As part of the OdySea Aquarium animal team, this position works with diverse animals including (but not limited to) California sea lions, Atlantic harbor seals, Asian small-clawed otters, African penguins, sea turtles, reptiles, and small exotic land animals. A central responsibility of this position will be the operation of educational animal presentations and interactions with guests. Individual will demonstrate operant conditioning within the training department and throughout the aquarium to enhance animal welfare and visitor experience opportunities. Individual will be integral in educating aquarium guests about species survival and conservation through presentations.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for maintaining the highest level of animal welfare including both proactive and reactive identification, communication, and management of areas of opportunity.
Assists with animal acquisition, transport, acclimation, and training of all animals within collection.
Responsible for advanced husbandry and behavioral training of animals in the assigned area.
Participate in educational animal presentations, shows, and interactive programs within the Aquarium.
Represent OdySea Aquarium off property through educational animal appearances at schools, media events, and other public engagements.
Representation of aquarium through positive guest interactions and experiences daily.
Assists with implementation and execution of all department Standard Operating Guidelines.
Assists in mentoring and training of junior staff.
Help create and implement enrichment plans for all animals.
Participate in collection and facilities planning, development of exhibits and educational planning, and research and conservation activities.
Inspect exhibits and related facilities daily for cleanliness and structural integrity.
Work closely and collaboratively with other departments for the welfare of our animals and enhanced guest experience.
Ensure accurate and appropriate record keeping is maintained within the department.
Communicate effectively with the rest of the Animal Care team and departmental leadership.
Assist the Animal Care Directors and the Animal Care staff to ensure adherence to aquarium standards and procedures and ensure compliance with the requirements of various professional associations and regulatory agencies.
Maintain highest level of animal husbandry and training practices.
Maintain advanced knowledge of industry innovations and progressive animal care through professional meetings and conferences, trade journals, and communication with professional colleagues.
Represent the Animal Training Department and OdySea Aquarium to visiting investors, professionals, guests, and media.
Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, or irregular hours dictated by animal needs.
Perform all other duties as assigned by Director.
Requirements
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Biology, Zoology, Marine Science or related discipline required or relative work experience.
Minimum 4 years' experience working with marine and/or terrestrial animals in professional setting.
SCUBA certification.
Excellent public speaking and showmanship experience.
Experience with neonate and juvenile rearing preferred.
Life support experience preferred.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
Must be able to access animal pools, exhibits, and enclosures.
Must be a strong swimmer, with the ability to pass departmental swim test.
Ability to stand for long periods of time, as well as walk.
Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
Ability to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb stairs, or crawl.
Required to frequently talk and hear.
No impairment of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance and agility of movement which might interfere with ability to work.
Specific vision requirement for this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
Must be able to take directional cues directly or indirectly.
Ability to work in an environment that may be loud at times.

The Veterinary Technician will be responsible for all of the essential duties related to veterinary care in the Companion Animal Clinic to support faculty teaching of veterinary students at a busy general and specialty practice. This position reports to the Veterinary Technician Supervisor at the Animal Health Institute. Must have the ability to work flexible hours based on clinical support needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in setting up treatment and procedure areas and restraining animals for procedures and treatments.
Admit patients to clinic and follow protocols.
Create accurate hospitalization and treatment estimates.
Ensure correct charges are completed in EMR daily.
Assist with anesthesia administration and monitoring.
Assist with surgical and internal medicine procedures as needed.
Responsible for radiography, venipuncture, catheter placement and bandage changes.
Monitor physical and medical conditions of hospitalized patients including pain assessment.
Administer medications and fluid therapy.
Assist with dentistry procedures.
Feed and exercise hospitalized animals as directed.
Process laundry/linen as needed to assure adequate and neat supply at all times.
Assist veterinarians in running routine lab samples.
Recordkeeping - adding appropriate patient notes into electronic medical record.
Be the patient advocate.
Assist in instructional support of students in conjunction with the faculty during patient treatments, discussions, and labs.
Follow protocols in working with patients with infectious diseases.
Maintain equipment and inventory in assigned department.
Must treat all employees, students, and clients with a high level of respect and follow customer service guidelines and protocols.

