Essential Job Functions:
Listed are the essential duties and responsibilities that are required of this position. This section includes the primary accountabilities or duties of the job. The incumbent must be able to perform all the following duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation:
* Provide excellent patient care by performing physical examinations, diagnosing and treating diseases, and providing preventive care according to patient signalment, lifestyle, and environment.
* Utilize a problem-based approach that includes developing a complete problem list for every patient examined, a complete list of differential diagnoses for each problem identified, a complete diagnostic plan, and appropriate treatments based on interpretation of diagnostic test results leading to confirmed or suspected diagnoses.
* Document all patient observations, findings of exams and diagnostics, treatments and medications, client interactions, and tentative and confirmed diagnoses in the medical record in a concise and detail fashion, according to practice convention.
* Perform routine and complex surgical procedures including (but not limited) spays/neuters, abdominal exploratory, and mass removals.
* Perform routine and complex dental procedures including full dental examination, evaluation of dental radiographs, as well as simple and complex extractions and oral surgical procedures.
* Develop treatment plans for patients undergoing day hospitalization based on complete problem-based assessment. Transition patients to overnight care as needed and communicate effectively with referral hospitals to ensure continuity of patient care.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
* Participate in rounds as incoming or exiting doctor at beginning and end of shifts.
* Disseminate knowledge throughout staff to improve the level of care and communication provided hospital partners, to both the patient and the client.
* Performs additional duties as assigned.
Nature of Supervision:
In all activities related to the care of individual patients, the Veterinarian will take direct supervision from the Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director. The Veterinarian has discretion related to decisions regarding patient care, however, it is imperative that the Veterinarian uphold the standards set forth in the Petco Veterinary SOPs. The Veterinarian should expect to receive direction and guidance based on electronic medical record review from the Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director regarding patient decisions and should accept such feedback as a means to elevate patient care in the hospital.
All hospital veterinarians should work together in a collegial fashion and are expected to behave in a professional and personable manner.
Planning and Problem Solving:
Problem solving is at the heart of veterinary medicine, and it is expected that any successful candidate will possess excellent problem-solving skills that allow expeditious diagnosis of patient problems.
Impact:
This position will impact the organization by contributing to the growth of a productive practice while focusing on a high-quality standard of care. From an overall hospital organizational standpoint, this position is critical to ensuring that we have a cohesive, well-trained, and motivated team. The desired result is the creation of an optimal environment that ensures employee retention, patient well-being, and customer satisfaction.
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, however, as stated above the Veterinarian is a de facto leader in the hospital.
Education/Experience
* Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.
* Active licensure as a veterinarian without contingencies in the state in which the hospital is located or ability to obtain by start date.
* Current DEA license.
* Current Controlled Substance License, if applicable, in state in which the hospital is located or ability to obtain by start date.
* USDA Category I (minimum) Accreditation or completion within two months of hire date.
* Must be comfortable performing anesthesia and routine surgeries including but not limited to: canine and feline spays, neuters, mass removals, and dentals.
* Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Must be compassionate and sympathetic, and be able to maintain a professional attitude and demeanor during emotional and stressful situations.
* Must have telephone and computer skills.
* Must be a team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments, offer creative ideas, and accept change.
Work Environment:
The majority of job duties are conducted in the Vetco Total Care veterinary full-service hospital. Position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds, as necessary), and standing for long periods of time. A large amount of this partner's time will be spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.

This position will regularly communicate with clients, veterinary specialists, and companies that provide products and/or services that the practice utilizes.

