Shift Details:
Every other Saturday and Sunday, 8am-8pm.
Westfield Veterinary Hospital (WVH) is a full service veterinary clinic. We can take care of virtually all your pet's needs in one comfortable, professional setting - anything from a nail trim to some of the most advanced diagnostic and surgical procedures available. WVH also offers many of the day-to-day products that you use with your pet. If we do not carry an item you are looking for, we will do our best to either get it for you or tell you where you can find it!

The Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) supports the operation of an animal hospital by providing medical care to patients in accordance with veterinary practice regulations. The RVT guides and trains medical support staff, ensures smooth workflow during shifts, and communicates effectively with team members and clients.
Responsibilities
Deliver patient care under the supervision of a veterinarian (DVM). Maintain clear and accurate medical, client, and case records using appropriate terminology and grammar. Review medical records, treatment estimates, and discharge instructions with clients, and respond to basic animal care inquiries, escalating medical questions to veterinarians as needed. Guide and support medical support staff to ensure efficient shift operations and workflow. Mentor team members to encourage career growth and personal development. Provide input for 360-degree performance evaluations of employees. Assist with client services including appointment scheduling, payments, check-in, and courteous phone communication. Provide feedback and suggest improvements to training programs; participate in training sessions, job shadows, and working interviews. Perform assigned cleaning, clinic upkeep, and equipment maintenance tasks. Delegate cleaning or other duties during slow periods when a supervisor is unavailable. Identify and address areas needing additional attention within the clinic environment. Answer client inquiries confidently about routine procedures and animal care.Communicate effectively with team members and clients to support patient care and hospital operations. Perform other related duties as assigned within the nature and level of work.
Qualifications
* High school diploma or equivalent.
* Graduate of an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technician program.
* Current state veterinary technician license in good standing.
* One year of experience in the veterinary industry is preferred.
* Proficiency in a range of technical skills including laboratory procedures, pharmacy, radiology, surgery, dental care, and nursing.
* Ability to administer subcutaneous (SQ), intramuscular (IM), and intravenous (IV) injections.
* Knowledge of commonly used veterinary medications including dosage, side effects, and client communication.
* Understanding of anesthesia and patient recovery monitoring, with the ability to recognize and report changes in patient status.
* Ability to remain calm and efficient in stressful or fast-paced environments, including medical emergencies.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.
* Comfort and confidence in handling animals of all sizes and temperaments.
Physical Requirements
* Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb.
* Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds independently, and over 50 pounds with assistance.
* Capacity to sit, stand, and walk on hard surfaces for extended periods.
* Ability to work in noisy environments with sounds from animals and medical equipment.
* Routine exposure to animals that may bite or scratch.
* Occasional exposure to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medications/controlled substances.
* Adequate hearing to understand verbal instructions and client communication.
* Vision capabilities include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
* Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to operate medical equipment and computer systems.

Our medical team includes:
Dr. Christine Wauhob, a 1998 graduate of Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, has been with the practice since 2005. She works part-time with a strong focus on oncology, pathology, and internal medicine. Dr. Christine is known for her thorough diagnostic work-ups and does not perform surgical procedures.
Dr. Emily Gearig, a 2011 graduate of Iowa State University, joined our practice in July 2023 and became managing DVM in October 2023. With 12 years of mixed animal experience in Ohio, Dr. Emily brings a wide skill set, including certification in Veterinary Spinal Manipulative Therapy (chiropractic care) since 2018. She also provides laser therapy, soft tissue surgery, dental/oral surgery, and ultrasound.
Dr. Adam Steffensmeier, a 2025 graduate of Iowa State University, is the newest addition to our team, bringing fresh knowledge and enthusiasm to our practice.

The Veterinary Technician performs a critical role in providing high quality care for patients. Technicians are key partners to the veterinarians, providing the appropriate support to ensure each client interaction and procedure is seamless and successful. Technicians apply their professional skills in anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, laboratory testing, patient nursing, and client education.

