The Animal Care Specialist is responsible for performing routine work assignments involving the daily care and welfare of animals within their area. This position also performs daily maintenance of animal habitats and holding areas, as well as interacts with the public to provide information related to the Zoo & Aquarium's animal collection.
This position will work with the Water's Edge Team, which is responsible for the daily husbandry of polar bears, California sea lions, southern sea otters, North American river otters, five species of penguins (King, Gentoo, Chinstrap, Macaroni, Humboldt) and trumpeter swans.
POSITION DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Administering medications and assisting with various animal health procedures.
Observing, logging, and reporting issues concerning animal behavior, health, and welfare.

* This position may at times be requested to perform other duties or special projects as assigned, which are in the best interest of the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium. Additionally, specific duties and percentages may vary slightly between each Animal Care Team.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION & FORMAL TRAINING:
Bachelor's degree in biology, animal science, zoology, or related field preferred.
Applicable experience can be substituted in place of formal education on a year-for-year basis for candidates not currently holding a degree.
EXPERIENCE:
Previous hands-on experience with the care and management of similar species strongly preferred.
Knowledge of animal husbandry, behavior, procedures for proper care, and training of exotic animals.
Strong observational skills to recognize and evaluate conditions of animal health, diets, and behavior.
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, required.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, including procedures for care and maintenance of animals, habitats, service and holding areas.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Must have or be willing to obtain a SCUBA certification within six months of hire.
Open Water SCUBA certification from an internationally recognized certifying agency is preferred.
Must pass AAUS-compliant dive physical and swim test within six months of hire.
Dive tasks require manual dexterity and ability to safely use tools (e.g. brushes) and operate equipment (e.g. operation/manipulation of dive gear).
Must be willing to dive in cold temperatures and in the presence of animals (sharks, penguins, venomous fish).
Must have valid driver's license.
Must have or be able to obtain negative TB test.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds and have sufficient mobility to ensure a safe work environment.
Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
Must be able to manage stress, endure high risk situations when feeding, transferring, or restraining animals, and make immediate decisions concerning the safety of animals, staff, or the public.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and evening hours, in all weather extremes.
Must pass a background and drug screening.

Mill Creek Animal Hospital is looking for a full-time Registered Veterinary Technician to add to its dedicated team.

Daily duties may include, but are not limited to:
Nail trims, anal gland expression, administering vaccines, assisting with xrays, labwork, setting up fecals, HWT, urinalysis tests, SQ fluid administration, client education, starting exam rooms for our doctors, cleaning/prepping surgery packs, as well as general hospital cleaning and pet laundry. Under the direction of the Shelter Veterinarian/Clinic Supervisor, this position will assist with assuring the medical health and well-being of shelter animals, including but not limited to assisting with surgical procedures, preparing surgical instruments, entering data into computerized medical database, administering vaccinations and medications, performing diagnostic tests, assisting with euthanasia, maintaining the facility in a clean and orderly manner incompliance with shelter protocols, and utilizing knowledge of medical, behavioral and general care protocols for the health and well-being of the animals. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required, with experience in animal welfare and shelter operations or high-volume spay/neuter clinics preferred. Veterinary Technician Certification preferred but will consider applicant with equivalent experience. Must be skilled in animal handling and have general knowledge of a variety of animal species and their health, care, behavior, common diseases, and medical conditions, and behavior. The qualified candidate will be proficient in oral and written communication, computer usage and the use of basic computer programs, with a strong customer service background and the ability to multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently. Must have an understanding of veterinary terminology, procedures and animal health issues, and possess knowledge of veterinary surgical operations, monitoring, preparation and equipment including drugs and instruments. Must possess a valid driver's license and complete required NIMS level training within the first six months of hire.
Physical Demands: Strength and agility sufficient to lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds with reasonable accommodations. Ability to handle and control animals of various species, size and temperament, including aggressive and dangerous animals. Standing on feet for 8 hours per day. Extended periods of standing, walking, and animal handling.
Typical Working Conditions: Work is performed in a clinic/shelter setting. Exposure to difficult public contacts. Exposure to animals of all types and temperaments, zoonotic diseases, potentially hazardous work areas, animal feces, dirty or unsanitary conditions and caustic chemicals. Noise levels in the shelter vary but may be moderate to high at times.

This position also performs daily maintenance of animal habitats and holding areas, as well as interacts with the public to provide information related to the Zoo & Aquarium's animal collection.
This position will work with the Elephant Team, which is responsible for the daily husbandry of African elephants.

Basic Qualifications
Minimum of one year of experience working with and/or caring for companion animals and aquatic life is required for this position. Certification

Education/Skills

Supervisory Responsibility
* Ensures that the Pet Care Center is opened and / or closed in accordance with established P&Ps as it applies to SFS operations.

Work Environment
The majority of job duties are conducted indoors, although guest carryouts and veterinary visits will require that a partner leave the PCC briefly. EDUCATION & FORMAL TRAINING:

EXPERIENCE:
Previous hands-on experience with the care and management of similar species strongly preferred.
Knowledge of animal husbandry, behavior, procedures for proper care, and training of exotic animals.
Strong observational skills to recognize and evaluate conditions of animal health, diets, and behavior.
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Clean and disinfect animal housing. Maintain a clean and safe living environment for shelter animals.
* Admit unwanted animals delivered to the animal shelter after conducting relinquishment interviews and animal assessments. Perform redemption of impounded animals. Conduct adoption of shelter animals including adoption interviews and counseling.
* Issue legal notices, summons, and other documents requested by Animal Control Officers.

Basic Qualifications
Minimum of one year of experience working with and/or caring for companion animals and aquatic life is required for this position. Certification
Completing and maintaining of the Petco Animal Care Certification program is required in this role.
Education/Skills
In addition to a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED), an applicant must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the areas of mathematics and basic accounting relationships and exhibit exceptional communication skills.
Supervisory Responsibility
* Ensures that the Pet Care Center is opened and / or closed in accordance with established P&Ps as it applies to SFS operations.

Work Environment
The majority of job duties are conducted indoors, although guest carryouts and veterinary visits will require that a partner leave the PCC briefly.
