Nestled deep in the beautiful bay area 5 minutes from downtown Annapolis is our state-of-the-art ER and referral center open 24 hours and 365 days a year. We have 25+ Veterinarians, 50+ Technicians, 20+ Assistants and 20+ Client Service Representatives. We work side-by-side with different specialty practices (Neurology, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Surgery, Ophthalmology, and Rehabilitation) and care for their patients overnight.
Available Shift:
12pm-12am Saturday and Sunday - Admitting/ICU

RVTs: $28 - $40 per hour
Non- credentialed techs: $21 - $35 per hour
What You'll Get to Do!
As a veterinary technician you will commonly:
Assess patients upon arrival and prioritize them based on their health status after obtaining vitals
Initiate stabilization treatments such as intravenous catheterization, blood collection, fluid therapy, oxygen therapy and administering medications as directed by veterinarian
Participate in the development and implementation of treatment plans created by the veterinarian
Administers high quality patient care through timely monitoring; correctly performs treatments as directed by veterinarian
Collect and analyze blood, urine, fecal and skin samples in our in-house laboratory full of Idexx analyzers
Administer anesthetic drugs and adjust them as needed during procedures and surgery, while recording and monitoring vital signs
Produce images of soft-tissues, organs and bones safely with digital radiography equipment
Place nasoesophageal and nasogastric feeding tubes for critical nutrition by mastering various suturing techniques
Supply patients in need with packed red blood cell and frozen plasma transfusions
Correctly calculates drug dosages and administers drugs as directed by veterinarian
Lavage and assist in bandaging different wounds and lacerations
Provide top quality care for post-surgical cases, including specialty ICU cases
Provides outstanding customer service when triaging, gathering patient information and relevant history
Attend CE courses/webinars or hands-on training as requested by the Clinical Educator
Regularly attend staff meetings
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
Working knowledge and skill required to nurse critically ill and emergency patients
Ability to critically think, problem solve, and make decisions in order to follow through on DVM orders
Knowledge of basic computer functions and the ability to learn new veterinary based software applications
Ability to work in a fast-paced, stressful work environment. Must be able to maintain professionalism and composure at all times.
Able to effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors, clients and the public in a professional manner
Knowledge of the use, care, and storage of veterinary instruments, materials, and equipment.
Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.
Ability to speak, read and write the English language
Education and Experience for Technicians:
5 years of veterinary technician experience

Responsibilities
Major Duties:
Our Veterinary Technicians are responsible for in-patient and out-patient medical care – this includes but is not limited to the following:
Anesthesia/Surgery – Drug calculations, prep (IV/IM pre-meds, IV catheter placement, surgical shaving), induction, monitoring (full monitoring of EKG, SPO2, EtCO2, BP and Temp), recovery of patients (including post operative TPRs), clean/maintain/sterilize anesthesia equipment and surgical instruments.
Dentistry- Patient dental care includes ultrasonic scaling and polishing, dental radiographs and charting.
Radiology – Positioning of patients for various radiographs (Thoracic, Abdominal, TPLO etc.) and submission of radiographs to specialists.
Laboratory duties- Responsible for collecting, preparing, and submitting samples for requested tests; running/reading/recording in-house lab work results when requested by doctor (iSTAT, ProBnp, Felv/FIV, Ear cytology, UA/USG, PCV/TP).
General technician responsibilities:
*Appointments: Check- in and gather medical history, authorize/start scribenote, patient TPR, prepare supplies (vaccines, ear cytology slide, eye stain kit etc.), create treatment plan invoice, filled prescribed medications/ go over discharge instructions, and check out client in room when able to.
(For technician appointments you are required to utilize all general technical skills, process labs, fill medications and check out client).
*Communicate with clients effectively regarding client education, patient updates, discharge instructions, treatment plans (medications, follow ups), and provide patient demos for clients to do treatments at home when needed.
*General technician skills include but are not limited to preforming nails trims, anal gland expression, ear cleaning, blood draws (Cephalic, Saphenous or Jugular), cystocentesis, blood pressure check via Doppler, suture/staple removal, bandage/split changes when indicated, clip and cleans.
*During down time/in between appointments all technicians are expected to make sure rooms and treatment areas are clean, restocked and safe for use: check laundry, help to package and keep lab clean, fill printed prescriptions for pick up.
*When needed, we will assist reception in answering phone calls, booking appointments, and helping with check-ins/check-outs.
Qualifications
All veterinary technicians must be able to do the following:
Stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds and over 50 pounds with a coworker.
Endure sitting, standing and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods of time.
Possess sufficient ambulatory skills to perform duties while in hospital environment.
Work in noisy work conditions with sounds from animals and equipment that can be moderately high.
You may be routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances. As a veterinary technician you will commonly:

