The purpose of this position is to assist the RVT Tech 1's in the surgery department to ensure that all clients and patients are cared for with efficiency, compassion, and care. The primary focus of the Tech 2 will be client communication, schedule efficiency, and assisting with patient surgery and recovery.
MAJOR DUTIES
Surgery days
Review surgery schedule in Cornerstone the day before and discuss flow of patient load with Tech 1. Determine the order of patients and how dismissals and appointments will be scheduled.
Update surgery board with surgery coordinator; ensure surgery coordinator knows the order of patient surgery; alert surgery coordinator of any client communication that needs to happen before, during, or after surgery
Immediately upon arrival, round with ICU technician on any surgery patients in ICU with the goal of updating DVM when they arrive for the day;
Immediately upon arrival, determine any dismissals for the day; review dismissal instructions with DVM to ensure no changes are needed; ensure medications are made up and ready to go; ensure appropriate dismissal appointment is scheduled in Cornerstone and matches surgery dismissal board
Set up surgery suite for first surgery before induction; ensure all necessary instrumentation is present and set up, including arthroscopy, laparoscopy, ortho packs, laptop, and digital radiology computer; if rDVM films are necessary, ensure that they are loaded and ready to go for surgery
Assist Tech 1 with patient prep; must be able to place IV catheters, perform peripheral venipuncture; give SQ and IM injections of pain meds/ pre-meds
Must be able to perform drug dosage calculations (must be signed off by Tech 1)
Assist doctor with surgical procedures (Scrub nurse); ability to monitor Grade 1 and 2 patients safely during anesthesia(must be checked off by Tech 1)

Assist doctors with consultations; educate and answer client questions regarding surgery and aftercare of patients
Assist with radiographs, labs, etc during exam
Use travel sheet to enter all exam charges
Schedule next recheck appointment with client before they leave the hospital if possible- this can be done in the exam room
Walk client to front desk
Clean room and make ready for next appointment
Other duties
Clean and sterilize all instruments, gloves, drapes and equipment used, so that it will be ready the next time they are needed.
Keep log of all surgeries done
Take surgery department inventory on a bi-weekly basis and provide list to inventory manager
Review sterilization dates on bone instruments and orthopedic implants and inventory/ re-sterilize as needed
Maintain all anesthetic machines, autoclave, and any other equipment used in surgery
Thoroughly clean surgery room and area weekly
Knowledge and Skills
The qualified applicant will possess the following knowledge and skills:
Required
Knowledge of basic veterinary practices, procedures and terminology with willingness to pursue further education leading to Registered Veterinary Technician status
Ability to appropriately handle animals up to 70 lbs., and perform routine veterinary medical procedures (i.e. collect samples, draw blood, administer vaccines, etc)
Education equivalent to two years of college or technical school
At least one year of recent experience in veterinary practice or medical environment with increasing responsibilities
Internal applicants must have a meets expectation or better in their current position and approval of current supervisor prior to applying for position

Position Overview
* The veterinary assistant provides support to the veterinarians and technicians in their daily tasks by cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising and grooming patients, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, and clerical and administrative work. * Fill prescriptions, calculate and administer medications, maintain proper documentation, logging, and security of controlled drugs.
* Feed patients as prescribed by the attending doctor or as the client has requested; record appetites; recognize and report any unusual conditions or abnormal behaviors
* Communicate in a positive manner with clients and ensure that they feel comfortable leaving their pet(s)
* Educate clients about insurance, wellness, and medicinal plans
* Maintain the cleanliness of the hospital each day; clean equipment, kennels, and facilities using chemicals and supplies; ensure the safe use of chemicals; complete laundry
* Bath and care for patients who stay overnight; ensure that every animal released is clean and properly groomed prior to their release
* Adhere to the hospital's safety and wellness regulations
* Understand and carry out oral and written directions

Definition
Under general direction, provides paraprofessional medical care and treatment to animals; assists a veterinarian with medical and surgical pre-operative and post-operative procedures; monitors general health of animal population at the shelter; administers medication, emergency treatment, first aid, and follow up care; provides lead supervision to animal services staff and volunteers; performs related duties as required.
Class Characteristics
This is an advanced journey level classification reporting to the Animal Services Manager in the Animal Services Section of the Police Department. Assignments, objectives, and work methods are established by policy and procedure and incumbents assume responsibility for accomplishing work within those parameters. Work review is not continual but is conducted periodically; checks are integrated into work processes. The incumbent of this classification will work in the animal shelter office and the shelter's animal care area. Assigned duties require extensive use of the medical care equipment; moving and handling domestic animals and wildlife.
Essential Functions
* Evaluate animals for gender, medical conditions, age, dental condition, temperament, and breed.
* Record and maintain health and temperament information on all animals for adoption.

Position Overview
As an Operations Specialist in Animal Care, your role will be to ensure that proper animal care and husbandry is being provided for all companion animals and aquatic life in the Pet Care Center (PCC). You'll be the primary resource regarding animal care and maintenance. This position will support the achievement of the PCC's budgeted sales and shrink goals. You'll ensure our merchandising and inventory strategies are executed across the Pet Care Center with your primary focus in companion animals and aquatic life. You will ensure the efficient and effective operations of the Pet Care Center in close partnership with the sales team to meet the needs of the guest and their pet/s. You can excel in this role by exhibiting a passion for the welfare, health, and proper care of animals as well as being a positive partner within the whole Pet Care Center team.
Position Responsibilities

Basic Qualifications
Minimum of one year of experience working with and/or caring for companion animals and aquatic life is required for this position. Qualified applicants will possess a high level of knowledge of companion animals and aquatic life and an aptitude for sales techniques. In addition to having a professional appearance and demeanor, applicants must also demonstrate a keen and genuine interest in animals and their care. Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills are necessary due to the nature of interaction with the public and other partners and leaders within the PCC as well as external veterinary partners.
Certification
Completing and maintaining of the Petco Animal Care Certification program is required in this role.
Education/Skills
In addition to a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED), an applicant must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the areas of mathematics and basic accounting relationships and exhibit exceptional communication skills.
Supervisory Responsibility
* Ensures that the Pet Care Center is opened and / or closed in accordance with established P&Ps as it applies to SFS operations.
* Adhere to and promote established safety procedures for partners, guests, and pets.
Work Environment
The majority of job duties are conducted indoors, although guest carryouts and veterinary visits will require that a partner leave the PCC briefly. Because this position requires bending, kneeling, moving merchandise (up to 50 pounds, as necessary) and standing for long periods of time, there may be risk of injury resulting from not following procedures. Ability and willingness to a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends to meet PCC needs.
