Village Baptist Church company history timeline

1976

1976 – Missions Commission helped start FISH;

1977

On July 24, 1977, the Founding Pastor, Reverend Robin Guess, resigned and a nine-member Pastor Search Committee was elected.

1978

On April 2, 1978, Reverend O. Damon Shook became the church's second Pastor.

1978 – Building Committee established, led by Gracen Joiner;

1980

1980 – last worship service in church house, January 6;

1981

On September 26, 1981, at a meeting in the Community Center at Thomas Village, William H. Jenkins, then Director of the Division of Ministries, represented the Baptist General Board regarding building a Missionary Baptist Church in Thomas Village.

1981 – first WIA retreat held at Angela Sweetin’s;

1982

Worship services had already begun on January 2, 1982, at Rayburn Lodge Hall in Duffield, VA, under the direction of the Area Missionary.

Reverend Fletcher accepted the call and began his pastorate on October 3, 1982.

1982 – parent support group led by Rose Schrott;

1983

1983 – “Peace with Justice” seminar led by Doctor Foy Valentine;

1984

1984 – “Parenting by Grace” seminar led by Rev.

The construction projects approved in 1984 were started.

1985

On January 1, 1985, Pastor Bruce Salmon was called to serve as Village’s fourth pastor.

1987

1987 – groundbreaking service for west wing held in May;

A report from the Future Planning Committee was adopted that provided education space for Sunday School attendance of 3,100 by December 1987 as well as future space for 5,000 in Sunday School and 6,000 in worship.

1989

Construction on the parking garage started in the fall for expected completion in early 1989.

1990

1990- “Raise the Roof” project for church in Burkina Faso;

1992

On March 31, 1992, the Church elected Ralph Crawford of Kingsport, TN, to serve as interim pastor.

In conjunction with the Church’s Homecoming Service and in celebration of its tenth anniversary, a groundbreaking service was held at the property on September 27, 1992.

By early 1992, church membership had grown to 241.

1992 – new bulletin design with color photo of picture window;

1994

Doctor Richard Norton purchased the Church’s old facility on Quillen Drive on July 9, 1994.

1994 – Winter Bible Study on the life of Christ led by Bruce Salmon;

1995

1995 – Men’s Bible Study group begun by Pete Parreco;

1996

1996 – first Sunday in January “snowed out’ by blizzard;

Johnny Kendrick spoke at the first worship service in the Church’s new facility on August 18, 1996.

Echoing Psalm 127:1, the scripture that was read at the dedication on the Church’s first building, the new Church facility was dedicated to the Lord’s work on November 10, 1996.

1997

First revival in the new facility began Sunday, March 16, 1997, and 20 souls were saved.

Reverend Ralph Crawford was called to pastor the Church on August 10, 1997.

1997 – Winter Bible Study on Book of Revelation led by Bruce Salmon;

1998

1998 – Brass altar cross purchased from Memorial Fund;

1999

In November 1999, all of the property on Champion Forest Drive was sold.

2001

The Church approved the charter of an AWANA ministry on September 11, 2001.

2001 – Groundbreaking for new building on 1st anniversary of the fire;

2002

2002 – Piano Keys fund drive to purchase baby grand piano;

2003

AWANA commenced in January 2003 with AWANA clubs for children three years of age through sixth grade.

At a special called business meeting on May 18, 2003, the Church voted to call Garry Edwards as pastor.

Edwards accepted the call and began serving the Church on June 8, 2003.

2003 – Winter Bible Study on 1 & 2 Samuel led by Bruce Salmon;

2004

Additionally, our expansion project in 2004 enabled us to add a steeple and an elevator, upgrade our sound and security systems, and construct a multi-story building adjacent to house administrative offices, a conference room and several classrooms.

The first year (2004), there were 150 women from several churches in the region in attendance.

2004 – Winter bible Study on Romans led by Bruce Salmon;

2005

In January, Damon Shook announced his retirement effective May 1, 2005.

On February 13, 2005, a nine-member Pastor Search Committee was elected by the church's membership.

2005 – 20th anniversary Celebration for Bruce and Linda Salmon;

2007

January 7th 2007, Dr, Fleming preaches for the first time as senior pastor of Champion Forest Baptist Church.

2010

On October 3, 2010, a pastor search committee was formed.

The dedication of new children’s Sunday School and first WoRM rotation was November 28, 2010.

2011

CFBC's Main Worship Center undergoes a remodel in June, 2011.

2013

The pastor search committee presented Buddy Osborne of Kingsport, TN, as their candidate for pastor on February 24, 2013, and he was called to pastor the Church, effective April 8, 2013.

As of this writing (July 2013), after three years of WoRM, Sunday School attendance consistently averages 85% of worship attendance.

The conference’s tenth anniversary will be celebrated on September 21, 2013.

2019

After 13 years of faithful ministry and mission, Doctor David Fleming stepped down as Senior Pastor of CFBC on September 8, 2019.

2020

On January 6, 2020, Pastor Emily Holladay took up the role of senior pastor becoming our fifth pastor.

The year 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of the Village Baptist Church in Kennebunkport.
