Under the Clinical Supervision of the Medical Director of Respiratory Care and the overall supervision of the Manager, Assistant Manager and Respiratory Care Supervisor the Respiratory CarePractitioner (RCP), II functions in a safe, expedient, and cost-effective manner in providing, responding to patient needs and documenting respiratory care and services provided. The Respiratory CarePractitioner II is involved in the Clinical Ladder program which is a voluntary promotion system that recognizes health care professionals who demonstrate advanced knowledge, critical thinking skills, and professional development.
Minimum Requirements
* Associate Degree or higher in an approved COARC program for Respiratory Care.
* Active licensure with the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board upon hire and maintained yearly.
* 3 or more years of Respiratory CarePractitioner experience.
* Basic Life Support (BLS) American Heart Association Certification.
* Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).
* Advanced Life Support Certification (ACLS).
* National Board for Respiratory Care Neonatal/Pediatric Specialty (NBRC NPS) preferred.
* ECU Health Community Hospital positions require BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP.
* ECU Health Children's Hospital positions require Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), and completion of the NBRC NPS certification; with ACLS as optional.
Other Information
Compensation package
* Base pay of up to $75 per hour for all travel respiratory carepractitioner positions
* 1.5x base hourly rate for overtime (over 40 hours), call-back and holidays
* Internal Travel staff are eligible for ECU Health's Partnership Savings Plan-401(k) (non-matched).
Additional position details
* 13-week assignments with option to extend at the discretion of manager
* Travel Staffing Program positions are not eligible for health benefits, shift or weekend differentials, incentive pay, PTO or float pool differentials
* Travel team members are expected to:
* Work alternate shifts as required
* Adhere to required attendance of unit staff meetings, completion of e-inform modules, and completion of required organizational continuing education
* Use the scheduling system to manage their schedule, including non-duty/time-off requests
* Not be currently employed by ECU Health or be separated for 92 days, having left in good standing
* Organizational policies will be applicable to internal travel team members, notwithstanding Travel Staffing Program specifications included within each assignment acknowledgement

Duke Life Flight is a CAMTS accredited critical care and Emergency Air and Ground transport agency in Durham, NC, providing services to North Carolina and its surrounding states. We operate two state-of-the-art rotor wing aircraft and a fleet of critical care, and advanced life support ambulances. We are one of few rotor-wing aeromedical Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) capable flight programs in North Carolina. Our respiratory carepractitioners with our Life Flight team transport pediatric, and neonatal patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We provide rapid access to health care for patients when time, specialized skills, and/or specialized resources are critical for survival.
General Description of the Job Class
Perform and evaluate diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of clinical practice, performing work in accordance with physician orders in the neonatal, pediatric and adult patient populations.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Perform all duties and responsibilities required of a Respiratory CarePractitioner I.
Evaluate appropriateness of medical orders.
Proficient in the application of mechanical ventilator modalities.
Proficient in the application of Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NPPV); Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP)
Perform endotracheal intubation under the observation of a Supervisor or Advanced Practitioner. Perform extubations.
Serve as member of the code/ emergency team. Administer medical gases.
Insert nasogastric and orogastric tubes.
Perform tracheotomy tube changes. Perform capnography monitoring.
Transport patients requiring mechanical ventilation or airway protection.
Interpret clinical data to optimize patient clinical objectives.
Participate in clinical rounds with physicians, nurses and other health care providers
Assist with Bronchoscopy. Assist with orientation and training of Level II RT.
Assure safe operations of devices in the MRI.
Qualified for certification in the hyperbaric chamber if applicable to the institution scope of practice
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
Completion of a two year AMA approved Respiratory Care Program - (Associates Degree or the equivalent).
Must maintain annual skill maintenance and annual safety/compliance requirements
Must maintain North Carolina annual license requirements for CEUs
Experience
A minimum of three years (preference of four years) experience in clinical respiratory therapy, including a minimum of one year in intensive care respiratory therapy within a neonatal or pediatric ICU.
Advanced certification required (C-NPT) within two years of hire. If hired with critical care transport experience, C-NPT or NPS certification highly preferred.

Up to $30K Commitment Incentive Under the Clinical Supervision of the Medical Director of Respiratory Care and the overall supervision of the Manager of Respiratory Care and Respiratory Care Supervisor the Respiratory CarePractitioner (RCP) provides safe, expedient, cost-effective Respiratory Care services. As a member of a team of health care professionals, an RCP evaluates, treats and manages patients of all ages with respiratory illnesses and other cardiopulmonary disorders in a wide variety of clinical settings. Respiratory CarePractitioners behave in a manner consistent with the standards and ethics of all health care professionals. In addition to performing respiratory care procedures, RCP's are involved in clinical decision-making (such as patient assessment, treatment selection and reassessment of treatment efficacy), goal directed respiratory care planning and patient education. RCP's are required to document in the patient medical record factual, accurate, complete, timely, legible and legal information about the care they provide to each patient. Each RCP is responsible for billing the patient correctly for the services provided.
Responsibilities
1. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service appropriate to the age of the patient. Assess the appropriateness of prescribed respiratory care by acquiring and evaluating clinical data and assessing the cardiopulmonary and overall status of the patient based on the age of the patient.
2. Initiates a respiratory care plan upon admission to Respiratory Services identifying primary respiratory problem, goals and interventions. Updates care plan at least once per shift relative to the progress toward the goal.
3. Initiates respiratory care, evaluating and monitoring patients' responses to such care, modifying the prescribed respiratory therapy and cardiopulmonary procedures and life support endeavors to achieve desired therapeutic objectives. Provides and records all patient and family education in patient medical record. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information.
4. Participates in life-support activities as required, responds to Trauma, High Risk Deliveries, and Code Blue emergencies throughout the hospital. Provides therapeutic interventions with oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, airway care, lung expansion, bronchial hygiene, invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation. Provides and assesses information from respiratory parameter studies, peak flow measurements, pulse oximetry monitoring, ABG/VBG/CBG results, capnography, pulmonary mechanics and graphics monitors, hemodynamic monitoring, and cardiac output monitoring. Monitors, provides oxygen and airway support to patients receiving ICD changes.
5. Uses universal precautions appropriately and performs proper handwashing between each patient. Learns and uses Respiratory "Red Rules" and Patient Safety Behaviors to provide safe patient care.
6. Uses department "scripts" to effectively communicate with other departments, patients, families, coworkers and students in person or over the phone.
7. Demonstrates safe operation of all equipment in compliance with department policy, safety, disinfection, infection control and quality control standards. Demonstrates effective computer skills for electronic charting, billing and respiratory order processing.
8. As directed by the supervisor, may have additional responsibility as charge therapist and or preceptor for students and or new employees.
9. Participates in In-Service Education, Patient Rounds and Conferences and maintains 24 hours continuing education credits per year.
Minimum Requirements
* American Heart Association BLS Certification
* Associate Degree or higher in an approved CoARC program for Respiratory Care.
* Active licensure with the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board upon hire and is maintained yearly.
* Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Registry Eligible with RRT credential obtained within 1 year of graduation.
* American Heart Association ACLS, if not current at time of hire, must complete within first 6 months of Employment and maintained.
* If working in the Children's hospital you are required to have AHA PALS and NRP in place of the AHA ACLS and you must have completed the NBRC NPS exam by 12 months from your orientation end date.
* For non-medical center Respiratory care departments, AHA BLS and ACLS are required. AHA PALS and NRP are required at 6 months from hire date.