Essential Responsibilities
Assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery and other tasks as needed.
Assist veterinarians in outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs, and weights, as well as providing client education.
Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vital signs of the patient during surgery.
Obtain blood, stool, and other samples; perform in-hospital laboratory testing and prepare specimens for outside laboratories.
Take, develop, and maintain radiographs following proper safety procedures.
Provide basic animal handling and restrain animals during exams.
Administer and monitor medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments at the discretion of the veterinarian.
Clean and straighten exam rooms, treatment, and lab areas; restock exam rooms with supplies. Assist other team members to keep the public areas of the practice clean; clean and maintain all medical equipment.
Demonstrate warmth, courtesy and professionalism in all interactions with clients; exercise compassion and care in all interactions with patients.
Communicate with veterinarians and practice team members including client discussions, patient plans, client concerns, etc.
Any other duties as assigned.

Position Overview
The Veterinary Technician / Assistant supports hospital operations by providing dedicated quality veterinary care and exceptional service to our patients and clients. Qualifications (Required)
* High school diploma or GED.
* At least 1 year of small animal experience is required

* Ability to demonstrate and follow correct procedures in catheter placement, phlebotomy, emergency medicine, and digital radiology.
* Understand and limit the potential exposure to bites, scratches, and potential injuries.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Assists with basic nursing care on American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status classification level I and II patients, which are considered healthy or with mild systemic disease. Nursing care to include but not limited to: monitoring body functions (temperature, respiration, heartbeat, amount and frequency of food consumptions, defecation, urination etc.) and noting abnormalities; placing and maintaining intravenous catheters; administering fluids and medications orally, parenterally, and enterally; and performing other basic treatments.
• Collects and processes samples for research, diagnostic, and clinical purposes.
• Assists with basic preparatory procedures on various animal species and assists staff members in surgical, medical, or laboratory procedure preparation, including instrument and supply set up.

To apply a patient-centered approach while performing treatments, making patient assessments, and all other aspects of patient care. This role will promote learning and growth as an emergency veterinary technician, providing opportunities for advancement towards a Veterinary Technician Specialist certification and participating in the coordination of care. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO DO
All clinical team members:
Treat each patient and customer with the highest level of compassion & care.
Perform basic to intermediate nursing care tasks, patient monitoring, and treatments.
Use understanding of common diseases and conditions, physical assessment, and monitoring parameters to accurately triage incoming patients.
Administer subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous medications and understand potential adverse effects of medications.
Set-up, monitor, and administer intravenous fluid therapy including constant rate infusions and blood transfusion therapy.
Contribute to incoming outpatient care and ongoing inpatient care.
Participate in giving and receiving patient rounds to ensure continuity of care.
Be trained to properly perform all aspects of CPR as a RECOVER Certified Rescuer.
Collect samples and perform diagnostic tests including in-house & point-of-care tests and diagnostic imaging.
Perform nursing care tasks such as placing and/or maintaining urinary catheters, nasoenteral tubes, nasal oxygen tubes, chest and abdominal tubes.
Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot oxygen cages and other oxygen administration techniques.
Veterinary technicians additionally perform:
Administer, monitor, and maintain patients under general anesthesia with or without mechanical ventilation for patients with varied levels of risk.
Perform advanced vascular access techniques including jugular catheter placement, sampling line placement, central line placement, intraosseous catheterization, and arterial catheterization.
Perform advanced diagnostic techniques including ultrasonography and paracentesis,
Participate in formulating treatment, anesthetic, and nursing care plans.
Conduct treatments using clinical decision-making skills according to protocolized plans.
Aid in managing patient care workload to ensure the patients are receiving uncompromised care.
Coach and guide veterinary assistants and veterinary nurses to perform clinical tasks to maintain standards of care and encourage growth.
Collaborate and share knowledge with teammates to ensure optimal patient care.
Obtain additional training along guided growth pathways offering roles in addition to direct nursing care such as VTS certification, trainer role, coordination of care, community outreach, and leadership.
WHAT YOU NEED
High school diploma or equivalent
Credentialed as a veterinary technician (CVT, RVT, LVT, LVMT) in the location of the VEG practice.
Veterinary technician specialist (VTS) certification will receive additional considerations in practice role and compensation.
Basic computer skills to use practice management, electronic medical record, and collaboration software.
1+ years of experience in a veterinary technician role. Experience in emergency or specialty medicine preferred.
Excellent communication skills (written, verbal and electronic) with the team and with customers
Fine motor skills adequate for utilizing hospital equipment necessary daily such as syringes, electric clippers, computers, surgery instruments, monitors, diagnostic equipment, etc.
Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, work on the floor as well as ability to lift up to 25 kg on own and able to support up to 40 kg with assistance.

