Nearby are the Cape Henry Lights, the old (1791–92) and new (1879–81) lighthouses, situated northeast of the site of Fort Story.
A second lighthouse was built in 1881 because of concerns over the original lighthouse’s stability.
Founded in 1887, Virginia Beach developed as a resort following construction of a hotel and a railroad linking it with Norfolk.
During a violent spring storm that hit Virginia Beach on April 7, 1889, more than forty ships were wrecked between Cape Henry and Cape Hatteras.
The ship had been on the beach for some fifteen months when Captain Charlton got married in July of 1890, and he and his new bride spent their honeymoon aboard the stranded ship.
