as syringes, electric clippers, computers, surgery instruments, monitors, diagnostic equipment, etc.
Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, work on the floor as well as ability to lift up to 25 kg on own and able to support up to 40 kg with assistance.
