Founded in 1976, Virginia Eye Institute is one of Virginia’s oldest, largest, and best-known ophthalmology practices.
In 1981, Virginia Eye Institute made medical history when Anthony D. Sakowski, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S. and Walter E. Bundy, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. performed Virginia’s first refractive surgery procedure.
In 1983, Virginia Eye Institute revolutionized ophthalmology in Virginia yet again when it began development of a free-standing outpatient ophthalmic ambulatory surgery center, the first of its kind in the state.
The first surgery case was performed on January 26, 2003.
In 2003, Virginia Eye Institute’s new free-standing Ambulatory Surgery Center opened at the Huguenot Bridge campus.
