Virginia Country Club company history timeline
The Virginia Country Club of Long Beach incorporated in 1909, and like many California golf clubs, was started by land and hotel owners working together to bring people to their cities and resorts.
The club’s name was changed to Washington Country Club and was retained until 1915 when the club was incorporated in Virginia and became the Washington Golf and Country Club.

Originally designed by Herbert Barker, renowned golf course architect Donald Ross redesigned the layout in 1920.
At Rancho Los Cerritos in Long Beach, on September 1, 1921, a day after the new Hunt & Burns clubhouse was dedicated, the new William Watson designed grass-green golf course of the Virginia Country Club opened to its members.
The new layout was opened for play in 1922.
The James River Course first opened on June 30, 1928 as the combination of two nines from separate golf courses designed by noted golf architect William Flynn.
Canadian gets First Ace at Augusta National in 1934
Another new clubhouse was built in 1958 and about that time the course architect firm Findlay & Loving made some major changes to certain golf holes.
The Tuckahoe Creek Course was designed by Joseph Lee and opened on April 15, 1988.
The current clubhouse was built in 2006 and has served the membership ever since.
