Essential Job Functions:
Listed are the essential duties and responsibilities that are required of this position. This section includes the primary accountabilities or duties of the job. The incumbent must be able to perform all the following duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation:
* Provide excellent patient care by performing physical examinations, diagnosing and treating diseases, and providing preventive care according to patient signalment, lifestyle, and environment.
* Utilize a problem-based approach that includes developing a complete problem list for every patient examined, a complete list of differential diagnoses for each problem identified, a complete diagnostic plan, and appropriate treatments based on interpretation of diagnostic test results leading to confirmed or suspected diagnoses.
* Document all patient observations, findings of exams and diagnostics, treatments and medications, client interactions, and tentative and confirmed diagnoses in the medical record in a concise and detail fashion, according to practice convention.
* Perform routine and complex surgical procedures including (but not limited) spays/neuters, abdominal exploratory, and mass removals.
* Perform routine and complex dental procedures including full dental examination, evaluation of dental radiographs, as well as simple and complex extractions and oral surgical procedures.
* Develop treatment plans for patients undergoing day hospitalization based on complete problem-based assessment. Transition patients to overnight care as needed and communicate effectively with referral hospitals to ensure continuity of patient care.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
* Participate in rounds as incoming or exiting doctor at beginning and end of shifts.
* Disseminate knowledge throughout staff to improve the level of care and communication provided hospital partners, to both the patient and the client.
* Performs additional duties as assigned.
Nature of Supervision:
In all activities related to the care of individual patients, the Veterinarian will take direct supervision from the Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director. The Veterinarian has discretion related to decisions regarding patient care, however, it is imperative that the Veterinarian uphold the standards set forth in the Petco Veterinary SOPs. The Veterinarian should expect to receive direction and guidance based on electronic medical record review from the Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director regarding patient decisions and should accept such feedback as a means to elevate patient care in the hospital.
All hospital veterinarians should work together in a collegial fashion and are expected to behave in a professional and personable manner.
Planning and Problem Solving:
Problem solving is at the heart of veterinary medicine, and it is expected that any successful candidate will possess excellent problem-solving skills that allow expeditious diagnosis of patient problems.
Impact:
This position will impact the organization by contributing to the growth of a productive practice while focusing on a high-quality standard of care. From an overall hospital organizational standpoint, this position is critical to ensuring that we have a cohesive, well-trained, and motivated team. Supervisory Responsibility:
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, however, as stated above the Veterinarian is a de facto leader in the hospital.
Education/Experience
* Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.
* Active licensure as a veterinarian without contingencies in the state in which the hospital is located or ability to obtain by start date.
* Current DEA license.
* Current Controlled Substance License, if applicable, in state in which the hospital is located or ability to obtain by start date.
* USDA Category I (minimum) Accreditation or completion within two months of hire date.
* Must be comfortable performing anesthesia and routine surgeries including but not limited to: canine and feline spays, neuters, mass removals, and dentals.
* Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Must be compassionate and sympathetic, and be able to maintain a professional attitude and demeanor during emotional and stressful situations.
* Must have telephone and computer skills.
* Must be a team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments, offer creative ideas, and accept change.
Work Environment:
The majority of job duties are conducted in the Vetco Total Care veterinary full-service hospital. Position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds, as necessary), and standing for long periods of time. A large amount of this partner's time will be spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.

Greet clients and patients arriving for appointments or walk-ins and escort into an exam room, obtain weight and vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, pain score, body condition score), record all in the electronic medical record, and begin documentation of the patient visit in the electronic medical record by obtaining and recording a thorough patient history.
Assist veterinarian with appointments (routine and emergency), surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia's, taking direct supervision from the veterinarian(s) and the Hospital Office Manager or Hospital Leader on Duty.
Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications at the direction of the veterinarian, and maintain the electronic medical record.
Schedule appointments, communicate with and educate clients, relay test results to doctor and clients, maintain and update inventory as well as client/patient records, and manage accounts receivable.
Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, safely support induction and monitoring of anesthetized patients including checking and recording vital parameters (under direction of the veterinarian), monitor patients during recovery, and prepare them for discharge to owner or transfer to an overnight care facility as needed.
Provide in-hospital treatments for sick patients including giving injectable and oral medications as well as intravenous therapies; keep patients clean, watered, and fed (when indicated and directed by veterinarian), and safely walk canine patients when necessary for elimination.
Participate in the training of new staff members and general dissemination of knowledge as required.
Keep hospital environment neat and clean; perform regular cleaning of environment based on necessity as well as based on a pre-determined maintenance schedule.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Provide backup phone and front desk support as needed.

* Keep hospital environment neat and clean; perform regular cleaning of environment based on necessity as well as based on a pre-determined maintenance schedule.

Nature of Supervision:

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Serve as Hawaiian Humane Society's lead shelter medical and surgical staff member. Provides direction to the department to establish best practices in shelter medicine and HQHV surgical practices. Working in collaboration with their team and the operations team establishes appropriate veterinary policies for all shelter operations. Adheres to the highest ethical standards and ensures that veterinary care is provided in a safe, competent, professional and humane manner.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop, implement, and monitor medical programs that achieve and maintain the highest standard of animal and veterinary care. Ensuring that we are staying up to date on best practices in shelter medicine and HQHV surgery.
Collaborate with the veterinary services manager and spay/neuter center manager to monitor and evaluate departmental/area processes and procedures, that we are using appropriate and up-to-date medical and surgical practices, and to maximize efficient uses of resources.
Collaborate with the Director of Operations to coordinate staff and volunteer training and mentorship to ensure we are using and working towards best practices in animal welfare in all areas of animal operations.
Supervise, train, coach and mentor staff Veterinarians and Veterinary interns/externs, specifically to their provision of veterinary medicine and surgery.
Supervise veterinarians and veterinary interns regarding core values outside of medicine and surgery.
Maintain a culture of collaboration and teamwork.
Work with the Director of Operations and other departments to effectively and efficiently coordinate care and quarantine of infectious disease and affected animals.
Serve as a liaison and spokesperson promoting HHS's philosophy and goals to veterinarians, vendors, the public, media, law enforcement and other animal welfare related organizations.
Perform surgical procedures on a routine basis including high quality, high volume spay/neuter, dentistry, and various soft tissue and orthopedic procedures.
Perform veterinary medical functions including examination and treatment of shelter animals. Perform necropsies as needed.
Supervises the use, control, and recording of controlled drugs used in department according to federal, state, and HHS regulations and procedure.
Participate in euthanasia decision making. Train and certify staff to perform euthanasia procedures. Collaborate with veterinary services manager on euthanasia training and SOP development.
Work with Field Services investigations staff for evaluation, documentation and testimony about the condition of animals involved in cruelty, neglect, abandonment and other investigation cases. Assist with coordination of external resources related to the development of veterinary related evidence as needed.
Consult and provide assistance to patrons and external veterinarians regarding animals at or adopted from HHS.
Develop SOPs and ensure they are updated and practiced with staff and volunteers.
Work with the veterinary services manager to prepare, understand and implement the annual budget.
Participate in strategic initiatives as appropriate
Recruit, hire, develop, coach and counsel veterinarians and assist in the process for support staff.
