POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for fabrication welding requirements including manual, semi-automatic, automatic and all-position including using oxygen/acetylene gas torch for cutting or pre-heat.

Conduct quality control checks using precision gauges and ensure all work meets NAVSEA standards; inspect finished welds for defects and conformance.
Operate and maintain welding tools and equipment, including manual/semi-automatic systems, hand and power tools, and cutting equipment (e.g., wire feeders, carbon arc rigs, tig rigs, mig/flux core guns CAC-A).
Prepare and align components for welding through layout, measuring, beveling, and fitting while monitoring for distortion or heat-related issues.
Possess and maintain personal tools/equipment necessary to accomplish their trade.
Troubleshoot equipment and material issues, change out wire spools, tips/nozzles or adjust, and notify management when replacements are needed.
Must be proficient at reading and interpreting weld symbols on blueprints and drawings.
Conduct self-inspections to ensure work meets quality standards and complies with applicable drawings and specifications.
Provide guidance and train junior craftsmen, providing direction as a senior mechanic when required.

Certification Requirements
Must be qualified in 3-position SMAW carbon steel plate and 3-position FCAW carbon steel plate.
Hold a carbon arcing qualification, plus one additional SMAW certification (not carbon steel) and one additional FCAW plate certification (not carbon steel).
Hold a SMAW 110-18 6GT Pipe certification, and either a GMAW-P Aluminum certification or 3 SMAW and 3 FCAW pipe/plate certifications.
Experience Requirements
4 - 6 years of experience as a Welder in a shipyard.

SUMMARY:
Welder performs welder operations including MIG and TIG and Spot /Resistance Welding. THIS IS 2ND SHIFT POSITION
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):
Perform functions necessary as prescribed by Work Order and Blueprint.
Interpret Blueprint and set-up equipment so that quality components to specification are produced with minimal input from others.
Perform First Piece inspection as needed.
Set-up Weld Jigs as available. If not available, be able to fixture parts with miscellaneous holding techniques in order to produce a part within specification.
Set-up and adjust MIG, TIG or Spot Welding equipment, and troubleshoot poor quality welds.
Perform post weld grinding operations, so as to achieve a quality straight line finish so that final painted parts will pass Quality Inspections.
Perform welding of seams, joints and fill openings in panels; fitting pieces to assure proper alignment.
Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
Determines required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.
Work on other Fabrication and paint equipment as needed.

* Connects cable from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope and pulse as specified by procedure or supervisor.
* Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.
* Starts power supply to produce electric current.
* Strikes arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work piece.
* Manually guides electrode or gun along weld-line, maintaining length of arc and speed and movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
* May manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal. May clean or degrease weld joint or workplace, using wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath. May repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes. May remove excess weld, defective weld material, slag and spatter, using carbon arc gouge, hand scrapper, grinder or power chipper. May preheat work piece, using hand torch or heating furnace. May cut metal plates or structural shapes.
* Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
* Loads, transports and unloads material, tools, equipment and supplies.
* May assist in lifting, positioning and securing of materials and work pieces during installation.
* Performs minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment.
* Assists other mechanics as needed.
* Respiratory protection is common and may be required.
* Required to pass employer performance tests or standard tests to meet certification standards. Performs only procedures certified in.
