Village of Huntley history

In 1856 he built a beautiful home on Woodstock Street which still stands today.

Maps as early as 1872 show the area as open space.

In October 1878, at the age of 71, Huntley became father to his youngest son, Thomas Stillwell Huntley Jr., who was the only one of Huntley’s children to survive him.

When Thomas Huntley died on May 21, 1894, at the age of 87, he was mourned not only as the towns founder, but also as a much loved and well-respected citizen.

In 1897 telephone service first was made available to the town.

In the late 1920’s the Huntley Boy Scouts constructed a log cabin in Donahoe’s Woods.

In 1945 the first Girl Scout Troop was organized in Huntley, with nine girls registered.

The Chicago and Galena Railroad became the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, and later, Union Pacific Railroad, and served the community for over 150 years, though passenger service was eliminated in about 1950.

The Huntley Park District was founded in April of 1965.

Almost no growth occurred during the Depression years, but the village began to grow slowly and steadily after WWII. In 1993, Prime Development proposed a planned community of 2,700 acres south of the village near the Northwest Tollway.

Deicke served as one of the first Board members and remained an honoree Commissioner until his death in 1994.

Deicke passed away on December 31, 1999.

In 2002 the park district’s Stingray Bay Family Aquatic Center opened featuring a zero depth simulated beach entry, 2 water slides, 2 tot slides, rain drop water feature, 3 floatable animal features , a large sand play area, and Ray’s Café concessions.
