To perform the necessary duties to provide quality care to all animals utilized in research including animal husbandry activities such as feeding, watering, sanitation, observation, and room cleaning. Provides assistance to the veterinary technologist in the care and treatment of laboratory animals. Treats routine small animal health issues such as application of topical medication for skin issues, trims nails, treats malocclusion, provides nutritional and environmental support. Receives, identifies, places incoming rodents (including quarantine), and ships/exports rodents. Monitors rodents with non-life threatening conditions such as prolapsed rectums, neurological deficiencies, malocclusion, etc. May irradiate rodent and cells, conduct parasite testing, provide anesthetic monitoring, operate laboratory equipment, assist in preparing large animals for surgery, and preparing surgical packs. Records entries on animal records, maintenance of rodent health care database and corresponding with principle investigators and research technicians via telephone or e-mail. Processes animal census data and enters into systems for record keeping and revenue billing. Orders and inventories supplies. Recommends ways to improve current procedures or processes to simplify or make them more efficient or more effective. Additional duties may be assigned as the required to fulfill departmental responsibilities.
The position requires a minimum of a high school diploma and three years of animal handling experience

Associates Degree and 2 years of animal handling experience
or
Bachelor's degree and 1 year of animal handling experience.
Must be able to assume responsibility, work independently, without close supervision, and cooperatively with other animal care technicians. Must be able to carefully follow set procedures as dictated by the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Animals, the Animal Welfare Act and guidelines established by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care. Must have above average manual dexterity, stand on feet more than 50% of the time, be able to lift 50 pounds, bend or squat routinely, and work with arms above shoulder level.Incumbent is required to be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or higher or have graduated Veterinary Technician/Technologist. Incumbent is required to obtain Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification within one year or as soon as eligible if greater than one year of experience is required to meet LAT eligibility criteria.

Nature of Supervision:
In all activities related to the care of individual patients, the Veterinarian will take direct supervision from the Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director. The Veterinarian has discretion related to decisions regarding patient care, however, it is imperative that the Veterinarian uphold the standards set forth in the Petco Veterinary SOPs. The Veterinarian should expect to receive direction and guidance based on electronic medical record review from the Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director regarding patient decisions and should accept such feedback as a means to elevate patient care in the hospital.
All hospital veterinarians should work together in a collegial fashion and are expected to behave in a professional and personable manner.
Planning and Problem Solving:
Problem solving is at the heart of veterinary medicine, and it is expected that any successful candidate will possess excellent problem-solving skills that allow expeditious diagnosis of patient problems.
Impact:
This position will impact the organization by contributing to the growth of a productive practice while focusing on a high-quality standard of care. From an overall hospital organizational standpoint, this position is critical to ensuring that we have a cohesive, well-trained, and motivated team. Supervisory Responsibility:
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, however, as stated above the Veterinarian is a de facto leader in the hospital.
Education/Experience
* Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.
* Active licensure as a veterinarian without contingencies in the state in which the hospital is located or ability to obtain by start date.
* Current DEA license.
* Current Controlled Substance License, if applicable, in state in which the hospital is located or ability to obtain by start date.
* USDA Category I (minimum) Accreditation or completion within two months of hire date.
* Must be comfortable performing anesthesia and routine surgeries including but not limited to: canine and feline spays, neuters, mass removals, and dentals.
* Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Must be compassionate and sympathetic, and be able to maintain a professional attitude and demeanor during emotional and stressful situations.
* Must have telephone and computer skills.
* Must be a team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments, offer creative ideas, and accept change.
Work Environment:
The majority of job duties are conducted in the Vetco Total Care veterinary full-service hospital. Position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds, as necessary), and standing for long periods of time. A large amount of this partner's time will be spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.

Records entries on animal records, maintenance of rodent health care database and corresponding with principle investigators and research technicians via telephone or e-mail. Processes animal census data and enters into systems for record keeping and revenue billing. Orders and inventories supplies. Recommends ways to improve current procedures or processes to simplify or make them more efficient or more effective. Additional duties may be assigned as the required to fulfill departmental responsibilities.
The position requires a minimum of a high school diploma and three years of animal handling experience

Must be able to assume responsibility, work independently, without close supervision, and cooperatively with other animal care technicians. Must be able to carefully follow set procedures as dictated by the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Animals, the Animal Welfare Act and guidelines established by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care. Must have above average manual dexterity, stand on feet more than 50% of the time, be able to lift 50 pounds, bend or squat routinely, and work with arms above shoulder level.Incumbent is required to be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or higher or have graduated Veterinary Technician/Technologist. Incumbent is required to obtain Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification within one year or as soon as eligible if greater than one year of experience is required to meet LAT eligibility criteria.

* Maintains an orderly environment that facilitates access to supplies, equipment, and resource information. Assists in the inventory, monitoring and ordering supplies and medical equipment to maintain par levels. Minimizes the overuse of supplies and reports low supply inventories as they arise; does not waste supplies.
* Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks, minimizing incidental overtime. Performs tasks timely to meet department turn-around-times. Utilizes time between heavy workloads efficiently and helps other team members and performing additional tasks.
