The purpose of this Veterinarian Technician position inherently involves providing excellent veterinary care to our Vetco Total Care full-service hospital patients and phenomenal customer care to their owners. * Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, safely support induction and monitoring of anesthetized patients including checking and recording vital parameters (under direction of the veterinarian), monitor patients during recovery, and prepare them for discharge to owner or transfer to an overnight care facility as needed.
* Provide in-hospital treatments for sick patients including giving injectable and oral medications as well as intravenous therapies; keep patients clean, watered, and fed (when indicated and directed by veterinarian), and safely walk canine patients when necessary for elimination.
* Participate in the training of new staff members and general dissemination of knowledge as required.
* Keep hospital environment neat and clean; perform regular cleaning of environment based on necessity as well as based on a pre-determined maintenance schedule.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
* Perform additional duties as assigned.
* Provide backup phone and front desk support as needed.
Nature of Supervision:
In all activities related to the care of patients, the Veterinary Technician will take direct supervision from the veterinarians as well as the Hospital Office Manager or Hospital Leader on Duty. For purposes of overall supervision, the Veterinary Technician takes direction from the Hospital Office Manager.
Planning and Problem Solving:
Like all team members, the Veterinary Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring that day-to-day operation of the hospital is efficient and provides an optimal experience for our patients and clients.

Education/Experience:

Responsibilities
Veterinary Technicians at PESCM are responsible for a variety of tasks related to customer service and patient care within the veterinary practice. In addition to veterinary technician skills such as patient restraint, administering medications, IV catheter placement, and phlebotomy, technicians in the Emergency department will be responsible for the following:
Set up CRIs and calculate medical math
Place indwelling urinary catheters
Place jugular catheters

Prepare and administer transfusions: Blood and Plasma

Take radiographs (out of the room!) and obtain and prepare various blood samples for diagnostic testing

Provide client education on a wide range of at home care
About You
RVT preferred but 2 years' experience minimum necessary
Comprehensive understanding and experience with anesthetic monitoring
Proficiency in processing basic laboratory specimens
Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology
Understanding of normal vs abnormal physiologic ranges
Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment and commitment to develop long-term relationships with colleagues, clients, and community
Positive outlook and ability to work well in a collaborative environment.

Overview
The Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) cares for and treats shelter and privately owned animals in our state-of-the art medical center, which cares for over 7,000 homeless pets and performs over 8,800 surgeries each year. This individual is scheduled for an alternative work week consisting of two to four 10-hour days. Schedule may include duties in onsite spay neuter/vaccine clinic, in-house shelter medicine, or mobile spay/neuter and wellness clinics.
Duties and Responsibilities
Be a member of a high performing team comprised of Veterinary Assistants, RVTs, Veterinarians, and volunteers to provide the highest standard of care to animals.
Under direct supervision of a DVM: induce anesthesia for patients undergoing spay neuter and other surgical procedures; apply casts and splints; perform dental extractions; suture wounds and dental sites; perform cut- backs for IV catheters; and provide excellent care to all animals.
Identify symptoms of common animal illnesses; administer medications (including controlled substances), vaccinations, and preventative treatments; perform diagnostic tests; and triage new shelter intakes.
Perform euthanasia procedures on sick and injured animals.
Participate in medical examinations and various soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries.
Prepare daily surgery medications and treatments; maintain controlled drug logs and medical records; and manage the daily flow of surgical patients to ensure timeliness and efficiency.
Perform full-body and dental x-rays.
Complete standing orders for medical treatment per established protocols.
Triage patients requiring medical attention, including the use of telehealth technology.
Ensure surgical and treatment areas are clean and well-stocked; maintain a safe and sanitary environment at all times. Use Fear Free animal handling techniques, restrain animals for surgery and/or procedures.
Discharge surgical patients and provide excellent customer care and client communications.
Ensure prompt and accurate data entry and paperwork procedures are followed each day.
Adhere to HSSVs safety, disinfection, and animal care protocols.
Maintain a professional and collaborative attitude when working with co-workers, or cross-functionally with staff in other departments.

Hours are flexible and based on organizational needs. Depending on staffing needs, overtime may be required. Because of the need to care for animals onsite 7 days a week, positions require working at least one weekend day.