Lavage and assist in bandaging different wounds and lacerations
Provide top quality care for post-surgical cases, including specialty ICU cases
Provides outstanding customer service when triaging, gathering patient information and relevant history

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

Key Responsibilities:
Assist veterinary technicians and veterinarians with various tasks, including animal restraint, medication administration, and sample collection.
Maintain a clean and organized clinic/hospital environment by disinfecting surfaces, sanitizing equipment, and cleaning kennels and cages.
Prepare examination rooms for appointments, ensuring they are well-stocked and organized.
Greet and assist clients, helping them feel welcome and comfortable during their visit.
Escort clients and their pets to exam rooms and obtain preliminary information, such as medical history and reason for the visit.
Provide support during medical procedures, including setting up equipment, holding animals, and monitoring their well-being.
Prepare and label laboratory samples accurately, following proper protocols.
Assist with radiography (X-rays) by positioning animals and operating equipment under the direction of the veterinary team.
Help educate clients on topics such as medication administration, preventive care, and post-operative instructions.
Keep accurate and detailed records of patient care, treatments, and interactions.
Assist with inventory management, restocking supplies, and maintaining an organized storage area.

Qualifications:

Job Description
The Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA), the first unified organization in a major urban area to provide animal welfare programs and services to the community, seeks a Field Veterinary Technician to assist the Field Veterinarians in providing medical care to sick and injured, owned pets within the DC community. HRA’s Field Veterinary Program (FVP) provides free veterinary services to members of the public via appointment or referral from Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) and/or DC Animal Control Services. This position offers a unique opportunity to work for an innovative, mission-oriented organization committed to changing the landscape of animal welfare.
The Field Services Veterinary Technician assists the Field Services Veterinarian with providing preventive and primary medical services to DC’s most underserved communities with little to no access to veterinary clinics or other essential pet resources. This new program will aid in building relationships deep within the communities we serve and help to divert the intake of animals who can be treated in a home setting with the families who love and care for them.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Appointments and Medical Care
Assist the Field Services Veterinarian with in-home patient appointments for basic wellness procedures, including administering vaccinations, parasite treatments, and routine screenings
Assist the Field Services Veterinarian with patient exams, including obtaining patient history, addressing client concerns, and perform indicated diagnostic testing. Prepare medications for the client/patient as prescribed by the veterinarian.
Properly restrain animals during medical exams using
Fear Free
methods (towel wraps, muzzles, and non-restraint using treats.)
Inform and educate clients on animal health status, health inquiries, diseases, and proper care.
Calculate, administer and record medications, complete controlled drug logs.
Assist and perform at home euthanasia for patients.
Capture diagnostic radiographs.
Respond to emergency situations and begin first aid or CPR as needed.
Perform nursing care such as wound care, administering medications (oral, topical, injectable), advising clients on feeding special diets, checking vital signs, and administering and monitoring IV fluid therapy.
Fill prescriptions.
Provide vaccinations and basic wellness care on site and in the community at subsidized free or low-cost clinics.
Operate HRA company vehicle and effectively navigate through the city to get to scheduled appointments
Customer Service
Communicate respectfully with clients and be able to relay important medical information about patients. Discuss examination and medical test results with pet owner to allow them to make informed choices for the medical care of their pets.
Counsel owners about end of life and other sensitive medical care decisions.
Provide discharge instructions for patients and oversee the dispensing of medications.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of veterinary technician and animal shelter procedures and protocols including pharmacology, restraint and handling techniques, phlebotomy, laboratory skills, triage of emergencies, general nursing care, and infectious diseases
Ability to uphold excellent standards of care
Ability to lead effectively and remain professional in an in-home atmosphere that can result in high stress situations and emotional decisions for clients

Assist with equipment maintenance and inventory management as assigned.

Maintain departmental procedures and protocols regarding humane care and treatment of animals.

Follow safety guidelines, maintain a healthy and safe environment for animals and people.
Take immediate action to address any safety concerns or noncompliance of safety rules that could put an employee, client, animal, volunteer, or organization at risk.
Always represent HRA in a professional and courteous manner. Provide quality service to the public and employees, recognizing their individual contributions to the success of the organization.
Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by Field Veterinary Technician Manager or Field Veterinary Program Director.
Additional Requirements
Proficient technical skills, including but not limited to administering medications, phlebotomy, placing IV catheters, analyzing blood and urine samples, obtain vital signs, monitor anesthesia, capture radiographs.
Knowledge of Field Services procedures and protocols or the willingness to learn such procedures and protocols.
Knowledge and skill in restraint and handling techniques, general animal safety practices, including recognizing animal behavior patterns.
Ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment, in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressures.
Ability to be flexible, detail oriented and able to prioritize.