What You'll Do:
* Educate and support veterinary students (VM1-VM4) in teaching laboratories, assisting with animal evaluation and case management.
* Deliver technical assistance and patient care, including sedation, monitoring, and wellness care for shelter animals.
* Demonstrate clinical and laboratory skills, such as anesthesia, dentistry, urinalysis, bloodwork, and parasitology.

Under the direction and supervision of a licensed Veterinarian, provides advanced care for ill and injured animal patients or animals used in a research or hospital setting. Instructs and demonstrates veterinary care, animal husbandry, and technical skills to students and Veterinary Technician I. Provides assistance to fourth-year veterinary students, Veterinarians, and investigative staff in their treatment of animals, teaching, or research functions. May exercise some control over the continual work product of others within assigned service. Position operates independently in performing the full scope of advanced care. Provides mentorship and guidance to Veterinary Technician I. Guidance and mentorship can be provided by Veterinary Technician III.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
* Assists with the instruction and evaluation of veterinary and veterinary technology students and Veterinary Technician level I. In a clinical or classroom setting provides demonstrations of advanced skill level in areas such as proper medical record keeping, animal restraint, phlebotomy, intravenous and urinary catheterization, fluid therapy, aseptic technique, anesthetic monitoring of American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status classification system, level I-III and postoperative care.
* Responsible for providing advanced nursing care on ASA I-III patients which are considered to be healthy, have mild, or severe systemic disease that is a consistent threat to life. Nursing care to include but not limited to: placing and maintaining intravenous, urinary, and arterial catheters, central lines, nasogastric tubes, and nasal oxygen; administering fluids and medications orally, parenterally, and enterally; utilizing blood products; performing arterial sampling, tracheostomy care, and other advanced treatments.
* Collects, analyzes, and processes samples for research, diagnostic, and clinical purposes. Monitors the patient's condition and effectiveness of medications.
* Performs advanced preparatory procedures on various animal species and assists staff members in surgical, medical and laboratory procedure preparation (such as phacoemulsification, endoscopy, blood cultures, pericardiocentesis, and arthrocentesis etc.), including instrument and supply set up.
* Administers anesthesia and monitors patient response through the recovery period for ASA I-III patients; maintains anesthetic and mechanical monitoring equipment.
* Maintains orderly and sanitary work areas for clinical, teaching, and research facilities.
* Monitors effectiveness of autoclaves.
* Stocks and organizes patient exam rooms, treatment areas, holding areas and operating rooms.
* May determine and enters hospital charges and medical records into the computer to create accurate records for billing accounts and evaluate charges to ensure hospital costs are accurately captured.
* Responsible for set up, inventory, maintenance, security, and repairs for equipment and instruments used in surgical procedures, emergencies and/or lab sessions. Monitors the effectiveness of environmental sanitation programs. Monitors and reports aberrations in environmental systems as they relate to animal and public health.
* Assists in drafting and evaluation of reports of institutional programs (i.e., postoperative care, anesthesia monitoring, facility maintenance, etc.).
* Utilizes ultrasound machines and x-rays, assist with MRI, or other related imaging equipment for patient diagnostics
