Our Culture
Our culture is anchored in excellence, meaning constant improvement, and it is deeply tied to our mission. Because markets are objective, competitive, and getting smarter everyday, we need to keep rapidly improving to have any chance of beating them. Truth is our most essential tool for engaging with the markets and constantly improving because once you know what's true about your problems and opportunities, you can determine how to get better. Valuing truth means being transparent about your decision-making and mistakes, giving and receiving feedback with humility, and fighting for the best answers over hierarchy, ego, or self-interest. Operating this way is hard - it's only possible because we build meaning in our work and relationships. This meaning comes from the audacity of the mission, and the joy of working alongside people who make you a better version of yourself. The culture, like Bridgewater itself, is always evolving. In 2022, when Ray transitioned the company, we re-underwrote several of those principles and evolved others, with a specific focus on Meritocracy. Today the culture sits, alongside our people, as our most important edge. When we get it right, it's the engine that powers everything else.

In 1997 our founder Ray Dalio wrote down his lessons, starting with a Philosophy Statement which remains our foundation. This later evolved into a set of 300+ Principles. In 2022, when Ray transitioned the company, we re-underwrote several of those principles and evolved others, with a specific focus on Meritocracy. Today the culture sits, alongside our people, as our most important edge. When we get it right, it's the engine that powers everything else.

To this end, Client Service works closely with our clients to help them not only broaden their understanding of the company's investment process and products but also to deepen their understanding of the financial markets more generally. Over and above traditional client service organizations that focus on selling products, Bridgewater's Client Service group operates as an advisor to clients on their entire portfolio, not just the portion under management at Bridgewater.
By providing exceptional transparency and reporting on portfolios, Bridgewater's market outlook and performance, risk management analysis, and advisory research, Client Service helps clients solve their most pressing investment problems and plan their investment strategies. The group frequently meets with clients to discuss portfolio performance, give updates on recent research, provide guidance and training on Bridgewater's pioneering work in such areas as risk budgeting, alpha and beta separation, portable alpha, optimal beta, currency overlay, and global inflation-indexed bond investing; and assist in developing strategies that best meet client needs.

2027 Investment Associate Intern - Resume Drop
Bridgewater Associates LP 4.9
New York, NY job
Please note, applications are not yet open for this program. If you're interested, please submit your information along with a resume.
Bridgewater is one of the largest, most successful hedge funds of all-time, founded in 1975. We've built a unique understanding of global economies and financial markets used to generate high and uncorrelated returns (alpha) in systematic investment strategies.
We are looking to hire great talent for our Investment Associate roles. Does this sound like you?
Our Investment Associates (IAs) are the core team focused on developing and delivering alpha - the unique insights that enable us to beat markets and generate high and uncorrelated returns. Our approach is rooted in a fundamental understanding of the drivers of economies and markets and the systemization of those ideas. Our Investment Associates are:
Relentlessly, obsessively-curious. To beat markets, you must have unique insight-but markets are always learning. We need individuals fiercely driven to understand how the world works, uncovering new logical relationships, testing and exploring new data sources, and consistently trying to expand their understanding and constantly improve.
Deeply independent-bordering on iconoclastic-thinkers. For decades, Bridgewater has been studying markets and economies and reflecting our best understanding in our investment systems. We need independent-minded individuals who will come in and tell us why what we're doing and thinking is wrong-and be right about it.
Conceptual and analytical. We need people who are both excited by the challenge of taking abstract concepts and translating them into quantifiable measures in a systematic investment process.
Able to draw insights from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our investment approach draws from multiple disciplines-most obviously economics and finance-but also computer science, mathematics, statistics, political science, history, natural science, and more. To that end, our Investment Associates also come from a wide variety of backgrounds.
Collaborative and tenacious. Our culture of idea meritocracy requires constant, intensive collaboration and exploration of ideas. Grit is essential-many of the problems we try to solve don't have immediate or clear answers, and wrestling through to the truth alongside others takes enormous perseverance.
What can I expect in an Investment Associate summer internship?
Our goal is to provide interns with real and meaningful exposure to a fundamental and systematic investment process. As Investment Associates, we live and breathe markets and want our interns to have the chance to do the same. We hate the concept of “busy work” and try to make the internship as real of a window as possible. From the first week on, you'll be expected to form your own macroeconomic and market views-including the opportunity to bet with your intern compensation and enter “positions” in actual markets Bridgewater trades, where Bridgewater will take the other side, using our in-house Investor Track Record tool. The internship is structured around the same components as Bridgewater's research and investment process-you'll start by looking out at the world and perceiving the most important dynamics for investors related to a specific economy and market. You'll then synthesize your key views. Finally, you'll get exposure to systemization-taking your point in time views and working with our investors to translate the core logic into data and mathematical expressions that you can then stress-test through time.
Throughout the internship, you'll also receive world class markets and macroeconomic training via an abridged version of our first year Investment Associate class. This will cover the foundational frameworks, introduction to analytical methods we use in our research and some light exposure to our technology stack. Our training ecosystem is designed so that anyone willing to put in the work can get the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the internship and get a taste of what it's like to be a real macro investor.
Compensation
Total compensation for this position is $51,000 for the 8-week internship (less applicable deductions and withholdings), including a sign on bonus. In addition, our compensation package includes housing.
This is not a contract and confers no contractual rights, privileges, or benefits on any applicant or potential applicant. Bridgewater has the right to change any and all terms of this , including, but not limited to, job responsibilities, qualifications and benefits. Nothing in this job description constitutes an offer or guarantee of employment.
The Investment Associate Intern position requires the candidate is eligible to work in the United States for a minimum of 3 years from the candidate's start date. H-1B visa sponsorship and support for post-graduation optional practical training is available only to candidates with a degree in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

