Village of Baldwinsville history

Captivated by the area's natural beauty, the Baldwins returned in 1808 and commenced development of the community which would take their name.

By the end of 1809, Doctor Baldwin had put the essential infrastructure into place.

B'villians have answered every national call to arms since the War of 1812.

When this was done he was granted permission to construct a toll bridge and it became the only area West of Rome, NY that could offer the waterway as a means of travel and distribution many years before the Erie Canal was built in 1825.

Connected to the railway network in 1848, Baldwinsville's interests extended far beyond town boundaries.

But during the 1940's and three month’s after the Unites States entered World War II, 250 families living between the Oswego and Seneca Rivers were ordered by the Army Corps of Engineers to evacuate their homes.

In the fall of 1946, the Baldwinsville Travelers Club formed a library committee to investigate establishing a library in the village.

The library opened its doors for the first time on January 6, 1948, in two rooms of the old trolley station that served as the Lysander Town Building.

Later, in 1952, the trustees of the William Waldorf Astor estate bought 2,000 acres for residential and commercial development.

The architectural sculpture that identifies Radisson’s main entrance to the Corporate Park at Route 31 and Willett Parkway was conceived in 1974 by Sergi Yevich of Baldwinsville who was an architect and planner for the Radisson development.

One year to the day, on October 29, 1995, over 2,500 people participated in the Grand Opening of the new library.