Education and/or Experience
High School diploma or GED is required. Must have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience working as a Veterinary Technician in an animal hospital or veterinary clinic setting. CVT certification from the State of Arizona is preferred. This position requires working in a team environment with a high focus on customer service with the ability to maintain a professional demeanor in a fast-paced environment. Detail oriented with the ability to promote a welcoming atmosphere is essential. The ability to speak Spanish will be considered an asset.
Computer Skills
The individual must have the ability to learn the StringSoft Veterinary Management system, and have basic proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Veterinary Technician :
Veterinary Technicians must have a broad knowledge of animal science, medicine, and husbandry, including a basic knowledge of pharmacology and sufficient mathematical skills to ensure the administration of accurate drug and fluid doses. They must be able to successfully restrain animals, complete clinical laboratory tests, use multiple radiology techniques, administer and monitor animals under anesthesia, and assist in surgery. Veterinary Technicians must also deliver compassionate patient care and customer service.
At SVSS, the veterinary technicians assist with a variety of specialty surgical procedures. Daily duties include pre and post-surgical diagnostic lab tests, preparing and scrubbing surgical sites for sterile procedures, assisting the veterinarian during surgeries, handing out necessary surgical tools during procedures, bandaging wounds, changing wound dressings as needed, placing catheters, taking radiographs (x-rays) and other functions.
Veterinary Technicians may be required to travel to multiple Phoenix metro locations based on business need. SVSS is a specialty services surgical center which means there is a need to address emergency situations as they arise. Veterinary technicians and doctors are responsible for coverage of on-call shifts which are scheduled on a rotational basis. Because we understand the impact to veterinary technician life while on call, SVSS does offer additional compensation for any on-call hours worked. During the normal work week a Veterinary Technicians on call hours start at 6pm. Any on calls shifts scheduled during the weekends and/or any holidays there would be expected 24x7 on-call availability from the Veterinary Technician.

The Veterinary Technician, Mid-shift ICU is the primary caretaker for all Intensive Care Unit patients in the Companion Animal Clinic. The skilled technician requires a high degree of independent judgment when delivering critical care to ICU patients. This position reports directly to the Veterinary Technician Supervisor at the Companion Animal Clinic. The hours for the Veterinary Technician Mid-shift ICU position are typically between 12:00pm-10:30pm - Monday through Thursday but may change depending on clinic needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Admit patients to the Intensive Care Unit for hospitalization utilizing electronic records and treatment sheets
* Monitor physical conditions, wounds, and medical diseases of hospitalized patients including pain assessments, ensuring patients remain in stable condition
* Provide basic life support and advanced life support to critical care patients
* Assist with emergency medical care for critical patients under supervision of the attending veterinarian
* Use independent judgement to determine appropriate medical care to stabilize patients when attending veterinarian is not present
* Set up equipment and supplies correctly for hospitalization, treatments, and procedures
* Act as the primary care giver for ICU patients during the mid shift by completing the following duties under limited supervision:
* Take and record TPR at frequent intervals
* Complete calculations for proper dilutions of medications and fluid therapy management including opioids and other controlled drugs
* Administer medications and fluid therapy in accordance with timed treatments
* Restrain animals in a humane manner to minimize pain and stress
* Assist with anesthesia administration and monitoring
* Responsible for radiography, venipuncture, catheter placement and bandage changes
* Feed and exercise hospitalized animals as directed
* Work with veterinary students to create accurate hospitalization and treatment forms and estimates
* Ensure correct charges are entered in practice management software daily
* Assist veterinarians in running of routine and emergency lab samples
* Communicate with the veterinarian on duty and veterinary students on medical cases
* Recordkeeping - Adding appropriate patient notes into electronic medical record.
* Follow protocols in working with patients with infectious diseases
* Be the advocate for all patients in the Intensive Care Unit
* Discharge patients from the clinic
* Assist in instructional support of students in conjunction with the faculty during discussions and treatments
* Process laundry/linen as needed to always assure adequate and neat supply
* Maintain equipment and inventory in the department
* Must treat all employees, students, and clients with a high level of respect and follow customer service guidelines and protocols.

The ideal candidate will have prior experience with fluid therapy management. This position requires working in a team environment with a high focus on patient care. Detail oriented with the ability to promote a teaching atmosphere is essential.
Computer Skills
The individual must have the ability to learn the StringSoft Veterinary Management system, and have basic proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

General Knowledge
* Know the range of services the practice provides and the species it serves.
* Be familiar with common procedures performed in exotic animal practice
* Know the basics of working safely with birds, reptiles, and exotic mammals including hoofstock.
* Follow OSHA standards. Be able to find Safety Data Sheets quickly.
* Know and use standard medical and business abbreviations.
* Use proper medical terminology and spelling when speaking and writing.
* Be familiar with infectious diseases, including their prevention and steps to reduce or eliminate transmission. Know the most common zoonotic diseases (infections from animals to humans).
Education and/or Experience
High School diploma or GED is required. Must have a minimum of 5-7 years of experience working in an animal hospital or veterinary clinic setting. Must have at least 3-5 years of solid experience handling exotic animals. CVT certification from the State of Arizona is preferred. This position requires working in a team environment with a high focus on customer service with the ability to maintain a professional demeanor in a fast paced environment. Detail oriented with the ability to promote a welcoming atmosphere is essential. The ability to speak Spanish will be considered an asset.
Computer Skills
The individual must have the ability to learn the StringSoft Veterinary Management system, and have basic proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