About the Role
Investment Engineers (IEs) are integral to our investment process. You will design, build, and continuously evolve the models and systems that:
Transform macroeconomic and market understanding into systematic signals and portfolio construction decisions
Enable rigorous research, testing, and implementation of trading ideas
Power high-quality, scalable data pipelines and diagnostics that support investment decisions and operations
Run and monitor live investment systems that trade global markets
IEs are both investors and system designers:
You will develop deep domain expertise, hold the full mental model of the investment system you own, and scrutinize its behavior and performance
You will design elegant, evolvable systems that keep pace with changing market conditions and new insights
You will collaborate intensively in a culture that values truth-seeking, analytical rigor, and perseverance
What You'll Do
Own and evolve investment systems end-to-end, taking on meaningful subsystem ownership early and scaling to larger systems over time.
Translate investment theses into testable hypotheses, systematic signals, and portfolio/trading logic
Explore and integrate new datasets; build robust data pipelines and features for research and production
Develop visualizations and diagnostics to monitor fundamentals, market action, and system health
Conduct research on highly dimensional time-series and cross-sectional datasets
Partner with senior investors and engineers to shape research agendas, system architecture, and the technology roadmap
Who You Are
We hire a range of talent across experience levels and teams. Strong candidates generally bring:
Passion and knack for building data models and algorithmic systems that solve complex investment problems
Strong analytical and statistical modeling skills; comfort with large-scale, high-dimensional time-series and cross-sectional data
Proficiency in scripting/functional programming (R or Python; Scala is a plus)
Deep interest in markets, finance, and investing; intellectual curiosity and skepticism grounded in evidence
Ability to design and build large-scale, evolvable systems; strong attention to detail and craftsmanship
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; thrive in intensive, collaborative problem-solving
Specifically for our Asia Solutions Team, we are also interested in candidates with an interest in or prior experience with Asia-Pacific markets.
Development and Career Path
Early ownership: Expect to own subsystems within months and scale to larger systems over your first 2-4 years.
Training: Most new full-time hires participate in foundational investor and systemization training. The structure and duration vary by team and experience level; early-career hires typically receive more formalized ramp-up.
Mentorship: You will be mentored by experienced Engineers and work directly with investment leaders who own the P&L of their systems.
Physical Requirements and Location
The anticipated onsite requirement for this role is four days per week, primarily at our New York City campus. A subset of teams, including our Asia Solutions team, operates on a hybrid schedule alternating between our New York City and Westport campuses.
Compensation Band
The total compensation range across these roles is $225,000-$450,000 inclusive of base salary and discretionary target bonus. The expected base salary is typically 50%-75% of the relevant range, depending on team, level, and experience.
