This classification performs medical assistance by administering injections and medication; post-operative observation; administering medical treatments and monitoring the health and care of impounded animals in a shelter facility; medical testing and test results interpretation, inventory control and security of drugs; laboratory work and related clerical duties. Directs sanitation and feeding protocols, determines whether animals are treated or euthanized as a last resort. This position reports to the Shelter Veterinarian and is responsible for implementing all medical protocols as directed by the Shelter Veterinarian.
Working Conditions
Indoor/outdoor environment. High noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting objects and animals up to 50lbs.alone; up to 100 lbs. with assistance.

Essential Functions

Safely and humanely handle, restrain, and treat animals of various species, sizes, and temperaments.
Perform pre-surgical examinations, including physical assessments, diagnostic testing (e.g., fecal analysis, radiographs, blood work), vaccination updates, and animal histories.
Conduct pre- and post-surgical observations, document changes in condition, and maintain complete and detailed medical and surgical records.
Assist in the humane euthanasia of sick, injured, or unadoptable animals in accordance with established veterinary procedures and state regulations.
Maintain accurate records and ensure the security and control of federally restricted drugs and barbiturates in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and procedures.
Properly handle and dispose of biohazardous waste in accordance with safety and environmental regulations.
Oversee and ensure proper sanitation, feeding, and care protocols are followed throughout the shelter.
Establish and maintain courteous, professional, and effective working relationships with co-workers, volunteers, partner organizations, and the public.
Serve as the primary liaison between the Shelter Veterinarian, Medical Director, and Animal Services Chief to ensure consistent communication and operational coordination.
May serve as Animal Care Supervisor as assigned by the division Chief and assist with staff oversight and training.
May transport animals to contracted veterinarians, partner shelters, or other approved destinations as needed.
Performs other related work (including weather or extreme emergency duties) as required.
Associate's degree in veterinary technology, or two (2) years' experience in private veterinary or shelter medicine practice assisting in surgery, medical treatments and performing diagnostic procedures.

What you get to do:
* Assist Veterinary Hospital Teams with animal health programs pertaining to preventative medicine and animal welfare. Assist with our Rescue efforts to ensure successful
* rehabilitation leading to releasing patients, with clean bill of health, back into the wild.
* Coordinate animal exams/procedures, medical treatment, and routine sample collection.
* Collect, transport, and process samples while maintaining clear records. Prepare samples for analyses in, but not limited to, hematology, chemistry, microbiology, mycology, parasitology, urinalysis, cytology and research projects.
* Assist with medical data entry into our electronic animal medical records system (TRACKS).
* Maintain pharmacy. Dispense vitamins, meds and other supplies as requested. Perform inventories on a regular basis and communicate with Hospital Manager to restock as needed.
* Assist with maintenance of surgery and treatment rooms, anesthesia equipment, medical equipment, and supplies. Prepare and assist with triage, diagnostic imaging, and procedures.
* Apply comparative veterinary technical skills to diverse collection of animals (cetaceans, pinnipeds, small mammals, elasmobranchs, fish, reptiles, avian, amphibians, invertebrates, etc.).
* Assist and participate in other related duties as assigned.
What it takes to succeed:
* At least 18 years of age and must have valid state driver's license.
* At least two years of Veterinary experience required. Animal or aquatic animal care experience preferred.
* Available to work weekends and holidays. Willingness to work evenings in the, rare, event of an emergency, procedure, or animal care need.
* Medical procedures require standing, walking, using hands, listening, talking, smell and colored vision.
* Able to stand for prolonged periods of time. Able to work outdoors, indoors, as well as in or around refrigeration and freezer units which create moderate noise.
* Ability to move patient and equipment, therefore must be able to lift and move 25+ lb at times.
* Maintaining records, computer data entry, dispensing pharmaceuticals, vitamins, and ordering supplies require a detail-oriented person able to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
* Basic computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft applications, spreadsheets and databases, including digital medical records (TRACKS).
* Able to work with limited exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and radiation. Protective equipment is provided when necessary.
* Able to positively interact with park guests and co-workers of all ages, different ethnic/cultural backgrounds and/or language, and individuals with special needs.
* Enthusiastically represents SeaWorld by displaying a positive attitude, exemplifying, highly organized, detailed-oriented time-management skills with high level of energy and commitment to quality throughout all aspects of the job.
What else is important:
* State Veterinary Technician certification, or eligible to acquire certification within one year is required
* AVMA accredited associate degree in Veterinary fields or state registration as a veterinary technician (state-specific)
* Minimum of 2 years work experience as a Veterinary Technician in a zoological facility preferred

What You'll Do:
The Shelter Medical department is looking for experienced Veterinary Technicians to provide hands-on medical care and treatment for the dogs and cats in our shelter, assisting veterinarians in exams, diagnostics, and surgery. This role is ideal for individuals with prior veterinary technician experience especially those with prior experience in a fast-paced shelter environment
Assist veterinarians in exams, diagnostics, surgeries, and dentals
Prepare patients for surgery, monitor anesthesia, and provide post-op care
Administer treatments and vaccinations, and track patient records in ShelterLuv
Support lifesaving programs like TNVR and Community Cat initiatives
Help manage intake, foster support, and ensure high standards of animal care

Requirements
What We're Looking For:
At least 2 years of experience as a Veterinary Assistant
Strong animal handling and restraint skills (including for feral cats and dogs)
Detail-oriented and dedicated to following medical treatment plans
Ability to identify signs of illness, disease, or injury in shelter animals.
Basic knowledge of shelter medicine principles, disease prevention, and quarantine protocols.
(On-the-job training provided, if needed.)
Emotionally resilient and passionate about shelter medicine
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Fear Free Certification or willingness to obtain (we'll help!)
Bonus points for shelter experience and ShelterLuv familiarity
