MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for maintaining the highest level of animal welfare including both proactive and reactive identification, communication, and management of areas of opportunity.
Assists with animal acquisition, transport, acclimation, and training of all animals within collection.
Responsible for advanced husbandry and behavioral training of animals in the assigned area.
Participate in educational animal presentations, shows, and interactive programs within the Aquarium.

Requirements
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Biology, Zoology, Marine Science or related discipline required or relative work experience.
Minimum 4 years' experience working with marine and/or terrestrial animals in professional setting.
SCUBA certification.
Excellent public speaking and showmanship experience.
Experience with neonate and juvenile rearing preferred.
Life support experience preferred.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Qualifications
The position requires a minimum of a high school diploma and three years of animal handling experience or Associates Degree and 2 years of animal handling experience or Bachelor's degree and 1 year of animal handling experience. Must be able to assume responsibility, work independently, without close supervision, and cooperatively with other animal care technicians. Must be able to carefully follow set procedures as dictated by the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Animals, the Animal Welfare Act and guidelines established by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care. Veterinary Technician :
Veterinary Technicians must have a broad knowledge of animal science, medicine, and husbandry, including a basic knowledge of pharmacology and sufficient mathematical skills to ensure the administration of accurate drug and fluid doses. They must be able to successfully restrain animals, complete clinical laboratory tests, use multiple radiology techniques, administer and monitor animals under anesthesia, and assist in surgery. Veterinary Technicians must also deliver compassionate patient care and customer service.
At SVSS, the veterinary technicians assist with a variety of specialty surgical procedures. Daily duties include pre and post-surgical diagnostic lab tests, preparing and scrubbing surgical sites for sterile procedures, assisting the veterinarian during surgeries, handing out necessary surgical tools during procedures, bandaging wounds, changing wound dressings as needed, placing catheters, taking radiographs (x-rays) and other functions.
Veterinary Technicians may be required to travel to multiple Phoenix metro locations based on business need. SVSS is a specialty services surgical center which means there is a need to address emergency situations as they arise. Veterinary technicians and doctors are responsible for coverage of on-call shifts which are scheduled on a rotational basis. Because we understand the impact to veterinary technician life while on call, SVSS does offer additional compensation for any on-call hours worked. During the normal work week a Veterinary Technicians on call hours start at 6pm. Any on calls shifts scheduled during the weekends and/or any holidays there would be expected 24x7 on-call availability from the Veterinary Technician.

The Veterinary Technician, Exotic Animals will be responsible for providing veterinary technician services in support of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) exotic animal medicine service, typically performed at off-campus facilities. Technical duties include, but are not limited to, assistance with laboratory, surgical, and emergency care procedures. The individual must take initiative and responsibility for completion of assigned tasks, with or without direct supervision. This position reports to the Manager of the Companion Animal Clinic at the Animal Health Institute. The individual must have excellent communication skills, patience, compassion, a willingness to teach students, and the ability to work flexible hours based on clinical support needs. This is a day shift full-time position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Support faculty and students in the delivery of patient care at a variety of facilities
* Assist in setting up surgical and treatment areas and restraining exotic animals for procedures and treatments
* Ensure facilities are properly equipped to handle exotic species, including husbandry and nutrition. Assist with husbandry of patients in clinic
* Follow guidelines and protocols established at on-site and off-site facilities
* Assist with anesthesia administration and monitoring which includes sedation, intubation, recovery and post-operative monitoring of exotic species.
* Assist with surgical procedures as needed
* Responsible for performing or overseeing and providing direction for students during radiography, venipuncture, catheter placement, bandage changes, administer medications, IV fluids, etc. for exotic species.
* Monitor physical and medical conditions of hospitalized patients including pain assessment
* Administer medications and fluid therapy as directed
* Process laundry/linen as needed to assure adequate and neat supply at all times
* Assist in the sterilization department as needed
* Assist veterinarians in running of routine lab samples
* Recordkeeping - Adding appropriate patient notes into electronic medical record
* Assist in instructional support of students in conjunction with the faculty during discussions and labs
* Follow protocols in working with patients with infectious diseases
* Feed and exercise hospitalized animals as directed
* Admit patients to clinic and follow protocols as requested
* Create accurate hospitalization and treatment estimates as needed
* Ensure correct charges are completed in EMR as requested
* Proper handling and restraint of multiple exotics species
* Assist veterinarian during physical examinations and diagnostics for multiple exotic species
* Demonstrate medical knowledge across multiple species
* Collecting and processing laboratory samples from multiple species
* Be familiar with advanced imaging modalities across multiple species
* Understand behavior patterns of multiple exotic species
* Be prepared to recognize and respond to emergencies and critical care situations involving exotic species

This position requires working in a team environment with a high focus on customer service with the ability to maintain a professional demeanor in a fast paced environment. Detail oriented with the ability to promote a welcoming atmosphere is essential. The ability to speak Spanish will be considered an asset.
Computer Skills
The individual must have the ability to learn the StringSoft Veterinary Management system, and have basic proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Requirements
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Biology, Zoology, Marine Science or related discipline preferred, equivalent alternate experience accepted.
Minimum 1 year paid experience working with and training marine and/or terrestrial animals at an AZA accredited or equivalent facility.
SCUBA certification.
Excellent public speaking and showmanship experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
Must be able to access animal pools, exhibits, and enclosures.
Must be a strong swimmer, with the ability to pass departmental swim test.
Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, or irregular hours dictated by facility or animal needs.

The position requires a minimum of a high school diploma and three years of animal handling experience or Associates Degree and 2 years of animal handling experience or Bachelor's degree and 1 year of animal handling experience. Must be able to assume responsibility, work independently, without close supervision, and cooperatively with other animal care technicians. Must be able to carefully follow set procedures as dictated by the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Animals, the Animal Welfare Act and guidelines established by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care. The hours for the Veterinary Technician Mid-shift ICU position are typically between 12:00pm-10:30pm - Monday through Thursday but may change depending on clinic needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Admit patients to the Intensive Care Unit for hospitalization utilizing electronic records and treatment sheets
* Monitor physical conditions, wounds, and medical diseases of hospitalized patients including pain assessments, ensuring patients remain in stable condition
* Provide basic life support and advanced life support to critical care patients
* Assist with emergency medical care for critical patients under supervision of the attending veterinarian
* Use independent judgement to determine appropriate medical care to stabilize patients when attending veterinarian is not present
* Set up equipment and supplies correctly for hospitalization, treatments, and procedures
* Act as the primary care giver for ICU patients during the mid shift by completing the following duties under limited supervision:
* Take and record TPR at frequent intervals
* Complete calculations for proper dilutions of medications and fluid therapy management including opioids and other controlled drugs
* Administer medications and fluid therapy in accordance with timed treatments
* Restrain animals in a humane manner to minimize pain and stress
* Assist with anesthesia administration and monitoring
* Responsible for radiography, venipuncture, catheter placement and bandage changes
* Feed and exercise hospitalized animals as directed
* Work with veterinary students to create accurate hospitalization and treatment forms and estimates
* Ensure correct charges are entered in practice management software daily
* Assist veterinarians in running of routine and emergency lab samples
* Communicate with the veterinarian on duty and veterinary students on medical cases
* Recordkeeping - Adding appropriate patient notes into electronic medical record.
* Follow protocols in working with patients with infectious diseases
* Be the advocate for all patients in the Intensive Care Unit
* Discharge patients from the clinic
* Assist in instructional support of students in conjunction with the faculty during discussions and treatments
* Process laundry/linen as needed to always assure adequate and neat supply
* Maintain equipment and inventory in the department
