Your day to day General husbandry and care of assigned animals, including preparing and distributing approved animal diets. Close observation of animal behaviors with a particular focus on appropriate appetite, mobility and waste production to monitor health of animals, notification of appropriate animal care staff of any concerns. Shift animals according to area's standard operating procedures (SOP). Animal capture, restraint and handling techniques. Engage with the Zoo guests at exhibits, conservation stations, keeper talks, training demonstrations and/or shows. Maintain detailed daily records on assigned animals. Assist in animal procedures including, but not limited to, translocations, veterinary procedures and crating. Strong knowledge of Zoo layout and general animal collection to respond quickly during animal emergencies and also assist guests on a daily basis with exhibit location. Initiates and completes area projects with supervisor's approval. Adherence to area's standard operating procedures (SOP). Knowledge of safety SOP, safety concerns and reporting protocols. Knowledge of husbandry requirements and the prevention of zoonotic diseases. Knowledge of basic nutrition requirements for assigned area(s). Assist registrar in area's record keeping. Inspect, clean and maintain both exhibit and off-exhibit areas. Propose and perform species-specific enrichment. Promote active guest engagement through interaction with guests during both formal and informal discussions, during events and as otherwise assigned. Report animal illness, maintenance, safety, horticulture or other needs to appropriate staff. Assist in animal procedures including, but not limited to, translocations, veterinary procedures and crating. Respond to and assist supervisor in guiding the resolution of emergency situations (e.g., Code I, II, III) within the Zoo. Guide subordinate co-workers on intermediate procedures. Observe safety policies and procedures in regard to the use of Zoo equipment, materials, chemicals and vehicles. What are we looking for? High school diploma or general education degree (GED); AA degree or higher preferred. Three or more years paid keeper experience in an AZA accredited institution. SCUBA and First-Aid Certification for specific areas. Knowledge of Word Processing software and Spreadsheet software. Must have good written and oral communication skills and ability to effectively participate in guest engagement activities. Must be self-motivated and goal oriented. Must be able to maintain discretion with confidential information. Ability to appropriately apply animal training through the use of operant and classical conditioning. Thorough knowledge of zoonotic diseases and prevention. Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with members of all departments and to work effectively alone and in group settings. Ability to complete projects in a reasonable time frame to the satisfaction of management. Deal courteously and tactfully with employees, peers, superiors and the general public. Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions. Must have the ability to follow specific instructions and also be comfortable self-directing. Must be flexible and have the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive attitude with the public. Must have ability to navigate paved as well as rough terrain on foot and by vehicle. Must be able to safely and effectively engage in heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds). Observes animals post surgically for signs of complications and records findings in surgical records. Administers medications, vaccines, anesthetic agents, intramuscular, subcutaneous and intravenous injections in accordance with Veterinarian instructions, established policies and in accordance with laws and regulations. Performs the euthanasia of animals in accordance with established policies and humane guidelines for the treatment of diseased, injured or sick animals. Provides oversight and checks the work of Certified Animal Care Assistant. May work as a team lead. Prepares drugs for administration and properly records in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. Prepares specimens for shipment to outside laboratories including associated paperwork. Provides training to staff and volunteers on veterinary-related topics. Supports the department in mandated ESF-17 (Emergency Support Function 17) responsibilities in the event of a disaster or during an activation of the County's Emergency Operations Center. Minimum Qualifications Required Graduation from an accredited 2- year or 4-year veterinary technician program; AND Successfully passing the Certified Veterinary Technician examination for the state of Florida, or being a Licensed Veterinary Technician from another state; AND Two year of experience working in an animal shelter or under the supervision of a Veterinarian, assisting in surgery, medical treatments, and performing diagnostic procedures; OR An equivalent combination of education (not less than a high school diploma/GED), training, and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job‐related competencies noted above; AND Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License; AND Must be able to perform euthanasia in the state of Florida, or to pass the examination for a Euthanasia Technician within six months of employment. Position Overview We are seeking a skilled and experienced Veterinary Assistant or Technician to join our dedicated team. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about animal care and has a strong background in veterinary surgery. We are specifically looking for a candidate who can confidently lead and manage the surgical element of our practice, including preparation, monitoring, and post-operative care. The ideal candidate will have: Proven experience in veterinary surgical procedures Ability to work independently and collaboratively with veterinarians Strong technical skills in anesthesia, surgical prep, and recovery Excellent communication and organizational abilities A commitment to compassionate, high-quality care Additionally, this position uses sound judgment when making decisions about patient care, responds quickly and calmly to emergencies, and maintains high standards of patient care. This person communicates clearly with the veterinarians, other practice personnel, and clients to ensure that patients receive the care they need. Assistants are friendly and flexible in the face of varying expectations from clients and coworkers. They multi-task, prioritize tasks well, and think creatively. Veterinary Assistants strongly believe in the quality of care provided and communicate this sense of assurance to clients. The Assistant provides patient and client comfort by keeping the hospital clean and presentable and may provide training to other members of the healthcare team. Position reports to Practice Manager and receives direction from veterinarians. Works alongside the Technicians, who determine the scope and type of support services to be furnished and the procedures used to accomplish them. Patient Care Provides compassionate patient care, keeping patients clean, dry, and comfortable. Alerts the veterinarian(s) to changes in patients' condition. Recognizes patients with contagious disease and follows relevant procedures. Provides safe and effective patient restraint. Medicates patients. Uses proper safety techniques and positioning for radiological procedures. Recovers patients from anesthesia. Assists veterinarians and technicians in surgery and dentistry. Performs basic emergency care, CPR, and intensive care as needed. Helps with and documents patient treatments. Walks, cleans, and feeds patients. Sets up and assists with procedures, such as IV catheterization and other common treatments. Bathes patients as needed. Assists with patient admits and releases as needed. Ensures patients leave in better condition than when they arrived (e.g., clean and with IV catheter removed). Maintains knowledge of drugs and their uses. Calculates drug dosages and fills prescriptions accurately; asks for guidance if necessary. Assists with lab tests as needed. Completes medical records accurately and efficiently. Performs procedures such as pedicures and fluid administration. Equipment and Facility Maintenance Cleans, cares for, and packs surgical equipment properly. Keeps hospital clean and stocked. Removes trash from hospital and sweeps and mops floors daily. Launderers soiled blankets, towels, and other linens. Utilizes in-house inventory control procedures to ensure items are stocked appropriately. Ability to complete assigned tasks in the time allotted without direct supervision. Demonstrated ability to show empathy toward clients and treat animals with respect and compassion. Excellent interpersonal communication skills. A commitment to outstanding client service. Ability to lift objects weighing 40 pounds without assistance and objects weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance. Ability to stay on task and work energetically for entire shift, sometimes exceeding 10 hours per day.