Knows common disease states and can alert veterinarians when symptoms change or when concerns arise with hospitalized patients.
Can prepare a patient and the machine for an ultrasound procedure. (Preferred)
Can operate MedRx, dental unit and dental radiograph, anesthetic machines, anesthetic monitoring equipment, blood pressure equipment, tonometery, microscope and digital radiography as well as any additional equipment added to the clinic with appropriate training.
Can admit patients following hospital policy and doctors' written orders.
Can discharge patients based on the veterinarian's orders, ensuring that patients are well-groomed and in a medically appropriate state to be discharged.
Can perform other duties as assigned by other members of the hospital team.
Physical Effort: Work requires lifting and carrying animals (will be assisted by other staff members in lifting animals over 40 lbs). Walks or stands for extended periods or time; frequently works in a bent position.
Working conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal eliminations, including feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Familiar with federal and state animal health laws and regulations including OSHA and DEA.

Obtain and record patient histories.

The veterinary technician is the veterinarians primary medical support. They begin the examination procedure and continue to assist the doctor throughout the examination, diagnosis and treatment phases. The Animal Care Specialist I is responsible for providing high-quality care to the animals within PetSpace, ensuring proper cleaning protocols for all animal care areas, and following proper training and enrichment protocols. This role also provides counseling and education for the general public when appropriate.
The schedule for this position will be up to three and a half days per week, (Monday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday availability required). Shift times may vary: 6:30am - 3:00pm or 11:30am - 8:00pm.
Must be 18 years or older to be employed with Wallis Annenberg PetSpace.

Clean and maintain all animal care areas, providing proper animal husbandry while following approved procedures and using appropriate products
Feed all animals their required diet and in the appropriate rations
Provide enrichment to animals to include utilizing exercise areas/walks, activities and human companionship
Complete daily health and behavior observations of all animals
Participate in behavior shaping/training of animals to enhance their adoptability
Assist with morning, mid-day and evening duties as appropriate
Assist with grooming & bathing of animals as needed
Ensure all dishes, laundry, and animal carriers are sanitized daily
Restock and perform inventory of animal care areas
Update and maintain the adoption software with adoption content (e.g. animal photos, descriptions)
Train volunteers on the proper techniques for successful animal care
Coordinate with staff and volunteers to ensure best animal handling practices
Ensure all operational procedures are followed
Communicate in an effective and professional manner with public and Annenberg PetSpace staff members
Assist with training and supervision of volunteers
Represent Annenberg PetSpace in a professional and courteous manner at all times
Requirements
Experience:
Minimum of 1 year working in animal welfare, preferably in an animal shelter or rescue organization.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent animal handling skills
Excellent customer service skills
Basic knowledge and ability to understand aspects of disease and the causes and treatment of animal-related problems
Critical evaluation and observation skills
Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and selected software/databases
Effective written and oral communication skills with ability to compose routine correspondence
Possess the ability to work efficiently and calmly under challenging conditions
Possess poise, professionalism, diplomacy, teamwork and the ability to interact with people from all walks of life

Physical Demands:
Must be able to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, grasp grip, put fingers together firmly and reach above and below shoulder level and lift, push or pull 80 pounds for situations of restraining or moving animals and lifting food and animal care supplies, repetitively use hands to operate computers; flex the neck upward and downward; twist the neck and the waist. * The Veterinary Technician supports hospital operations by providing dedicated quality veterinary care and exceptional service to our patients and clients. * Provide excellent pet care by applying full knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, specialized equipment usage, and specialized drug administration.
* Obtain and verify medications.
* Ensure that patients have food and water, clean patients' rooms, cages, and equipment; observe patients for clinical signs of disease.
* As directed, fill prescriptions and administer medications, including proper documentation, logging, and security of controlled drugs.
* Maintain a safe, secure, healthy, and humane environment by sterilizing and wrapping instruments, sanitizing and disinfecting holding and operating areas, storing sterile supplies, verifying shelf life, following standards and procedures, and in compliance with applicable legal regulations.
* Maintain medical records by documenting patients' conditions, reactions, and changes; update the database in an accurate and timely manner.

* Maintain equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining equipment supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for repairs.

Qualifications (Required)
* Must have Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substances Permit (VACSP).
* Relevant experience with veterinary appointments, surgeries, and nursing care for hospitalized and critical patients.
Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)
* Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), or the Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician (LVMT) preferred.
