Viking River company history timeline

1997

Founded in 1997 with just four ships, Viking Cruises has grown to a fleet of 82 vessels used on ocean and river cruises around the world.

2000

In 2000, the company purchased Europe’s KD River Cruises in order to grow its fleet, to leverage 40 years of river cruising experience and to acquire rights to prime docking locations in key European cities.

The company expanded into the American market in 2000, establishing a sales and marketing office in Los Angeles, California.

2003

The shipping industry billionaire has held top spot every year since 2003.

2004

2004 saw expansion into China with Yangtze river cruises and cruise tours which took in such key Far East cities as Shanghai and Beijing, closely followed by Southeast Asia and a range of Mekong itineraries.

2006

Norway-born, Fredriksen took Cypriot citizenship in 2006.

2013

*Since January 1, 2013, the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) was made mandatory for new ships, requiring a minimum energy efficiency level per capacity mile.

2015

In 2015, Viking introduced its first ocean ship with the naming of the 930-guest all-veranda Viking Star.

2019

The Kapital report shows that total assets of the 400 richest now total $146.2 billion compared with $147 billion in 2019.

2020

His wealth of $10.8 billion is more than twice that of anyone else in Norway, yet he placed just 141st on the Forbes Billionaires 2020 list.

2022

In January 2022, Viking launched new expedition voyages with the arrival of its first vessel, the 378-guest Polar Class Viking Octantis, which is spending its maiden season in Antarctica and North America’s Great Lakes.

Viking marks its 25th anniversary in 2022; by the end of the year, Viking will have welcomed a second identical expedition ship, as well as two new identical ocean ships, new Viking Longships® in Europe and new purpose-built vessels for the Nile, Mekong and Mississippi rivers.

A second, identical sister ship, Viking Polaris, joins the fleet in Summer 2022 for journeys to the Arctic and Antarctica.
