Vicon Industries company history timeline

1967

Vicon Industries was started in 1967 by Donald M. Horn, an engineer, in a Long Island garage.

1979

Net income also grew each year in this period, increasing reaching $736,000 in 1979.

1980

1980-89 In the ’80s, the early adopters such as University of Strathclyde, University of Western Australia, Saitama Rehabilitation Center in Japan, and the University of West Virginia, began testing the limits of the early Vicon systems.

1982

With the United States economy in recession, net income declined for the first time in 11 years during fiscal 1982.

1983

By mid-1983, Vicon Industries had raised its share of the CCTV accessories market to 35 percent.

1984

The system was manufactured by a subsidiary of Oxford Instruments, called Oxford Medical Systems (later Oxford Dynamics). Following a management buyout in 1984, Oxford Dynamics became Oxford Metrics and the 35 year history of Vicon began.

The recognised leader since 1984, our name is synonymous with motion capture.

1986

Vicon's troubles attracted a hostile takeover attempt in 1986 by Sensormatic Electronics Corp., which offered $17.6 million for its common stock.

1987

The expansion of Vicon Industries' product line, at a cost of $2 million, eroded earnings, and in 1987 the company lost Burle Industries, Inc. (formerly RCA Corp.) as its principal customer.

1988

As a consequence of this connection, the company's sales abroad reached 26 percent of its total revenue in fiscal 1988.

1989

By late 1989 this company had raised its stake in Vicon to 14.9 percent and received the exclusive right to sell Vicon's products in Japan.

1990

1990-99 As interest in motion capture grew, new markets began emerging, most notably was the rapid development of the entertainment industry.

1997

One-third of Vicon's revenue in fiscal 1997 came from exports, principally to Europe and East Asia.

1999

The company's replenished coffers also enabled it to acquire TeleSite, United StatesA., Inc., a designer, producer, and seller of remote video surveillance systems, in 1999 for $2.1 million.

2003

In 2003, Sony Pictures Imageworks was the first studio to use over 200 Vicon cameras for Monster House.

2009

Over this period, the Vicon customer base grew from under 1000 at the beginning of the decade, to 3500 by 2009.

In 2009, the Bonita line of cameras made affordable, high-quality motion capture accessible to everyone, and was Vicon’s fastest selling camera.

2010

2010-16 The past six years have been incredible – we’ve launched the first ever reference video camera for motion capture, our industry renowned real-time software, Blade 2, and our award-winning head mounted 3D facial capture and tracking system, Cara.

2012

Her road to becoming CEO in 2012 has taken her through Sales, Support, Manufacturing, and General Management.

2015

The T160 remained the world’s only 16MP motion capture camera until replaced in 2015 by the Vantage V16
