1971

The story of Vie de France began in 1971.

1977

Yamazaki moved deeper into the retail segment with the launch of its own convenience store chain in 1977.

1978

In 1978, Vie de France embarked on a project to develop a chain of retail establishments around the country.

1981

1981: Yamazaki founds a Hong Kong subsidiary and opens its first bakery in that market.

1984

The company's next target became Thailand, where it launched a new subsidiary and opened its first bakery in 1984.

1984: Yamazaki enters Thailand with a new subsidiary.

1987

The company then moved to Taiwan, where it opened the first of a network of 16 bakeries in 1987.

1987: Yamazaki enters the Taiwan market.

1990

In 1990, the company expanded its United States base with the acquisition of Ikeda Bakery, in California.

1992

That company was then renamed Yamazaki California in 1992.

1994

Later, on May 27, 1994, Yamazaki Baking also purchased the Vie de France Restaurant division and formed what is today – Vie de France Yamazaki, Inc., the United States subsidiary of Yamazaki Baking Company, Ltd. of Tokyo.

1998

1998: Yamazaki enters Malaysia with the first bakery in Kuala Lumpur.

2000

Yamazaki remained the dominant player in the mature Japanese bread market at the start of the new century, supported by the construction of the company's newest factory, in Saitama, in 2000.

2003

2003: Restructuring restores profitability despite sales slip to ¥722 billion.
